Water Supply Disrupted in Fukushima, East Coast of Japan After Earthquake

Water supply was disrupted in areas of Japan?s east coast after the country was hit by an 8.9- magnitude earthquake, its strongest on record.
The Japan Water Works Association is gathering information from prefectures across the country on water supply condition and may release the results through the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare within two days, said Takumi Kato, a spokesman at the Tokyo-based association. The number of households affected has yet to be confirmed, he said.
Some residents on northeastern coastal areas of Japan?s main island were evacuated after the coast was hit by a tsunami that engulfed houses, roads and cars. The supply of water is critical in the aftermath of a disaster because of risk of epidemics as displaced people gather in shelters, the World Health Organization said on its website.

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 jolted northeastern and eastern Japan on Friday, which is believed to be one of the largest ever observed in the country.​
The quake and the tsunami it triggered have caused heavy casualties and inflicted severe losses on the country. The figures are expected to increase, considering the large scale of the disaster.
HEAVY CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE
The latest report of Kyodo said the death toll is expected to exceed 1,000 as about 1,800 houses in Fukushima Prefecture were found to have been devastated.
Police in Miyagi prefecture, where the quake stroke, found 200 to 300 bodies in Wakabayashi Ward in the city of Sendai after a 10- meter tsunami washed the port.
Also in Sendai, the authorities evacuated 60,000-70,000 people to around 200 shelters, Kyodo News reported, adding that the local authorities have confirmed 133 deaths and 531 people missing in eight prefectures along the Pacific coast.
In the tsunami-hit area, a train was missing, with unknown number of passengers aboard, and a ship, carrying 100 people, was swept away by the tsunami, according to a Kyodo report.
Nearly 3,000 residents living within a 3-km-radius of a nuclear power plant in Fukushima were told to evacuate following the powerful earthquake.
The radiation level has been detected to be rising at the plant and the air pressure level has also soared inside the container of a reactor, the plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. was quoted by Kyodo as saying Friday night.
Up to 13,000 people were stranded at Narita airport in Chiba Prefecture and 10,000 at Haneda airport in Tokyo as a total of 711 domestic flights and a number of international flights were canceled following the massive quake.
An explosion was also observed at the Cosmo Oil refinery in Chiba Prefecture following the massive quake. Fires were reported at 48 locations, including at an ironworks in Chiba Prefecture.
In Tokyo and surrounding areas, up to 4 million homes suffered from a power cut. All trains in Tohoku, Tokyo areas have been suspended Friday. And Tokyo metropolitan expressways as well as Tokyo subways and suburban rail services were also closed following the quake.
The quake has affected the nation's key transportation systems, including Narita airport, which were closed for safety checks on its runways.

Japan begins quake relief mission

A mammoth relief mission is swinging into action in north-east Japan, a day after it was struck by a devastating tsunami, claiming hundreds of lives.
The disaster was triggered by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake, the country's most powerful since records began.

The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the situation in Japan in the aftermath of a powerful earthquake, measuring 8.9 magnitude, that struck northern Japan on March 11. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Japan at this time. This Travel Alert expires on April 1, 2011.
The Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens to avoid tourism and non-essential travel to Japan at this time. Tokyo airports are currently closed; other airports in Japan may be closed or have restricted access. Public transportation, including trains and subways are closed in the Tokyo area, and service has been interrupted in other areas. Many roads have been damaged in the Tokyo area and in northern Japan.
Strong aftershocks are likely for weeks following a strong earthquake such as this one. The American Red Cross recommends that in the event of aftershocks, persons should move to open spaces away from walls, windows, buildings, and other structures that may collapse, and should be alert to the danger of falling debris. If you are indoors, DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON: If possible, seek cover under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there is no table or desk nearby, sit on the floor against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases or tall furniture that could fall on you. Avoid damaged buildings and downed power lines. Great care should be used with matches, lighters, candles, or any open flame due to the possibility of disrupted gas lines.
U.S. citizens currently in Japan should contact family and friends in the United States to confirm their well-being at the earliest opportunity. Where internet and telephone services are not available, it may be possible to contact people using SMS (Cell text message) or other forms of social media such as Twitter and Facebook. U.S. citizens may contact the Department of State at JapanEmergencyUSC@state.gov and the emergency contact numbers below.
U.S. citizens in Japan are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at the following website: https://travelregistration.state.gov. U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly at the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulates. By enrolling, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy/Consulates to contact them in case of emergency.

Cold Endangers Japanese Earthquake, Tsunami Survivors

Rescue crews combing the wreckage left in the wake of Friday's earthquake and tsunami in Japan will welcome dry weather this weekend, but cold temperatures will endanger those without shelter or power.
The dry weather will prevail throughout northern and central Japan this weekend with an area of high pressure overhead, aiding rescue and cleanup operations.
Those left without shelter or power, however, will be faced with chilly conditions into Saturday.


Temperatures in Sendai, one of the larger cities located closest to the earthquake's epicenter, will dip into the upper 20s (F) Friday night (local time) . Highs on Saturday will only recover to around 40 degrees.
The weekend will end on a milder note with afternoon highs on Sunday rising to near 50 degrees.
