Japan issues tsunami warning after 7.2 earthquake

TOKYO: Japan issued a tsunami warning Wednesday after a major 7.2-magnitude quake struck 160 kilometres east off the main Honshu island at 0245 GMT, swaying buildings in the capital Tokyo.

A tsunami warning of up to 50 cm was issued for northeastern Japan, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Tohoku Electric Power said its Onagawa nuclear plant was operating normally after the quake. Tokyo Electric Power also said there was no impact on its power plants in the region.

Magnitude 7.3 quake hits Sanriku region

....At 12:16 PM, a 60-centimeter tsunami was observed at Ofunato port in Iwate.

The agency is advising people to stay away from the coast and river mouths.
Police say there are as yet no reports of damage.

Powerful quake hits Sanriku, causes tsunami

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit Japan's northern Pacific coast on late Wednesday morning.

The Meteorological Agency says some parts of Miyagi Prefecture were jolted by tremors with the intensity of 5 minus on the Japanese scale of zero to 7 at around 11:45 AM local time....
