Vibrant: I haven't seen any listed. I'd expect they're waiting to see how big they are in hawaii and Alaska. I'd imagine all the emergency personnel are gearing up.

My sister is in Hawaii right now! Hawaii has SIRENS!

These waves have the potential to stay very large for long distances.

UPDATE 1-Hawaii orders evacuations in Pacific tsunami threat

* Hawaii and Guam residents told to leave coastal areas

* Tsunami could wash over some Pacific islands - Red Cross (Adds Guam details, Red Cross warning)

By Suzanne Roig and Jorene Barut

HONOLULU, March 10 (Reuters) - Hawaii ordered evacuations from coastal areas due to the threat of a tidal wave set off by Friday's earthquake in Japan as a tsunami warning was extended to the whole of the Pacific basin, except mainland United States and Canada.

Authorities also ordered evacuation from low-lying areas on the U.S. island territory of Guam in the western Pacific, where residents there were urged to move at least 50 feet (15 meters) above sea level and 100 feet (30 meters) inland.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the warning extended from Mexico down the Pacific coast of South America.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies warned that the tsunami is currently higher than some Pacific islands which it could wash over.

The quake off Japan's northeast coast was the biggest in 140 years and triggered tsunami waves of up to 10 meters (30 feet) that swept across farmland, sweeping away homes, crops, vehicles and triggering fires. [ID:nL3E7EB0MF]

The tsunami warning issued late on Thursday for Hawaii prompted civil defense officials to order all Hawaiian coastal areas evacuated. The warning said that all islands in the Hawaiian chain were in the path of potential damage from a tsunami generated by the quake.

The government advisory put the estimated arrival time in Hawaii of a first tsunami wave 3 a.m. local time, the advisory said.

Civil defense sirens blared statewide shortly before 10 p.m. local time to alert residents.

"Each individual wave crest can last five to 15 minutes or more and extensively flood coastal areas," the advisory statement warned. "The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive."

The statement also said that debris carried by a tsunami could amplify its destructive force, said it warned that "urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

The state civil defense agency ordered all coastal areas for the entire state evacuated no later than 2 a.m. local time. The evacuation zone includes the famous Waikiki Beach, the main hotel and tourist hub in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, and traffic in the area soon grew heavy.

Lines of cars began to form at gasoline service stations on Oahu as motorists gassed up their vehicles.

In the town of Kailua, police with bullhorns were urging people to higher ground.

Ocean waves up to 6 feet (2 meters) above normal sea level were detected by deep-ocean gauges near Wake island, Midway and Guam in the North Pacific, said Chip McCreary, a spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The island of Kauai is expected to be first hit because the tsunami was advancing from the west and would likely take 20 to 30 minutes to cross the entire state, McCreary said. (Writing by Steve Gorman; editing by Anthony Boadle)

I was hoping that ocean ridge to the east of the Phillipine trench might deflect the wave away from Indonesian, PNG, Malaysia. However, it may not have much effect on NZ. Look at the google earth map from directly over marshall Islands - see the trench going SE of Japan and the ridge to the west? Hopefully that will help.

The Midway Islands are to the west of Hawaii, so depending on what happens there, it should give Hawaii a better idea of what's coming.

I wonder how much warning the people of Japan had. Did they KNOW the tsunami was coming?

The news reporter in Indo said in some parts they were being warned; but in other parts, the only way people were knowing to evacuate was by what they were hearing from other areas.

She said they were not expecting the high wave like what hit Japan.

TIME - TIME OF MEASUREMENT AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDES ARE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL. IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT. VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).

TSUNAMI AMPLITUDES ARE EXPECTED TO PEAK TWO TO THREE HOURS AFTER INITIAL ARRIVAL ALONG THE NORTH AMERICAN COAST. (???)

TSUNAMIS CAN BE DANGEROUS WAVES THAT ARE NOT SURVIVABLE. WAVE HEIGHTS ARE AMPLIFIED BY IRREGULAR SHORELINE AND ARE DIFFICULT TO FORECAST. TSUNAMIS OFTEN APPEAR AS A STRONG SURGE AND MAY BE PRECEDED BY A RECEDING WATER LEVEL. MARINERS IN WATER DEEPER THAN 600 FEET SHOULD NOT BE AFFECTED BY A TSUNAMI. WAVE HEIGHTS WILL INCREASE RAPIDLY AS WATER SHALLOWS. TSUNAMIS ARE A SERIES OF OCEAN WAVES WHICH CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE ARRIVAL. DO NOT RETURN TO EVACUATED AREAS UNTIL AN ALL CLEAR IS GIVEN BY LOCAL CIVIL AUTHORITIES.

PACIFIC COASTAL REGIONS OUTSIDE CALIFORNIA/ OREGON/ WASHINGTON/ BRITISH COLUMBIA AND ALASKA SHOULD REFER TO THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER MESSAGES FOR INFORMATION ON THIS EVENT AT WWW.WEATHER.GOV/PTWC.

Earthquake Hits Japan Causing Tsunami, ?Major? Damage

March 11 (Bloomberg) -- Japan was struck by its strongest earthquake in at least a century, an 8.9-magnitude temblor that shook buildings across Tokyo and unleashed a tsunami as high as 10 meters, engulfing towns along the northern coast.

At least 18 people were killed by the 33-foot wave and many are missing, according to state broadcaster NHK Television, which showed footage of waves sweeping away buildings and vehicles as far as 1.5 kilometers inland. Airports were closed and bullet train services suspended. More than 4 million homes are without power, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

?Major damage occurred in the Tohoku area? north of Tokyo, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said in a nationally televised address after convening an emergency response team. ?I call on citizens to act calmly. Especially those who are near a beach, please evacuate to higher ground to avoid the tsunami.?

The world?s strongest earthquake in more than six years....

A tide guage at Shemya, Alaska, monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed rising water, with erratic surface activity just after 12:30am Friday and was still increasing at 2 am.

According to a press release from the Kenai Peninsula Borough, tsunami sirens sounded in Seward, Homer, and Seldovia, even though there was no warning issued. A tsunami advisory only is in effect.

The Borough said people are not required or recommended to evacuate low-lying areas, though they should stay out of harbors and off beaches as there could be rapid currents.

Some nuclear power plants and oil refineries were shut down and a refinery and a major steel plant was ablaze.

Cabinet ministers were meeting about nuclear issues after media reports said the government would declare a nuclear power emergency, which occurs if there is confirmation of radioactivity leaks or a reactor cooling system breakdown.

Around 4.4 million homes were without power in northern Japan, media said. A hotel collapsed in the city of Sendai and people were feared buried in the rubble.

Electronics giant Sony Corp, one of the country's biggest exporters, shut six factories, Kyodo reported, as air force jets raced toward the northeast coast to determine the extent of the damage.

The Bank of Japan, which has been struggling to boost the anemic economy, said it would do its utmost to ensure financial market stability as the yen and Japanese shares fell.

They are now reporting one of the reactors did not shut down properly and there is not enough electricity to operate the cooling system. Residents are being told to stay calm; no radiation leak.

Iwate has been hit by a strong aftershock and about 300 homes have been washed away.

The following list gives estimated times of arrival for
locations along the North American Pacific coast from a
tsunami generated at the given source location. The
list is ordered by arrival time starting with the earliest.
Since tsunami speed is directly related to
water depth, tsunami ETAs can be computed independent of
tsunami amplitude. THE LISTING OF A TSUNAMI ARRIVAL TIME
BELOW DOES NOT INDICATE A WAVE IS IMMINENT. The listed arrival
time is the initial wave arrival. Tsunamis can be dangerous
for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not
necessarily the largest.

Disaster hardened country terrified

Even in a nation accustomed to tremors, yesterday's massive earthquake in Japan, and the tsunami it triggered, were terrifyingly different.

Coming only 17 days after the devastating quake in Christchurch, people in Japan were petrified.

(snipped)

The quake surpasses the Great Kanto quake of September 1, 1923, which had a magnitude of 7.9 and killed more than 140,000 people in the Tokyo area. Seismologists had said another such quake could strike the city at any time.

A 1995 quake in Kobe caused US$100 billion ($136 billion) in damage, the most expensive natural disaster in history. For Takeshi Okada, yesterday's quake was a chilling reminder of that disaster.

"I remember seeing what happened in Kobe and thought, what if that happens to Tokyo? I'm panicking. I don't want to go outside in case something crashes down on me."

UPDATE 1-Heightened state of alert at Japan atom plant--IAEA

(Reuters) - Japan has told the U.N. nuclear wathchdog that a heightened state of alert has been declared at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after Friday's major earthquake, the Vienna-based agency said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it had also been informed that the plant had been shut down and that no release of radiation had been detected.

Japanese media reported separately that a leak was possible at the plant north of Tokyo as water levels fall, and that some 2,000 residents had been told to evacuate the area.

The government earlier said a cooling function at Tokyo Electric Power's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was not working, but there was no radioactive leakage.

The IAEA said in a statement that nuclear fuel requires continued cooling even after a plant is shut down.

"The IAEA is seeking further details on the situation at Fukushima Daiichi and other nuclear power plants and research reactors, including information on off-site and on-site electrical power supplies, cooling systems and the condition of the reactor buildings," it said.

Japanese authorities also reported a fire at the Onagawa nuclear power plant, which has since been extinguished, the IAEA statement said......
