Excerpt from Japan earthquake and tsunami WHO Situation Report No. 05

14 March 2011
As of 14:30 hrs Manila Time

All times stated below are in Tokyo time
SITUATION SUMMARY

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake (updated from the 8.8 magnitude, by Japan Meteorological
Agency on 13 March)
occurred on 11 Mar 2011 in Japan at 05.46.23 GMT, hitting the
northeast coast of Honshu, Japan. The worst affected area is the east coast of Tohoku
region.

 Based on official Japanese government figures (10:00 hrs, 14 March), 1 627 people are
confirmed dead, 1 962 injured with at least 1 720 missing. Figures are expected to rise.

Various media sources report more than 10,000 estimated deaths.

 Rescue operations are ongoing and 371 833 persons have been evacuated.

 There has been some improvement in the provision of electricity and water services. 1.5
million households remain without electric power
(2.7 m without power 13 March) and
at least 1.4 million households are without running water (13 prefectures without water
compared to 17 prefectures 13 March
).

Ten nuclear reactor units automatically shut down after the earthquake in three
separate nuclear power plants, Onagawa, Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini.
The
automatic shut down went as planned for the Onagawa plant.
o The problems with the cooling systems in both Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima
Daini continue. Temporary measures for the cooling systems are in place. The
state of emergency declared still remains.

o Venting operations to release pressure of the tanks at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1
and 3 are no longer ongoing.

o An explosion was reported at Daiichi (Reactor No. 1) on 12 March, but it was not
related to nuclear reaction. A second explosion was reported at Daiichi (Reactor
No. 3) on 1100 hrs 14 Mar, but also not related to nuclear reaction. Both
explosions are believed to be due to hydrogen reaction. The reactor containers
for both units were not damaged during the explosion. Four persons were
injured in reactor No. 1's explosion and 10 were injured in reactor No. 3's
explosion. High levels of radiation were not detected in the 4 persons injured
during Reactor No. 1 explosion.

2
o Radioactivity has been detected outside the units in Fukushima Daiichi.
Increased levels were reported 0200 hrs 14 Mar 2011, however these levels have
since declined.

o The evacuation zone is 20km for Fukushima Daiichi plant and 10km for Daini
plants.
The majority of the 270 000 persons in the evacuation zones have already
been evacuated.

o A hospital in Fukushima has been designated for responding to persons
potentially exposed to radiation.

Nuclear Experts Explain Worst-Case Scenario at Fukushima Power Plant

The type of accident occurring now in Japan derives from a loss of off-site AC power and then a subsequent failure of emergency power on-site. Engineers there are racing to restore AC power to prevent a core meltdown
By Steve Mirsky | March 12, 2011

...
And just what is that worst-case scenario? "They're venting in order to keep the containment vessel from failing. But if a core melts, it will slump to the bottom of the reactor vessel, probably melt through the reactor vessel onto the containment floor. It's likely to spread as a molten pool—like lava—to the edge of the steel shell and melt through. That would result in a containment failure in a matter of less than a day. It's good that it's got a better containment system than Chernobyl, but it's not as strong as most of the reactors in this country."

How to Cool a Nuclear Reactor

Japan's devastating earthquake caused cooling problems at one of the nation's nuclear reactors, and authorities scrambled to prevent a meltdown
...

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan is causing problems for at least one of its fleet of nuclear reactors—and authorities have shut down 10 of the country's 55 units. Tokyo Electric Power confirmed that pressure had been rising inside reactor No. 1 at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on the northeast coast, one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world. That means cooling water is not getting to the reactor core, causing a build up of steam inside the containment vessel. The problem, according to Japanese media reports, is a loss of grid electricity to run the pumps that bring in cooling water. The backup diesel generators that are supposed to provide emergency power in that case are out of order, according to the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, but replacements were being taken to the plant. (Similar diesel generators were providing power to the nation's Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant, which recycles spent nuclear fuel.)

As a precautionary measure, the Japanese government has declared a nuclear emergency and asked people living within three kilometers of the facility to evacuate and people living within 10 kilometers to remain indoors. Tokyo Electric Power, for its part, planned to vent some of the radioactive steam from inside the containment building.
Scientific American spoke with Scott Burnell, public affairs officer at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the government agency charged with monitoring the safety of the 104 nuclear reactors in the U.S., about what it takes to cool down a reactor.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]
How do you typically cool a reactor?

Japan: Nearly 15,000 Dead Or Missing Following Earthquake

Written by: KUNA

The confirmed death toll from a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami on March 11 that hit northeastern and eastern Japan has jumped to 5,321 and 9,329 others people remained missing as of 2 p.m. (0500 GMT) on Thursday, the government announced.

Of the total, 2,896 deaths have been confirmed in the hardest-hit Miyagi Prefecture alone, while 1,824 people were killed in neighboring Iwate Prefecture, the National Police Agency said.

Seven people were also killed in Tokyo. The death toll is expected to further rise, as the current tally of missing people reflects only the number actually registered with the police.

As of Thursday afternoon, about 386,000 people sought refuge in 2,200 shelters.

14 elderly die after evacuating Japanese hospital

TOKYO - Fourteen elderly patients have died after being transferred out of a hospital in the radiation zone near Japan's troubled nuclear power plant.

A government official said two died in transit Monday and another 12 while staying at a temporary shelter at a high school gym. The remaining patients were moved to other hospitals by Thursday morning.

Fukushima official Chuei Inamura said: "We simply did not have means to provide good care."

The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan's northeast last week is taking a particularly heavy toll on the elderly. Many perished. Survivors face hospitals without electricity or water and shortages of everything from medicine to adult diapers.

Japan has one of the world's most rapidly aging populations.

Woes mount for Japan tsunami survivors

17 Mar 2011

resize_image

OTSUCHI, Japan, March 17 (Reuters) - Nearly a week after their home town was annihilated in a catastrophic tsunami, the 1,000-plus survivors of the small Japanese fishing town of Otsuchi are hanging by a thread.

With no water or electricity and scant food, survivors keep each other company at one of three emergency shelters on the outskirts of what remains of the town.

"You can't wash your hands or face," says 72-year-old Katsu Sawayama, seated in the middle of the high school gymnasium, the biggest of the shelters in a town where more than half the 17,000 residents are still missing.

Adding to their woes, a heavy snowstorm sent temperatures plunging to below zero and blanketed acres of tsunami debris in white.

While international attention has been focused on Japan's efforts to stop damage at a quake-hit nuclear power plant from spiralling out of control, a massive salvage and rescue operation has slowly been gathering steam.

Scores of villages, hamlets and towns lining Japan's northeast coast were flattened by tsunami waves that rolled in minutes after Friday's 9.0 magnitude earthquake.

While the official toll stands at less than 5,000, thousands more are listed as missing and the final tally is likely to soar.
