With the death of another person in dengue the death toll rose to three in the state. Rakesh Singh, a resident of Balurghat who was admitted to the SSKM Hospital with dengue around 15 days ago died at the hospital on Thursday.
Rakesh, a taxi driver by profession was brought to the city after the blood test confirmed that he was suffering from dengue.
This is the second death due to dengue in this season. The disease had claimed it's first victim this season in a 5 year old boy who died at the Dr BC Roy hospital last night.

Dengue cases resurface in Bengal, two die

Two persons including a five-year-old boy died of dengue in Kolkata on Thursday, taking the toll in West Bengal to three.
While the boy, a resident of Salt Lake, died at B C Roy Hospital, a 35-year-old man died at SSKM hospital in the city.

Dengue toll touches 30 in the Capital

Delhi is facing its worst dengue crisis in five years and with the death of 25-year-old girl Monika from Sagarpur near Delhi Cantonment, on Wednesday night, the toll this season has touched 30.
The city has reported nearly 4,000 positive dengue cases since the beginning of the year with the maximum coming in this month. The State Health Department has started sending a recorded phone message by Health Minister Satyendar Jain to people informing them about the fever clinics and free treatment for the disease.

Four die of suspected dengue at Khanna

Residents of Khanna are living in scare with four suspected dengue deaths being reported from different hospitals today. However, the Health Department officials have denied any dengue death in the area.
There have been around a dozen suspected dengue deaths in the past some days. Today, Sooraj Kumar(35), a resident of of Samadhi Road, Harminder Singh (43) of Malerkotla Road, Paramjit Kaur (45) from Guru Nanak Nagar and Manjit Kaur (58), a resident of Lalheri Road, died of suspected dengue in different hospitals.

Home guard, two more die of dengue

Hyderabad: Three people died of dengue in the city on Thursday. Home guard Raju Goud died in a private hospital in Uppal while eight-year-old Rani from Medak district died in Gandhi Hospital.
The third death was of G. Srinivas Reddy, a 42-year-old farmer from Pasra village of Govindaraopet mandal in Warangal. He died while being shifted to MGM hospital from a private hospital.

India is tackling a surge in dengue cases, which some experts say could be vastly underestimated because of the lack of a surveillance system. Sanjeet Bagcchi reports from Kolkata.
As of Sept 15, 2015, nearly 21 000 cases of dengue have been reported across India, according to the country's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The number is double that reported in the country this time last year; as of Aug 31, 2014, the number of cases was 10 097. However, in a statement on Sept 2, health secretary BP Sharma said that although more cases have been reported in 2015 than in 2014, as of Aug 31 this year, there have been fewer deaths.

However, research suggests that the number of cases might be a substantial underestimate. An October, 2014, study in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene by researchers at the Brandeis University, MA, USA, showed that the annual number of dengue fever cases in India could be 282-times higher than the number officially reported, and ?the disease inflicts an economic burden on the country of at least US$1?11 billion each year in medical and other expenses?.
Thekkekara Jacob John, virologist and former head of clinical virology at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, said, ?Real numbers can emerge only with public health surveillance?one of the cardinal functions of a public health department, which is absent in India?. Amit Sengupta, associate coordinator at the Delhi secretariat of the People's Health Movement, told The Lancet that there is no surveillance system in place in India for dengue and all estimates of people affected during any epidemic are, at best, educated guesses. According to Sengupta, ?80% or more of dengue patients have no symptoms or mild symptoms and are not likely to be tested?.
However, speaking to The Lancet, Arun Thapa, the WHO representative to India, said, ?We don't have any evidence as to whether there is any under-reporting in the number of cases. However, it is safe to say that inherent to any ?good? but passive disease surveillance system, there is the possibility of under-reporting.?
