CHENNAI: Tamil actor Vivek's son Prasanna Kumar, 13, died in a city hospital on Thursday of complications arising out of dengue and brain fever. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital for more than a month.

Officials of the Health Department are waiting for medical report from the Christian Medical College (CMC) to ascertain the cause of death of a nine-year-old girl, who was admitted with fever on Thursday.

With reports doing the rounds that Aarthi, a resident of Nari Murugappa Mudali Street in Gudiyatham, died due to dengue, officials said the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.

Aarthiwas admitted to the hospital on Thursday. CMC officials said her condition was bad when she was brought to the hospital and she was immediately taken to the Intensive Care Unit. However, she died on Thursday night.

May I draw your attention to the NVBDCP report in the post immediately above this one that gives the number of Dengue cases in Tamil Nadu as 2,965 with 6 fatalities. There is ample evidence that even these numbers are a vast undercount. Please consult with experts in disease surveillance who may be able to explain why the number of confirmed cases is likely just a fraction of the total number of people sickened and indeed killed by Dengue in the state this year. As a start, you could read this Economic and Disease Burden of Dengue Illness in India which suggests that Dengue cases in Tamil Nadu are under reported by a factor of 288:1. To truly deal with a disease outbreak, you must first understand it.

A suspected patient of dengue from Mohali died at the PGI yesterday. A number of victims of aedes aegypti mosquito in the city and neighbouring districts of Mohali and Panchkula has already crossed over 1,300.
Medical experts said the larvae of aedes aegypti mosquito, which causes dengue fever, were still found at many places though the number of such places had decreased.
Till date, while one confirmed dengue death has been reported from Chandigarh, four are suspected to have died of it. Similarly, a death each has been reported from Mohali and Panchkula districts.

365 Dengue Cases in First Week of November in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Over 360 cases of dengue have been reported in the first week of November, taking the total number of mosquito-borne fever cases in Delhi to over 15,200.

While October had seen 7,283 cases, maximum number of cases, among all the months this year, the vector-born disease is supposed to hit a plateau in November.

Standing at 15,254, dengue outbreak this year has become the worst outbreak since 1996. That year, 10,252 cases and 423 deaths were reported.

The civic administration has meanwhile updated its official death toll at 38, according to the report on the vector-borne disease released today by the SDMC, which compiles it on behalf of all civic bodies. Unofficially, however, the number of dengue victims stands at 43.
