Uncertainty looms over the proposed rehabilitation centre for the treatment of survivors of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH).
NBMCH sources said the PWD will look into the infrastructure development for the 10-bed centre for patients who suffer from paresis or partial loss of voluntary movement of limbs after recovering from the diseases.
Though the sources said the centre will be opened at the chest ward, and under the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, officials failed to say when exactly the centre would see the light of day.
?For the centre, the existing infrastructure needs to be expanded and this will be the basic job. The doors should be made bigger and there should be separate toilets for the patients. But the NBMCH authorities have so far failed to take the matter forward. They should speed up the work,? the sources said.

A two-year-long investigation into the ?mystery? disease termed Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) that kills tens of young children in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, every year has found no evidence of infectious microbes in the victims.

Instead, the investigators have said, their findings suggest ?toxin mediated illness?, with a hypothesis of a toxin in the prevalent litchi fruit in the area.
The joint report, by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta, and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Union Health Ministry, compares the outbreak to ackee fruit poisoning reported in the Carribean islands and West Africa.

Despite large scale planning and opening of 104 Encephalitis Treatment Centres across eastern UP, number of encephalitis cases and deaths have increased this year as compared to those reported in October last year.

A total of 1,558 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have been reported so far this year with 435 children succumbing to the disease. These include 84 Japanese Encephalitis cases and 20 deaths.

The fifth and the latest case of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Saraikella-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand has left the citizens and administration in shock. This is because a few days earlier, the state government had claimed a few days earlier that the spread of the disease has been contained.

District civil surgeon Kalanand Mishra on Monday confirmed that one-and-a-half-year old Rajbir Soren of Narwadih village has tested positive for the vector-borne disease. The infected child has been rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, for treatment. The first case of the disease, in the district, was detected on June 16 this year.

Gujarat has reported 21 encephalitis deaths some of which tested positive for Chandipura virus. Fatalities in Uttar Pradesh have now risen to 503. Media reports from Jharkhand indicate 2 fatalities and 1 each from Rajasthan, Haryana, Karnataka and Uttarakhand. In total, 1,434 encephalitis deaths so far this year.

Surha Khurd village resident Tola Nandncpra four-year-old granddaughter Nouri Almin Ansari had high fever on October 22. Naurngia Nebua family took him to the primary health center, where two days after the treatment the doctor has referred the medical college. During the treatment Nouri died Friday at the Medical College. Doctors reported that his death was caused by encephalitis. In this village one after another people are scared to death of children from encephalitis. Because a week ago in the village Tola Jurhi two sons Saif Ali Mazhar Hussain on the 16th and the 17th of Danish died from encephalitis. The village hamlet Shyambdn Kushwaha Piprpati August 21 marked one year son died during treatment at the Medical College. Sahni's five-year-old son Rinku's Ramvriksh here too are victims of encephalitis in the world, died on September seven. But the health department about the disease is not showing any seriousness.
