Many media outlets put the figure for Bihar higher than 162 fatalities. My current total for Bihar is 222. Gujarat has reported 21 encephalitis deaths some of which tested positive for Chandipura virus. Fatalities in Uttar Pradesh have now risen to 612. Media reports indicate 2 fatalities each from Jharkhand and Karnataka and 1 each from Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttarakhand. In total, 1,557 encephalitis deaths so far this year.

If we look at data from Additional Director, Office of Health in 2005 deaths from meningitis in 1135 was the highest figure for any year since then to less than 400.
