Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

So there might be a very large undercount of deaths due to A/H1N1 in Mexico

I agree. If you go back to April, remember that they reported hundreds of suspect deaths at the beginning, but only confirmed a couple dozen.

Puebla, where this is going on, has only reported FIVE confirmed deaths during the entire pandemic.

Concealment reported flu cases in Sinaloa
They note that state health teachers recorded the deaths of two professors from pneumonia, when in fact died of H1N1 virus

Culiacan, Sinaloa Tuesday, 06 octubre of 2009
09:07 The teachers union accused the Health sector to conceal the death of two teachers of technical secondary schools in Culiacan and Guasave A1HN1 human influenza, since in the death certificate identifies "problems of pneumonia."

Quinonez Jaime Mu?oz, secretary general of Section XXVII of the National Union of Education Workers, said that data are available on a very high number of mentors who are infected and hospitalized, so Health is required to react in their care.

He said relatives of the teacher Juan Carlos Castro Salazar, Technical School Tajito Guasave and Jesus Navarro, a similar school in Culiacan, have elements of medical opinion and support these died of human influenza virus.

About these cases last week, Secretary of Health, Hector Ponce Ramos, said it has recorded only one death from this disease since the first broadcast the alert, and it was a teenager in the city Mazatlan. :tiphat:http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/631311.html

Atypical pneumonia and influenza, seasonal, more serious than AH1N1: SSA E-Mail E-Mail

The Federal Health Ministry recommended to the state governments to amend the criteria for epidemiological surveillance, to detect changes in patterns of transmission of respiratory infections.

Today Maria de Jesus Gutierrez, Director of Epidemiological Surveillance Federal SSA, said that today the problem is no longer AH1N1 influenza because the malignancy is controlled, "stable" Vazquez said.

He considered that it is required "to do a thorough review" the cases submitted by atypical pneumonia and seasonal influenza and the Severe Acute Respiratory Infections because there is no greater mortality.

As the virus AH1N1 the federal work stated that only 10% of proven cases are severe and lead to death in their carriers, said that only one of every three suspects are positive for human influenza and 90 percent are mild cases having only three or four days of discomfort.

In paying a lecture "Current Status of Influenza and perspective" to state officials from SSA, IMSS, ISSSTE and Issstep and medical poblanos, Gutierrez emphasized today that "instead of focusing on a numerical tracking of cases counted , health authorities must ensure quality care for all patients, not only influenza AH1N1, because the goal is to prevent deaths from any disease.

Multan to drivers for violating sanitary

Die 2 operator, suffered pneumonia

For not complying with the guidelines recommended hygiene sanitation, public transport service began to receive fines from the Ministry of Communications and Transport, said Lazaro Jimenez Aquino. The official said the fines could be up to 50 days' wages for failing to comply with the recommendations. It also said it is not mandatory that drivers using masks and latex gloves because they work long hours and these measures are inconvenient.

Lazaro Jimenez denied that the deaths of two operators that occurred last week on routes 53 and 72, were human influenza, as cases have not yet been confirmed by health authorities but admitted that the victims suffered from pneumonia that was fulminating and resulted in death pathways. He recommended that we must await confirmation from health officials and recommended to the delegates of the routes remain alert. The aim is to detect drivers who have flu symptoms to be treated in time and prevent further infections.

A risk group president of the Alliance for Transportation, Jesus Morales Paz, confirmed the deaths of two operators for respiratory diseases that were complicated by pneumonia and requested an analysis to see if they were victims of human influenza.

The union of carriers requested support from the SCT to ask the authorities of the Health Ministry that the operators are considered as risk group due to the contact you have with users and are working for fourteen hours straight. The operators, he said, are exposed to cold and heat, sudden changes that impact their health, hence the need for vaccination during their Health Week.

The Lazarus Jim?nez, deputy secretary of Transportation, made a new appeal in 180 transport routes of Puebla and the metropolitan area for action spray that take more than ten minutes.

? A professor died in the IMSS specialty clinic.

Juan Santos Carrera . Juan Santos Carrera.
Classes were suspended at 5 thousand 200 students from the Instituto Tecnologico de Orizaba (ITO) to the presumption of death of a professor because of Influenza Virus Type A H1N1 and forcing management to disinfect all facilities of the Maximum Casa de Estudios de Orizaba.

Students of the ITO, informed the media that a teacher, teaching the area of industrial engineering, applied two weeks leave for their state of pregnancy, but died in the Specialty Clinic of Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) of this city of Orizaba.

This was confirmed by the deputy director of administrative services of the campus, Adrian Reyes Benitez who said the baby was saved by Institute staff, not the professor:

"He commented that his death was related to the influenza virus type A H1N1, however we are not certain that this well has been, the cause of death says the medical certificate was acute pneumonia, which had his lungs stop functioning.

For this reason classes were suspended in the ITO, cleaning staff was responsible, supported by teachers, to wash and disinfect main hobble the classroom, table benches, desks, restrooms, stairways, hallways, railings and a desk to avoid more infections among academic staff, manual or the student community itself.

"This situation was already scheduled within the control aspects of contingency that we caused by influenza can not remember the month but was in March or April we did a similar task," concluded the respondent who announced that next Monday, the Classes will resume as normal and disinfected the entire campus.

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

I have made another submittal to ProMed.

Good luck. I doubt this will get a ProMed posting. Seasonal flu does not get reported on ProMed (and that is what they are blaming this on), and Pandemic H1N1 only gets "big picture" stories, and an increase in cases in one locality will not merit a posting.

It is the same reason we could not get a ProMed posting in April.

Post #69 is a duplicate of #64, but we might want to keep it because of the different emphasis.

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

Two points here. Only one positive case in the city of Matamoros? That is a fairly large city, right on the border of the US at Brownsville, Texas. Secondly, where the blue star is, Google actually inserted the words "bird flu". Come on, Google. Tracking this is hard enough without that kind of nonsense...

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

Maybe the virus has changed in a way that the current tests are not working. If this is the case then I encourage the CDC to get there and investigate. I know testing is poor down there but it can't be that poor.

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

The previous post (#71) also indicates that out of 540 suspects, only 38 have come back positive for Pandemic H1N1, whereas across the border in the US, 95% of the flu is H1N1.

I read it as a 7% positive rate - which could also indicate they are not doing the nasal swabs correctly. Texas percent positive is 30.5% in most recent report.

I didn't even think of that one - perhaps the lab is good, but the swabbing is poor. Remember, in the severe cases, H1N1 can be more difficult to detect - remember the lesson of Matt and Mindy McIntosh.

Would immunofluorescence tests provide more false negatives than PCR? I have seen no evidence that PCR testing is being done anywhere in Mexico.

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

You know, I think that there might be different varients of this virus. One that causes mild infection and one that is severe.

Re: Growing atypical pneumonia cases in Puebla

You know, I think that there might be different varients of this virus. One that causes mild infection and one that is severe.

The US CDC has been looking for that for the past five months and found no evidence of that.

The epidemiology is also not consistent with that - if that were true, if you got the virus from a severe case, you would get a severe case, and if your contact had a mild illness, so would you.

But the principal of the school in NYC in April died after having contact with mild cases in his students (as did Matt McIntosh), and of the 1,900+ fatalities in the US, only one (McIntosh again) had a fatal case in a family member.

The above post (Hat-tip Ironorehopper) mentions that the CDC did detect one sample that they believe was a drift variant. I have no clue where this came from geographicallly. Could this have come from Mexico? It is likely that such a virus would test negative by Mexico's testing methods. Could such a virus be spreading widely in Mexico?
