Something I realized on finding these articles:

It appears that the INDRE is still the only ones in Mexico confirming cases of Pandemic H1N1. In the US, testing is going on all over the place, not just at the CDC. But apparently Mexico is still doing all its testing centrally, which at this point is odd, unless you simply want to assume all respiratory illness is H1N1, which really isn't a bad assumption.

I'm sure the increase in atypical pneumonia patients is due to Pandemic H1N1, but they don't seem to want to test most of them - they suspect that most of the atypical pneumonia cases are caused by seasonal pathogens (note no signs of quarantine or contact tracing), but note that there is an increase in these cases since last year.

My reading of the highlighted comments is that the atypical pneumonias are testing postive for influenza A, but not testing postive for H1N1 (one report says only ONE tested positive for H1n1, which implies that they tested for it, but didn't find it). It is possible that it could be associated with new brisbane variant H3n2 or, there might be an H1n1 virus shift such that negative tests are returned for H1N1.

If the uplift in deaths is significant, hopefully someone somewhere is checking on this.

If the uplift in deaths is significant, hopefully someone somewhere is checking on this.

They said a 10% increase in atypical pneumonia cases occurred, and they reported 103 cases in the past month. That means that they are only looking at about 10 extra cases beyond what is normal for that hospital. It is clear that this is a major hospital that treats a lot of (seasonal) respiratory illness.

It is possible that this pandemic caused Mexico to change the way it tests for flu, but in April, at least, Mexico did not use rapid tests or PCR to identify influenza - they used immunoflorescence. That's why we couldn't tell the difference between a new strain of flu, and a completely novel virus. Furthermore, only INDRE could perform these tests (and that still holds - hospitals can't test for themselves), so it is likely that most of these cases aren't even being tested.
