67 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed and a total of 333 infected with the virus

The positive cases of COVID-19 in Paraguay are increasing. Tonight, as usual, the Health Minister, Dr. Julio Mazzoleni, confirmed that after having processed a total of 439 samples, 67 were positive, thus reaching 333 infected with the virus.

However, on this atypical Labor Day not all the news is negative, since the number of recoveries is also increasing and to date there are already 115 people who have overcome the disease.

Another peculiar point that puts a cold cloth on the situation is that of the 67 positives, 63 are travelers from Brazil, 3 travelers from other destinations and a contact with a positive case, there is not a single case without a link. All of them are isolated in different shelters complying with the corresponding quarantine. In addition, Mazzoleni reported that there are 5 people interned.

Smart quarantine

Starting this Monday, May 4, in Paraguay the "smart quarantine" will be implemented and it is estimated that around 700 thousand people will resume their work activities. In this regard, Minister Julio Mazzoleni explained today at a press conference that the first phase includes workers from industries, factories, mechanical workshops, public works, and civil works. In addition to service providers at the client's home, masseurs, hairdressers, manicures, pedicures, domestic service, gardening, delivery, collectors and also individual physical activity.

In a time that surprised everyone, the Minister of Health, Julio Mazzoleni, reported that 37 new COVID-19 infections were registered in the country, bringing the total to 370 confirmed. Like yesterday, the majority (35) of those newly infected are people who came from abroad and were serving the mandatory quarantine in shelters. Today 424 samples were analyzed.

Of the 37 infected, 35 are people who entered the country from abroad, 28 came from Brazil. One of the infections was caused by contact with another sick person and a new case without a link was also registered. The Secretary of State also reported that four people are hospitalized, while four others have recovered, thus totaling 119 people who no longer have the active virus.

Likewise, Mazzoleni said that the delivery time of the report is changed due to the increase in samples and the need to accurately confirm the links. “I will report new changes as they occur. @msaludpy #QuedateEnCasa #NosCuidamosEntreTodos ”, he wrote from his Twitter account.

Thus, in two days, Paraguay registered 91 cases of COVID-19 from Brazil. For this reason, the country's efforts, beyond the measures taken at the local level, should focus on strict control of the border with Brazil.

With the considerable increase in imported cases of coronavirus, Paraguay is located in the penultimate place, with Venezuela being the country with the fewest infections. Recall that Brazil tops the list of nations with the most infected and also with the highest number of deaths in the region.

Eight of nine confirmed infections in Paraguay are from returnees from Brazil
EFE - Asunci?n
05/06/2020 - 22: 27h

Eight of the nine coronavirus cases reported this Wednesday in Paraguay are from repatriated citizens of Brazil in compulsory quarantine, and the total number of infections amounts to 440, reported Health Minister Julio Mazzoleni.

The minister announced on social networks that in the last 24 hours a total of 584 samples were processed, the highest number since the detection of the first case, on March 7, of which one was only by connection with another previous positive, in addition to 9 boarding schools and 7 that have recovered.

Fatal cases remain at 10.

The authorities' alarm went off last day 1 when the Ministry of Health reported 63 positives among returnees from the neighboring country of a total of 67 confirmed infections after 439 tests were processed.

Between May 1 and Wednesday 6, 174 positive cases were computed, of which 164 are from shots taken in shelters of people who entered from Brazil for humanitarian reasons amid the border blockade imposed by the Government among the restriction measures .

However, of the 63 positive cases of people arriving from the neighboring country six days ago, the number of contagion has decreased in recent days, reaching 8 in six days.

Paraguay, in mandatory quarantine for almost two months, has reported relatively low cases compared to those registered in neighbors such as Argentina and Brazil, with which it has an extensive and poorly guarded border.

Brazil "is one of the countries most reluctant to implement contingency measures (against the pandemic) and it is quite a difficult task to control a border of more than 700 kilometers," the head of Parliament, Blas Llano, told a newspaper.

The head of the Senate expressed himself thus after a meeting of the three branches of the State with the head of State, Mario Abdo Ben?tez, this Wednesday to discuss control measures against massive returns from abroad, mainly from Brazil, and the controlled return of the productive activities.

In total, Paraguay has repatriated more than 2,200 nationals stranded abroad during the quarantine, of whom nearly 1,700 were in Brazil.

Since March 23, Paraguayans who returned from abroad have been housed in 42 shelters created in different parts of the country amid other measures taken such as the closure of borders and restriction of movement of vehicles and people.

Another front of attention of the authorities is the one that corresponds to the Office of the Prosecutor against people who violate the health quarantine, a total of 2937 accused until this Wednesday, the Public Ministry said in a statement.

That number of people is being prosecuted throughout the country "for punishable acts related to the health quarantine at the risk of expansion of coronavirus."

One of those accused is a 22-year-old man who fled early Tuesday morning from a shelter in Ciudad del Este, on the border with Brazil, and is being sought by the police and the Public Ministry.

Published May 8 2020

Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Ben?tez urged the population on Friday to maintain the isolation decreed by the Government in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

In this sense, the president described as "good results" the fact that Paraguayans were complying with the quarantine and expressed that citizens should not "relax" in the face of the guidelines of health agencies, since if the South American country succeeds flatten the curve of infected by Covid-19, Paraguay would advance to the commercial reopening.

The governor also stated that the border closure measure will continue to counter possible new contagion of coronavirus, in turn revealed the strengthening of the country's militarization.

Paraguay: 126 new cases of Covid-19, most of Brazil

The Minister of Public Health, Julio Mazzoleni reported that in the last 24 hours the number of patients rose to 689 in total, and that the number of examinations carried out (800) is a record per day as well as the 126 positives of the day.

The head of the health portfolio added that 10 people are hospitalized and there are three new recovered, with which there are already 155 patients cured of Covid-19 in the country. The total number of confirmed cases on the 60th day of quarantine amounts to 689.

Mazzoleni expressed the Government's concern about the situation of the pandemic in Brazil, considering that almost all the recently confirmed cases in Paraguay are from compatriots who returned from the neighboring nation.

"We are extremely concerned about the high viral circulation in Brazil and the extremely high viral load that compatriots (returnees) have, most of them asymptomatic," he said.

He stressed that his viral loads are very high, different from those detected in Asunci?n or Central. For this reason, the test taking protocol was modified.

"Previously at 14 days, the test was taken for returnees in shelters, and a week ago we modified that protocol taking the test on the first day of arrival of the compatriot," he said.

He argued that those affected are mostly young people who were highly exposed because they passed through several delicate cities before being able to reach the border.

He drew attention to some negativity on the part of the compatriots in the shelters, since as they are asymptomatic they do not respect the health recommendations of physical distance and hygiene.

He expressed his concern about the attitude of Paraguayans who are serving quarantine in shelters, who do not believe in the Covid-19 disease.
