Ontario COVID numbers: 693 people in hospital, 249 in intensive care

Ontario is reporting 693 people in hospital with COVID on Monday with 249 in intensive care units.

This is up by 9 hospitalizations and an increase of two for ICUs since the previous day, though officials noted not all hospitals reported updated figures due to the weekend.

Last Monday, there were 849 hospitalizations with 279 in ICU...

...However, latest figures from last week show roughly 47 per cent of those hospitalized with COVID were admitted for other reasons. Of those in intensive care with the virus, roughly 20 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 1,074 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to testing restrictions. The provincial case total now stands at 1,114,284.

Of the 1,074 new cases recorded, the data showed 146 were unvaccinated people, 38 were partially vaccinated people, 827 were fully vaccinated people. For 63 people the vaccination status was unknown.

The death toll in the province has risen to 12,574 as four more virus-related deaths were added...

Ontario is reporting 779 people in hospital with COVID on Tuesday, with 246 in intensive care units.

This is up by 86 hospitalizations but a decrease of three in ICUs since the previous day. Last Tuesday, there were 914 hospitalizations with 278 in ICU.

The province recently began distinguishing between those who were admitted to hospital directly because of COVID, and those who were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.

Of the 779 people in hospital with COVID-19, 44 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 56 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 246 people in ICUs with the virus, 82 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 18 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 1,208 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday...

Ontario is reporting 751 people in hospital with COVID on Wednesday, with 241 in intensive care units.

This is down by 28 hospitalizations and a decrease of five in ICUs since the previous day. Last Wednesday, there were 847 hospitalizations with 273 in ICU...

...Of the 751 people in hospital with COVID-19, 46 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 54 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 241 people in ICUs with the virus, 82 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 18 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 1,947 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday...

...The death toll in the province has risen to 12,618 as 27 more virus-related deaths were added. Wednesday’s report indicated 20 of the deaths occurred within the last 30 days while seven of the deaths occurred more than a month ago...

Ontario reported 20 net new deaths from COVID-19 on Thursday, as hospitalizations appeared to hit a downward plateau and a new investigation effort found 489 of the province’s total COVID-19 deaths were likely not caused by the viral infection.

The Ministry of Health said 14 of the new deaths occurred in the past 30 days, while six others occurred prior to that period.

Two of the deaths involved residents of the long-term care system.

Using new methodology where deaths where a clear alternative cause, likely not in any way brought about by a COVID-19 infection are removed from the total, the province says it has suffered 12,149 deaths from COVID-19 since March 2020, down from the cumulative total of 12,638 people who died after testing positive for COVID-19 reported on Thursday.

Yesterday, Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario Dr. Kieran Moore announced a plan to end masking in most public indoor spaces and schools by March 21, along with greatly relaxed isolation rules and no more active symptom screening.

It appears most local medical officers of health in Ontario, including those in Toronto and Durham Region, will go along with that deadline, while York Region’s local medical officer of health Dr. Barry Pakes told CP24 on Wednesday night that “it would have been reasonable to wait a little bit longer” than March 21.

The move is also opposed by most epidemiologists in the province, as well as Mississauga's mayor, Ontario’s school principals and the teachers’ unions.

Moore said individual choices on when to wear masks must be respected by all, and also suggested province may see a slight temporary increase in infection and hospitalizations as a result.

There were 742 patients in hospital due to COVID-19 infection across the province on Thursday, down only nine from one day prior.

Of those, 244 were in intensive care, an increase of three from Wednesday, and 130 were breathing with the hep of a ventilator.

Of the 2,125 new cases detected though limited PCR testing on Thursday, the Ministry of Health said 209 cases involved unvaccinated people, 47 involved partially vaccinated people, 1,760 involved people with at least two doses of vaccine and 109 involved people whose vaccination status was not known...

The province is reporting 722 people in hospital with COVID-19 Saturday, with 232 patients in intensive care.

The latest number of hospitalizations is an increase of five from Friday’s data.

However, this is a drop of over 70 hospitalizations in comparison to last Saturday’s hospitalizations which stood at 795.

Of the 722 people hospitalized, around 47 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while about 53 per cent were admitted for other reasons but then tested positive for COVID-19.

There are now 232 patients in intensive care units due to the virus (down by six from the previous day)...

Ontario is reporting nine additional COVID-19-related deaths on Sunday as well as 228 people in intensive care.

The province did not report on Sunday how many people are currently testing positive for COVID-19 while receiving treatment in Ontario hospitals.

The number of patients reported to be in intensive care with COVID-19 is down slightly from 247 on Saturday.

The breakdown of patients being treated in hospital specifically for COVID-19 was also not released on Sunday.

Of the nine additional COVID-19-related deaths on Sunday, health officials said eight occurred in the past month, while one occurred more than a month ago.

At least 1,631 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours amid limited access to testing across the province.

Those cases were identified through 11,874 tests, which the province said generated a positivity rate of 11.7 per cent...

Provincial health officials say no new virus-related deaths were confirmed in the past 24 hours as mandatory COVID-19 vaccination and testing policies end in Ontario hospitals, long-term care homes, and schools.

For the second consecutive day, the province has not released data on the number of COVID-19 patients receiving treatment in Ontario hospitals.

Officials said there are 228 COVID-19 patients in intensive care, unchanged from Sunday but down from 249 last Monday.

Ontario's COVID-19 death toll also remains unchanged at 12,256 as no new deaths were reported today. It is the first time in nearly three months that no new deaths were reported in the province in a 24-hour period.

The Ministry of Health recently purged a number of fatalities from the province's total after determining that the deaths were unrelated to COVID-19. Since March 10, about four per cent, or 489 deaths, were removed from Ontario's cumulative total.

Officials have now committed to breaking down deaths by "fatality type," including whether COVID was the cause of death, contributed to the death, or if the cause of death is unknown or missing.

Another 1,116 COVID-19 cases were confirmed by provincial labs today but that number is not an accurate reflection of the true burden of infection due to testing restrictions.

The province did not provide a breakdown of the vaccination status of today's confirmed cases...

Ontario is reporting 649 people hospitalized with COVID-19 and 16 more deaths linked to the virus Wednesday as ICU numbers continue to decline.

Today's reported hospitalizations mark a decline from 688 the day before and 751 exactly one week ago.

About 47 per cent of those admitted to hospital were directly seeking treatment for COVID-19 symptoms, while 53 per cent were admitted for other reasons but have since tested positive for the virus.

Of the hospitalizations reported, there are 204 patients in intensive care, which is down from the 220 reported Tuesday and 241 at this exact time last week.

​About 79 per cent of those patients were admitted to ICU specifically for the virus, while the rest were admitted for other reasons but also tested positive for the virus.

The 16 additional deaths reported by the province push the official death toll to 12,288.

Another 2,011 new COVID-19 cases have also been logged, though the province's medical officer of health has warned the actual number of new cases is likely ten times higher, due to limited PCR testing available...

This is down by five for both hospitalizations and in ICUs since the previous day. Last Thursday, there were 742 hospitalizations with 244 in ICU.

The province recently began distinguishing between those who were admitted to hospital directly because of COVID, and those who were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.

Of the 199 people in ICUs with the virus, 75 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 25 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Ontario is reporting 615 people in hospital with COVID on Friday, with 193 in intensive care units as figures continue to trend downward.

This is down by 29 for hospitalizations and a decrease of six in ICUs since the previous day. Last Friday, there were 717 hospitalizations with 238 in ICU.

Hospitalizations and patients in ICUs are at the lowest seen since late December 2021...

...Of the 615 people in hospital with COVID-19, 44.5 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 55.5 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 193 people in ICUs with the virus, 79 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 21 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 2,502 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to testing restrictions. The provincial case total now stands at 1,134,443...
