1,704 people hospitalized in Ontario with COVID-19, 414 in intensive care

A total of 1,704 people were receiving treatment in an Ontario hospital on Saturday with COVID-19, as the province continues to battle the pandemic.

New data released by the province on Feb. 12 suggests a drop in the number of people in hospital from the previous day. A total of 1,829 people were hospitalized the day prior.

The numbers also suggested a drop in the number of people receiving care in an intensive care unit (ICU).

On Friday, 435 people were in an Ontario ICU, however, that number fell to 414 Saturday.

The province said there were currently 267 people on a ventilator...

A total of 1,540 people are in an Ontario hospital with COVID-19, as the province continues to endure the pandemic.

New data released by the province on Sunday suggests 402 people were receiving care in an intensive care unit (ICU), while 244 were on a ventilator.

The hospitalizations and ICU admissions on Sunday mark a drop from numbers reported the day earlier.

On Saturday, the province said 1,704 people were hospitalized, with 414 in ICU.

However, in a tweet, Ontario’s Health Minister Christine Elliott noted that not all hospitals submit data on weekends.

A total of 2,265 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Ontario on Sunday. However, experts say this is likely an underrepresentation of the virus’ spread in the province, as more stringent testing rules have been implemented...

Ontario health officials are reporting a significant drop in the number of people with COVID-19 in hospital and intensive care units on Monday.

The province said 1,369 people are currently in hospital with COVID-19, which is down from the 1,540 reported Sunday. The number of people in ICU also fell from 402 to 394.

The total number of patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-19 hasn’t fallen below 400 since early January.

The province also reported that eight more people have died due to COVID-19 over the past 30 days...

...The province reported 1,765 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, but health officials have warned that number is an underestimate due to testing limitations and backlogs.

With 9,962 tests processed in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health says the province's positivity rate is about 13 per cent...

Ontario will be moving to the next step of its COVID-19 reopening plan on Thursday, four days ahead of schedule, and will lift proof of vaccination requirements at the beginning of March.

Speaking at a news conference Monday morning, Premier Doug Ford said the decisions were made based on recommendations from the province’s chief medical officer of health.

Public health and workplace safety measures in effect as of February 17


The following public health and workplace safety measures will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. on February 17.

• indoor social gatherings for up to 50 people and outdoor social gatherings up to 100 people
• indoor organized public events for up to 50 people, with no limit outdoors
• no capacity limits in the following indoor public settings where proof of vaccination is required, including:
  • restaurants, bars and other food or drink establishments without dance facilities
  • non-spectator areas of sports and recreational fitness facilities, including gyms
  • cinemas
  • meeting and event spaces, including conference or convention centres
  • casinos, bingo halls and other gaming establishments
  • horse racing tracks, car racing tracks and other similar venues
  • commercial film and television productions where there is a studio audience
  • indoor areas of other settings that choose to “opt-in” to proof of vaccination requirements
• retail limited to the number of people who can maintain two metres physical distance
• personal care services limited to the number of people who can maintain two metres physical distance, with no limits if proof of vaccination requirements are in place
  • personal care services that require the removal of face coverings (such facials, saunas, steam rooms, etc.) are permitted, but anyone providing these services must wear personal protective equipment
• 50 per cent capacity in spectator areas of facilities used for sports and recreational fitness activities, concert venues and theatres
• 25 per cent indoor capacity in the following settings where proof of vaccination is required:
  • food or drink establishments with dance facilities, such as nightclubs, and wedding receptions in meeting or event spaces where there is dancing and food or drink is served
  • bathhouses and sex clubs
• indoor religious services, rites and ceremonies, including weddings and funerals, capped at the number of people that can maintain two metres of physical distance, with no limit if proof of vaccination is required
• no limit on attendees at outdoor religious services, rites or ceremonies, including weddings and funerals

Public health and workplace safety measures in effect as of March 1

If public health and health care indicators continue to improve, the following public health and workplace safety measures will come into effect on March 1, 2022.

• capacity limits lifted in all indoor public settings
• proof of vaccination requirements lifted, with businesses being allowed to implement them voluntarily
• other protective measures, such as mask/face covering requirements and active/passive screening of patrons, will be in place
• public health units can deploy local and regional responses based on local health indicators

Ontario is reporting 1,550 people in hospital with COVID on Tuesday, with 384 in intensive care units as overall figures continue to trend downwards.

This is up 131 hospitalizations but a decrease of 10 in ICUs since the previous day. On Monday, hospitalizations were an undercount due to incomplete reporting from the weekend. Last Tuesday, there were 2,254 hospitalizations with 474 in ICU.

The province recently began distinguishing between those who were admitted to hospital directly because of COVID, and those who were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.

Of the 1,550 people in hospital with COVID-19, 54 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 46 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 384 people in ICUs with the virus, 79.5 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 20.5 per cent were admitted for other reason.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 1,593 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to recent testing restrictions. The provincial case total now stands at 1,076,078.

Of the 1,593 new cases recorded, the data showed 260 were unvaccinated people, 59 were partially vaccinated people, 998 were fully vaccinated people. For 276 people the vaccination status was unknown.

The death toll in the province has risen to 12,120 as 19 more virus-related deaths were added over the past 24 days, according to a ministry of health spokesperson...

Ontario logs 47 more COVID-19 deaths as hospitalizations continue to drop

Another 47 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported in Ontario as hospitalizations drop below 1,500.

The number of hospitalized and intensive care patients has dropped steadily over the past few weeks. On Wednesday, health officials said there were now 1,403 people being treated in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19, including 364 people in ICU.

Of those hospitalized, at least 54 per cent are being treated for COVID-19 related reasons.

That number increases to about 83 per cent for patients in intensive care.

The remaining patients tested positive for the virus after being admitted for unrelated reasons.

Ontario is also reporting 47 additional deaths related to COVID-19. Forty-six of those deaths occurred over the past 30 days while the final death occurred more than a month ago.

Eleven deaths were residents in long-term care, data shows.

An additional 2,532 COVID-19 infections were logged Wednesday...

Ontario is reporting 1,342 people in hospital with COVID on Thursday, with 356 in intensive care units as overall figures continue to trend downwards.

This is down by 61 hospitalizations and a decrease of eight in ICUs since the previous day. Last Thursday, there were 1,897 hospitalizations with 445 in ICU.

The province recently began distinguishing between those who were admitted to hospital directly because of COVID, and those who were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.

Of the 1,342 people in hospital with COVID-19, 52 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 48 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 356 people in ICUs with the virus, 80 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 20 per cent were admitted for other reasons...

Ontario is reporting 1,281 people in hospital with COVID on Friday, with 352 in intensive care units as figures continue to trend downwards. Hospitalizations are at the lowest point since early January.

This is down by 61 hospitalizations and a decrease of four in ICUs since the previous day. Last Friday, there were 1,829 hospitalizations with 435 in ICU.

The province recently began distinguishing between those who were admitted to hospital directly because of COVID, and those who were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.

Of the 1,281 people in hospital with COVID-19, 51 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 49 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 352 people in ICUs with the virus, 81 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 19 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 2,337 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to recent testing restrictions. The provincial case total now stands at 1,083,274.

Of the 2,337 new cases recorded, the data showed 303 were unvaccinated people, 81 were partially vaccinated people, 1,656 were fully vaccinated people. For 297 people the vaccination status was unknown.

The death toll in the province has risen to 12,237 as 33 more virus-related deaths were added...

Ontario reported under 1,200 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and 14 net new deaths on Saturday, as hospitalizations continue to steadily decline.

There are currently 1,191 people battling the virus in Ontario hospitals, down from 1,704 a week ago, according to the Ministry of Health.

Fifty per cent of individuals were admitted to hospital for COVID-19 and 50 per cent were admitted for other reasons but have tested positive for the virus, Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted on Saturday.

Of those hospitalized, 329 are in intensive care compared to 414 a week ago.

Elliott says 79 per cent of ICU patients were admitted for COVID-19 and 21 per cent were admitted for other reasons and have tested positive.

Fourteen people died with the virus in the past month, the ministry says.

In addition, four deaths were removed from the cumulative total due to data cleaning...

... Provincial labs processed over 14,100 tests in the past 24 hours, producing a positivity rate of 11.8 per cent compared to 11.2 per cent a week ago, the ministry says.

Ontario reported 17 net new deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, as test positivity – once a significant marker for determining the prevalence of coronavirus – fell to a new two-month low.

The Ministry of Health says they were aware of 19 new deaths due to COVID-19 that occurred within the past 30 days.

They also revised downward the number of deaths occurring more than 30 days ago by two.

There have been 171 COVID-19 deaths reported in the last week and 1,463 in the past 30 days.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said there were 1,056 patients in Ontario hospitals testing positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

Of those, 324 were in intensive care, down from 394 one week ago.

Among ICU patients, 208 were breathing with the help of a ventilator, down from 243 one week ago.

Not all hospitals report non-critical occupancy numbers on weekends.

Of the 1,966 new cases detected through PCR testing and reported on Sunday, the Ministry of Health says 285 involved unvaccinated people, 78 involved partially vaccinated people, 1,391 involved people with at least two doses of vaccine and the status of another 212 infected individuals was not known...

Ontario is reporting 1,038 people in hospital with COVID on Tuesday, with 319 in intensive care units. On Family Day Monday, there were 1,064 people reported to be in hospital with COVID, with 320 in ICUs.

Due to the holiday weekend, figures were not released on Family Day and two sets of data were released on Tuesday for both days.
Hospitalizations have trended downwards over recent weeks. Last Tuesday, there were 1,550 hospitalizations reported with 384 in ICU.

This is up by 68 hospitalizations and unchanged in ICUs since the previous day. Last Wednesday, there were 1,403 hospitalizations with 364 in ICU.

The province recently began distinguishing between those who were admitted to hospital directly because of COVID, and those who were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for the virus.

Of the 1,106 people in hospital with COVID-19, 49 per cent of them were admitted because of the virus, while 51 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.

Of the 319 people in ICUs with the virus, 77.5 per cent were admitted because of COVID, while 22.5 per cent were admitted for other reasons.

Meanwhile, Ontario also reported 1,425 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, though that is an underestimate of the true widespread transmission of the virus due to recent testing restrictions. The provincial case total now stands at 1,091,526.

Of the 1,425 new cases recorded, the data showed 215 were unvaccinated people, 47 were partially vaccinated people, 1,009 were fully vaccinated people. For 154 people the vaccination status was unknown.

The death toll in the province has risen to 12,306 as 19 more virus-related deaths were added but one death was removed based on data cleanup. A ministry of health spokesperson said the most recent deaths occurred over the past 24 days...
