Manitoba moves out of code red as COVID-19 numbers fall again

Manitoba is moving out of code red for the first time in seven months.

Dr. Jazz Atwal, deputy chief provincial public health officer, announced Friday that Manitoba is moving to the orange or restricted level of its pandemic response system.

"Manitobans worked hard and made sacrifices to make this happen," Atwal said, reporting 85 new COVID-19 cases and one additional death on Friday.

Winnipeg went to the red, or critical, level of the province's pandemic response system on Nov. 2, and was followed by the rest of the province on Nov. 12, as officials struggled to control a rising tide of cases.

The daily numbers fell back below the 100 mark on Friday after two days of being higher.

The death is a man in his 70s from the Southern Health region, linked to the B.1.1.7 (alpha) variant of concern. The total number of deaths of Manitobans linked to COVID-19 is now 1,135, including 143 related to variants of concern.

Of the 85 cases, the Winnipeg health region has 53. The Interlake-Eastern health region has 10, the Southern Health region has nine, the Northern Health Region has eight and the Prairie Mountain Health region has five.

The daily caseload isn't the only statistic that has gone down.

The current five-day test positivity rate is 5.9 per cent provincially (down from 6.4 on Thursday) and 6.5 per cent in Winnipeg (down from 6.7)...

There are 106 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Saturday and three more people have died from the illness, the province says in a news release.

The largest proportion of those new cases are in the Winnipeg health region, which has 49.

The rest are split between the Southern Health region, with 22, the Northern Health Region (18), the Interlake-Eastern health region (11) and the Prairie Mountain Health region (six), the release said.

Manitoba's latest COVID-19 deaths are all linked to the more contagious B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant, also known as the alpha variant, first seen in the U.K., the release said.

They include two men in their 50s: one from the Interlake-Eastern health region and one from the Winnipeg health region. A man in his 60s from the Winnipeg health region has also died. Those deaths bring Manitoba's total linked to the illness to 1,138, the release said.

The update comes on the first day of loosened restrictions in Manitoba after the province met its first set of vaccination targets. As of Saturday, businesses including salons and gyms are allowed to reopen and gathering sizes have been expanded in the province.

Manitoba has also now moved from the critical red level of its pandemic response system — the highest level of the colour-coded system — to the restricted orange level.

Among Manitobans 12 and up, 72.5 per cent have had one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the province's vaccination dashboard, and 35 per cent have had two doses...

A girl under age 10 has died after getting COVID-19, the province says in a news release.

The province says she lived in the Winnipeg health region but did not release any further information.

The death brings Manitoba's total linked to the illness to 1,139.

Manitoba also reported 97 new cases of the illness on Sunday, the release said.

Most of the new cases were in the Winnipeg health region, which announced 50 new infections.

The rest are split among the Northern Health Region, which has 16, the Interlake-Eastern health region, with 14, the Southern Health region, with 12, and the Prairie Mountain Health region, with five, the release says.

Manitoba's five-day test positivity rate rose again to 6.5 per cent, up from 6.1 on Saturday. Winnipeg's increased to 6.9 per cent, the release says, up from 6.7.

There are currently 193 Manitobans hospitalized with COVID-19, up by six since Saturday.

Of those patients, 64 are in intensive care, down by one. There are still 12 ICU patients in hospitals outside Manitoba as the province works to free up space in its strained hospitals: 11 in Ontario and one in Alberta, the release says...

Manitoba public health officials announced 61 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths on Monday.

It's the lowest daily case number since early April, and the first time in exactly a month that there are zero deaths.

The Winnipeg health region and Interlake-Eastern health region have most of the latest cases with 27 and 20, respectively.

The Northern Health Region has eight, the Southern Health region has four and the Prairie Mountain Health region has two.

The seven-day average daily case count in Manitoba is now 92, the lowest since April 8, when it was 89.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate in Manitoba is 6.2 per cent, down from 6.5 on Sunday. In Winnipeg, it's 5.8 per cent, which is down more than a percentage point from 6.9 on Sunday.

A total of 194 Manitobans are in hospital due to COVID-19, including 61 in intensive care. There are 50 in Manitoba ICUs and 11 in Ontario ICUs.

There are 61 new cases of COVID-19 and no deaths to report in Manitoba for the second consecutive day, a provincial news release says.

The Winnipeg health region has 29 new cases, the Northern Health Region has 15, Southern Health has 11, Interlake-Eastern has six and there are no new cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region.

There are now 1,408 active cases of COVID-19, down from more than 4,000 active cases at the beginning of the month.

Just over half of the active cases — 832 — are connected to more contagious coronavirus variants, the province's online variant dashboard says.

The bulk of them — 610 — are the B.1.1.7, or alpha variant, first discovered in the U.K. There are seven active cases of the B.617.2 or delta variant, which is believed to be even more contagious than other variants of concern...

Manitoba reported three more deaths linked to COVID-19 and 70 new cases of the illness on Wednesday.

One of the deaths was a woman in her 70s who was moved to a hospital in Ontario for critical care on June 4, a Shared Health spokesperson said.

The woman is the 12th intensive care patient to die after being moved out of Manitoba to free up space in the province's strained hospitals. That death will be added to Manitoba's total in the coming days.

Earlier Wednesday, the province announced two other deaths linked to COVID-19 in its daily news release: a man in his 30s from the Interlake-Eastern health region and a woman in her 60s from the Winnipeg health region. The latest deaths bring Manitoba's total linked to the illness to 1,141.

The man's death was linked to a variant still listed as unspecified, while the woman's was connected to the B.1.1.7 alpha variant first found in the U.K., the release said.

Of the new COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday, the Winnipeg health region has 29 new cases, the Northern Health Region has 20, the Southern Health region has 12, the Interlake-Eastern health region has seven and the Prairie Mountain Health region has two, the release said.

There are 145 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba and seven more people have died after getting the illness, the province says in a news release about pandemic numbers for the past two days.

There were 91 cases that would have been reported on Thursday — though the government did not provide a data update on Canada Day — and 54 cases Friday, deputy chief provincial health officer Dr. Jazz Atwal said at a news conference.

Of the seven deaths, five are linked to more contagious coronavirus variants, the province said.

There were three deaths of people from the Winnipeg health region who had variants of concern: a woman in her 50s and a man in his 60s who had the B.1.1.7 alpha variant and a woman in her 70s who had a variant still listed as unspecified.

A woman and a man in their 60s from the Southern Health region also had the alpha variant when they died.

Manitoba reported 48 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the province's online COVID-19 dashboard says, a number that hasn't been that low in nearly four months.

The last time the province reported fewer cases in a single day was on March 14, when there were 44 new infections. The seven-day average of new cases has now dropped to just under 69.

Manitoba's COVID-19 death toll now sits at 1,148 — up one since Friday.

The province is no longer issuing coronavirus news releases on weekends, so no further details were included about the death. The dashboard's death total is sometimes adjusted when deaths are removed due to data errors.

According to the dashboard, there are 31 new cases in the Winnipeg health region, eight in the Prairie Mountain Health region, five in the Northern Health Region and four in the Southern Health region.

The Interlake-Eastern health region reported no new cases of the illness on Saturday, according to Saturday's online update.

WINNIPEG -- As of Sunday, Manitoba is reporting 64 new cases of COVID-19 and two COVID-19 related deaths.

The numbers come from Manitoba’s COVID-19 dashboard, as the province did not release a daily bulletin this weekend. Detailed information will be released Monday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Manitoba since March 2020 now sits at 56,417.

The province currently has 1,018 active cases. So far, 54,249 Manitobans have recovered from the virus.

The COVID-19 dashboard lists the five-day test positivity rate for the province as 6 per cent, meaning it rose slightly from Saturday...

Manitoba health officials say another person with COVID-19 has died and 65 more infections have been identified.

Daily COVID-19 case counts have been falling in Manitoba recently, and chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said Monday while it’s too soon to further loosen public health orders, the province is “trending towards a post-pandemic.”

“We are heading to a place where we are going to have public health recommendations but not restrictions,” he said.

“Right now we are just in the down trend of a very severe wave three here in Manitoba, so right now we still require these restrictions, but over time, that is the goal, is to move to public health recommendations rather than restrictions.”...

36 COVID-19 cases reported in Manitoba on Tuesday, lowest daily case count since March

Manitoba is reporting 36 new cases of COVID-19 and one death on Tuesday, a provincial news release says.

The last time the daily case number was lower was on March 1, when the province reported 35 cases.

Of the new cases, 24 are in the Winnipeg health region, five are in the Interlake-Eastern health region, three are in the Southern Health region and there are two each in the Northern and Prairie Mountain health regions.

There are now 972 active cases, while 54,392 people have recovered from COVID-19.

A man in his 70s from the Southern Health region died, the release says.

To date, 1,152 people have died of COVID-19 in Manitoba.

There are now 155 COVID-19 patients in hospital, the province said, down one since Monday.

Manitoba public health officials announced 71 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, continuing a streak of double-digit daily cases.

There were two deaths reported Wednesday: a man in his 30s from the Interlake-Eastern health region who had an unspecified more contagious variant and a man in his 50s from the Winnipeg health region who had the B.1.1.7 or alpha variant.

To date, 1,154 people have died from COVID-19 in Manitoba.

There are now 990 active cases in the province, while 54,442 people have recovered from COVID-19.

Manitoba has 86 new COVID-19 cases and three more people have died in the province on Thursday.

All three deaths are related to the Alpha variant, also known as B.1.1.7.

They include a man in his 60s from the Northern Health region, a woman in her 70s from Southern Health and a man in his 70s from the Winnipeg area.

Manitoba has 74 new cases of COVID-19 and three more people have died from the disease.

The three people who died include two cases linked to the alpha variant, also known as B.1.1.7. They are both men, one in his 30s from the Winnipeg health region, and the other in his 70s from the Prairie Mountain Health region.

The third person who died is a man in his 80s, also from the Prairie Mountain Health region.

A total of 1,160 people have died with COVID-19 in Manitoba.

A man in his 70s from the Interlake-Eastern Regional health region has died. The case is linked to the B.1.1.7 or alpha variant.

There have now been 1,162 people who have died with COVID-19 in Manitoba.

As of Monday, there are 138 patients in the hospital with COVID-19, with 33 in intensive care.

That includes three Manitoba patients in intensive care units outside the province, all in Ontario, a news release says.

In the daily COVID-19 bulletin on Tuesday, the province announced 25 new cases, bringing the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 56,943. The province noted two cases were removed due to a data error.

The province is also reporting one COVID-19 related death, a man in his 40s from the Winnipeg Health Region. His death is linked to the B.1.1.7 (alpha) variant of concern.

Manitoba reports no deaths, 53 cases of COVID-19

Manitoba announced 53 more cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths Wednesday, only the eighth time since the beginning of May that zero deaths have been reported.

There are 129 people in hospital, down two from Tuesday, including 31 patients in intensive care, the province's COVID-19 dashboard says.

The provincial test positivity rate is down to four per cent, with the rate in Winnipeg now at 3.8 per cent — the lowest for either in over three months.

The provincial rate hasn't been this low since the beginning of April, and Winnipeg's rate hasn't been this low since the end of March.

There are 42 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Thursday and one more person has died from the illness, the province says in a news release.
