Manitoba reports 7 more COVID-19 deaths, including 6 linked to more contagious variants
Most of province's 292 cases announced Sunday are in Winnipeg health region
CBC News · Posted: May 30, 2021 12:30 PM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Seven more Manitobans have died after getting COVID-19, the province announced on Sunday as it reported 292 new cases of the illness.

Five of the men who died had contracted the B117 coronavirus variant first identified in the U.K., the province said in a news release.

That included one man in his 60s from the Interlake-Eastern health region, one in his 70s from the Northern Health Region and three — in their 40s, 60s and 70s — from the Winnipeg health region.

The deaths of two men in their 70s from the Southern Health region were also reported, including one who had an unspecified coronavirus variant. They bring Manitoba's total deaths linked to COVID-19 to 1,052, the release said.

While updates on coronavirus variants are only provided in Manitoba Tuesday through Saturday, the latest numbers show the more infectious strains make up more than 60 per cent of the province's total 4,569 COVID-19 cases that are still considered active.

The B117 variant now makes up nearly half Manitoba's known cases of the more contagious strains, the province's online variant dashboard says.

Meanwhile, more than 60 per cent of Manitoba's latest COVID-19 cases are in the Winnipeg health region, which reported 183 infections.

The area's five-day test positivity rate is now 13.6 per cent, down from 14 on Friday. That number was not updated on Saturday because of technical issues, the province said at the time.

'Unprecedented': 30 COVID-19 patients admitted to Manitoba ICUs in a 48-hour period

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba's devastating third wave of COVID-19 continues to be a challenge for hospitals, with Shared Health reporting 30 COVID-19 patients being admitted to the ICU over 48 hours between Friday and Sunday.

The health-care provider calls the number of admissions, "unprecedented."

In a news conference Monday, Dr. Brent Roussin, the chief provincial public health officer, said Manitobans need to continue to follow restrictions, so hospitalization rates fall.

"Right now, we are seeing too many Manitobans requiring hospital care, especially requiring ICU care. We know that we have too many people in our ICUs in Manitoba as well as other provinces," He said.

Dr. Roussin said even if the case numbers fall, the strain on Manitoba's ICUs will still remain high.

"We are dealing with a lot of case numbers right now, so high case number puts (a) strain on the health-care system," he said. "Of course, that's a lagging indicator, so if we see these case counts coming down, we are still going to see strain on the health-care system for a week or two."

To date, 246 COVID-19 patients have been admitted to ICUs in Manitoba for May.

Shared Health said the number is nearly five times greater than the 50 COVID-19 patients admitted to ICU the previous month.

As of midnight Monday, 122 patients were in a Manitoba ICU, including 71 patients who have or are recovering from COVID-19. Shared Health noted a record 17 COVID-19 patients under the age of 40 were in ICU, a 54 per cent jump from only one week ago.

Shared Health said the normal, pre-COVID-19 baseline capacity for ICU is 72 patients.

Public health officials are reminding Manitobans that in most cases, they should only seek testing at a provincial test site if they are symptomatic or have been advised by public health that they are a close contact. This will help ensure those who need to be tested can continue to access testing as easily as possible. Manitobans have several options available to access testing, including drive-thru and walk-in sites, or by booking an appointment by calling (toll-free) 1-855-268-4318 or online at select sites at www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/testing/locations.html#appointment.

Additional data on variants of concern is updated from Tuesday to Saturday at https://geoportal.gov.mb.ca/. Data related to COVID-19, outbreaks and some downloadable and historic data can also be found at this site.

Outbreaks have been declared at Seven Oaks General Hospital, 3U7 and the Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre in Winnipeg. The facilities have been moved to the Critical (Red) level on the #RestartMB Pandemic Response System.

Possible exposure locations are listed online by region at the province’s #RestartMB Pandemic Response System webpage. For up-to-date information on possible public exposures to COVID-19 in regions, visit www.gov.mb.ca/covid19/updates/flights.html#event and click on your region.

With variant of concern (VOC) cases accounting for more than 50 per cent of all new COVID-19 cases, public health will no longer specifically notify people if their test screened or sequenced positive for any VOC. This will allow for the continuation of aggressive case and contact management overall as public health officials are treating every positive case as if they have a VOC. VOC data will continue to be reported on the dashboard and broken down by regional health authorities.

Updated enforcement statistics are posted online weekly. For more information, go to Cross-Departmental Reports at https://manitoba.ca/openmb/infomb/de...nts/index.html.
