Manitoba is reporting 259 new cases of COVID-19, as well as a possible exposure to a more contagious coronavirus variant on a flight that landed in Winnipeg earlier this month.

The possible exposure took place on WestJet Flight WS526, which departed Calgary at 9:50 p.m. on April 16, and arrived in Winnipeg at 1 a.m. The exposure affects rows one to six, a provincial release says.

Most of the new COVID-19 cases announced Sunday were in the Winnipeg health region, which posted 188 new infections.

There are also 25 cases in both the Northern and Prairie Mountain health regions, 15 in the Southern Health region and six in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

No new deaths were reported on Sunday.

210 new COVID-19 cases, 1 variant-linked death reported in Manitoba on Monday
4 deaths now linked to more contagious coronavirus variants, probable case of B1617 variant from India
Rachel Bergen ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 26, 2021 11:46 AM CT | Last Updated: 40 minutes ago

Manitoba is reporting 210 new cases of COVID-19 and one death linked to a more contagious coronavirus variant.

There are early indications public health officials may have detected a variant of interest associated with India, Manitoba's chief public health officer said at a press conference on Monday.

The B1617 variant hasn't been confirmed with further testing, he said.

"We need Manitobans to understand how critical we are right now in a race between vaccinations and the variants of concern, and really this means staying home as much as possible," Dr. Brent Roussin said.

Most of the new COVID-19 cases announced Monday were in the Winnipeg health region, which posted 157 new infections, a provincial news release says. There are also 19 new cases in the Prairie Mountain Health region, 15 in the Northern Health Region, 12 in the Interlake-Eastern health region and seven in the Southern Health region.

More contagious variant cases of COVID-19 surge by over 300 in Manitoba
Manitoba reports 218 new COVID-19 cases as active variant caseload rises to 687
Bryce Hoye ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 27, 2021 12:33 PM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Manitoba announced 218 more COVID-19 cases and no new deaths on Tuesday, and the number of more contagious variants continues to grow.

Most new COVID-19 cases ? 156 ? are in Winnipeg, with 30 detected in the Prairie Mountain Health region, 15 in Southern Health, 12 in Northern Health and five in Interlake-Eastern.

The total number of variants of concern jumped to 1,641 from 1,309 on Saturday. It takes longer to identify variants, and since the provincial variant dashboard is updated from Tuesday to Saturday, the jump represents cases detected during at least the past two days.

The active variant caseload rose by more than 100 to 687 on Tuesday.

Nearly half of all variant cases in Manitoba have popped up in Winnipeg, and most provincewide are linked to the B117 strain originally detected in the U.K.

Almost a third of variant cases are listed as "unspecified," and the remainder are cases of the B1351 and P1 strains that emerged in South Africa and Brazil, respectively...

A variant associated with India may also be in Manitoba as of last week but that case requires further confirmation, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said.

The provincial test positivity rate fell slightly to 7.5 per cent ? which is still up from 4.3 per cent one month ago ? while the rate in Winnipeg increased slightly to 8.4 per cent. Winnipeg's rate has more than doubled in the past four weeks.

Testing has also increased alongside test positivity and cases: the seven-day average for tests is just over 3,000 as of Tuesday, compared to around 1,150 three weeks ago...

New COVID-19 deaths include 2 people in 20s as Manitoba announces 189 cases
More contagious coronavirus variant cases rise to 1,688, making up nearly a third of all active cases
Bryce Hoye ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 28, 2021 12:32 PM CT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Two people in their 20s have died due to COVID-19 ? one due to a coronavirus variant ? as 189 new cases were reported in Manitoba today.

The three deaths announced Wednesday were a woman in her 20s from the Northern Health Region, a man in his 20s from Winnipeg who had an unspecified more contagious variant, and a woman in her 100s from Southern Health who had the B117 variant originally detected in the U.K.

So far, 971 Manitobans have died of COVID-19, including six deaths linked to variants.

The total number of variant cases to date also increased to 1,688 from 1,641. Of Manitoba's 2,206 active cases, 656 are variants. Most are B117 and located in Winnipeg.

The news comes as Manitoba enters a four-week stretch of restrictions on Wednesday, brought in to slow the tide of rising daily case counts and hospitalizations.

For the second day in a row, the provincial test positivity is 7.5 per cent ? twice what it was a month ago ? and it's 8.4 per cent in Winnipeg...

Manitoba announced 230 more coronavirus cases and two more deaths due to COVID-19 on Thursday, while the number of more contagious variant cases surged by over 200.

The total number of variant cases in the province rose from 1,688 to 1,900, which means about a third of Manitoba's 2,263 active COVID-19 cases ? 754 ? are now linked to variants.

The number of cases of the P1 variant originally detected in Brazil rose from four a few days ago to nine.

The majority of variant cases to date are concentrated in Winnipeg, with the B117 strain initially found in the U.K. the most common.

The two deaths are a woman in her 50s and a man in his 60s, both from the Northern Health Region.

The news comes after Premier Brian Pallister announced that Manitoba teachers and education workers will soon be able to get vaccinated in North Dakota. The U.S. state has agreed to include teachers in an arrangement that allows Manitoba truckers regularly entering the state to be vaccinated there...

Manitoba hospitals are ramping up critical care systems as an influx of patients in the past two weeks ? many of them younger and sicker than in previous waves of the pandemic ? is beginning to strain intensive care units.

The third wave of the coronavirus pandemic has put more people in hospital over the past two weeks, which has triggered the need to add more ICU beds and postpone some surgeries.

Manitoba reports 491 COVID-19 cases, numbers expected to worsen in coming weeks: official

Manitoba reported 491 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths from the virus Friday, as modelling numbers show daily case counts and ICU numbers likely to rise in the coming weeks.

Dr. Jazz Atwal, the deputy chief public health officer, says the current spike in case numbers and hospitalization rates is being made worse by people not following the rules.

He says too many people are still gathering and interacting with others, despite public health orders that have been tightened three times in the last month.

Atwal released new modelling that suggests the daily number of new cases will likely rise for another week, and intensive care usage might rise for another four weeks.

Atwal says that is going to put a lot of stress on the health-care system.

Since March 2020, the province has reported 44,189 cases of COVID-19 after two previously announced cases were removed Friday due to what health officials say are data corrections.

The number of Manitobans with COVID-19 who have died remains at 1,002...
