5 more cases of more contagious B117 virus variant found in Manitoba
Cameron MacLean ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 06, 2021 9:24 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Manitoba's chief public health officer warned that the province is racing against an impending third wave of COVID-19 cases as it tries to keep cases down while ramping up vaccines.

Two more people have died due to COVID-19 and there are 62 new cases of the coronavirus in Manitoba, health officials announced Tuesday.

In his first public briefing since the Easter holiday weekend, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said we won't see the impacts of any possible increased transmission from gatherings until two to four weeks from now.

"Because we've seen the variant cases here, if the transmission includes that variant, then this could be where we see our third wave begin," he said...

Another variant case was found, but hasn't yet been categorized, in the Interlake-Eastern Health region, while two cases from Winnipeg still haven't been classified either.

The first cases of coronavirus variants were reported in early February.

The B117 variant makes up the bulk of variant cases in Manitoba to date at 261. Twenty are the B1351 variant that was originally found in South Africa, and 18 variant cases have yet to be further classified.

139 new COVID-19 cases, 3 deaths reported in Manitoba on Thursday
Winnipeg man in 70s is 1st known to have died in Manitoba with a coronavirus variant
Caitlyn Gowriluk ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 08, 2021 11:01 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

There are 139 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba on Thursday and three more people have died from the illness, the province says in a news release.

The update came as Manitoba announced its first death linked to a coronavirus variant of concern. A man in his 70s from the Winnipeg health region died in late March after contracting the B117 strain first identified in the U.K., the release says.

The sequencing results that determined the case was a variant came back after the man died, Chief Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Brent Roussin said on a call with reporters.

Sixty of the new COVID-19 cases announced on Thursday are in the Winnipeg health region, the release says.

There are 55 in the Northern Health Region, 18 in the Prairie Mountain Health region and six in the Southern Health region. No new cases were announced in the Interlake-Eastern health region, the release says.

The COVID-19 deaths announced Thursday are a man and a woman in their 70s, with the latter linked to the outbreak at Holy Family Home, and a woman in her 80s. All three deaths were in the Winnipeg health region, the release says.

Manitoba 'in the beginnings of a 3rd wave' as 179 new COVID-19 cases reported: task force leader
New infections mark highest single-day jump since end of January
Caitlyn Gowriluk ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 09, 2021 12:30 PM CT | Last Updated: 7 minutes ago

Manitoba may soon tighten its pandemic rules once again, the leader of the province's vaccine task force cautioned as officials reported the highest daily COVID-19 case count in months.

"I just want to be clear that we are in the beginnings of a third wave in Manitoba. So your actions are critical right now," Dr. Joss Reimer said Friday, urging people to reduce their contacts, stay home whenever possible and wear a mask when spending time with people they don't live with ? even if it's outside.

"If we can't control the transmission of COVID-19, Manitobans may see more restrictions in the days ahead."

Reimer's warning came as the province reported 179 new infections on Friday, the highest single-day increase since Jan. 24 ? near the tail end of Manitoba's second wave of COVID-19. The province announced 222 cases that day, which was also the last time it posted a daily increase above 200.

Three more deaths linked to the illness were also announced on Friday, including a man in his 20s from the Northern Health Region, the province said in a news release.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s in the Winnipeg health region have also died, the province said. The woman's death was linked to an outbreak at Golden Links Lodge. Those deaths bring Manitoba's total to 949...

Manitoba is reporting 135 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and one death ? a woman in her 80s from the Winnipeg health region.

Of the new cases, most ? 71 ? are in the Winnipeg health region, the province said in a news release.

There are also 33 new cases in the Northern Health Region, 18 in Southern Health, nine in Prairie Mountain Health and four in the Interlake-Eastern health region.

The latest COVID-19 death brings Manitoba's total linked to the illness to 949 (one previously reported death was removed from the province's total due to a data correction).

The province is warning the public of possible exposures to a more contagious coronavirus variant at two Winnipeg stores earlier this month.

People may have been exposed to the B117 coronavirus variant, which was first discovered in the U.K., at the Costco at 1499 Regent Ave. on April 1, between 2 and 3 p.m., and at the No Frills grocery store at 1500 Plessis Rd. between 2:30 and 4 p.m., the release says.

Anyone concerned about their potential exposure to the B117 variant should call Health Links at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 to determine whether they need to be tested, the province says.

On Friday, the province reported a total of 376 cases of variants of concern, including 332 cases of the B117 variant and 20 cases of B1351 variant, which was first discovered in South Africa. Another 24 variant of concern cases hadn't yet been categorized as of Friday's update...

Outdoor mask mandate, tighter restrictions on indoor activities considered as Manitoba COVID-19 numbers rise
More people getting COVID-19 at indoor private gatherings, top doctor says
Bryce Hoye ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 12, 2021 9:47 AM CT | Last Updated: 30 minutes ago

Manitoba is considering mandatory masks outdoors and a renewed clampdown on indoor activities as daily COVID-19 case tallies continue to hit triple digits.

Manitoba announced 114 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths on Monday and the province's top doctor hinted more restrictions may soon come into effect.

"This is a third wave," said Dr. Brent Roussin, chief provincial health officer. "If we don't act now, we will be right back into stricter restrictions very soon."

The latest data shows close contacts of positive cases have been increasing, and more cases are being tied to private gatherings, Roussin said.

More young people age 10 to 19 appear to be contracting the virus outside of school settings, he said.

The provincial test positivity rate is up to 6.2 per cent, up from 5.7 per cent on Sunday.

The number of people in hospital dropped from 141 on Sunday to 135 on Monday.

Manitoba announced 135 new cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths Tuesday, as well as the first reported case of a more contagious coronavirus variant detected in the province's north.

The number of cases stemming from variants in the province also jumped by 67.

That brings the total number of variant cases to 479, up from 412 on Saturday. The province only reports variant cases on its provincial dashboard from Tuesday to Saturday, so the uptick represents at least two days of data.

Of the new deaths, one is a man in his 80s from Winnipeg and is connected with an outbreak at Holy Family Centre.

The other death announced Tuesday is a Winnipeg man in his 60s. His death, which is linked to the B117 coronavirus variant originally detected in the U.K., brings the total number of variant-related deaths to two.

Eighty-nine per cent of the variant cases in Manitoba are the B117 strain, according to the province. About four per cent are B1351 and seven per cent require further confirmation.

The bulk of variant cases to date have surfaced in Winnipeg. Half are linked to close contacts and a quarter have no known source. The rest are tied to travel or require more investigation...

'We don't like what we're starting to see' as virus variants make up 40% of Winnipeg cases in 1 week: Atwal

Caitlyn Gowriluk ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 16, 2021 9:22 AM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

Highly contagious coronavirus variants are on the rise in Manitoba ? and if people don't start following pandemic rules, they'll soon see tighter restrictions, the province's acting deputy chief public health officer says.

In the Winnipeg health region alone, the more infectious strains made up nearly 40 per cent of new cases in the first week of April, Dr. Jazz Atwal said at a news conference on Friday.

"We don't like what we're starting to see," Atwal said, adding that Manitoba's test positivity rate rose nearly two per cent in the last two weeks, and cases among younger people are also increasing.

"We don't want to have to introduce public health measures, but we are working on finalizing our plans and we'll be sharing information on any new restrictions in the coming days. What we introduce will depend on the numbers that we're seeing and the epidemiology of the cases over the next short period of time."

On Friday, 57 new cases of more contagious coronavirus variants were reported in Manitoba, the province's variant dashboard says.

That brings the total infections linked to the strains to 704 ? most of which are the B117 variant first seen in the U.K., though the province has also reported several cases of the B1351 strain first seen in South Africa and one case of the P1 variant, which has become associated with Brazil...

Manitoba announces jump in coronavirus variant cases, death linked to B117
Total variants to date up 300; active variant caseload spikes to 499 from 277
Bryce Hoye ? CBC News ? Posted: Apr 23, 2021 12:32 PM CT | Last Updated: 1 hour ago

The total number of coronavirus variant cases in Manitoba shot up by 300 Friday and two more people have died with COVID-19, one of them due to a more contagious variant.

Public health officials also announced 181 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with most of the cases in Winnipeg.

There has been a significant increase in cases since last Friday, when Dr. Jazz Atwal said officials were "comfortable" with where things were.

However, people continue to get together and that's promoting transmission of the virus, the acting deputy chief provincial public health officer said at a news conference Friday.

"These social gatherings keep coming to the forefront in our contact investigations," Atwal said.

The news comes a few days after Manitoba reintroduced some restrictions. Households may only have two designated visitors, and various businesses and places of worship have had their capacity limits decreased.

Manitoba also identified three at-risk neighbourhoods in Winnipeg on Friday where anyone 18 or older is now eligible to be vaccinated.

The number of Manitobans in hospital due to COVID-19 decreased slightly to 144, with 35 of those people in intensive care. The number in hospital has remained steady lately, but the number in ICU has been trending up in recent weeks, Atwal said...
