Three more suspected H1N1 cases in Nashik

NASHIK: Three new patients suspected to have contracted the H1N1 virus have been admitted to the Civil Hospital, thereby taking total number of suspected cases in Nashik to 10.

Medical officers at the hospital said out of the seven patients admitted there, while three tested positive for H1N1, the remaining four patients, including a nursing student of the hospital, have tested negative.

Of the three admitted recently, one is a 27-year-old from the Rana Pratap Chowk area, another a 50-year-old from Niphad and the third a nursing student of the hospital. These three are now receiving treatment.

H1N1 case dies of heart failure

A 45-year-old man from Bhiwandi, who had been admitted to Kasturba hospital and tested positive for H1N1 on April 6, died of a cardiac arrest at Nair hospital, according to civic officials. In a re-test, however, he had tested negative for H1N1. He was admitted to the isolation facility at Kasturba following repeated complaints of respiratory distress. On Tuesday, he was shifted to Nair hospital for cardiac problems. "He had already completed his Tamiflu regimen. The death was caused by a cardiac arrest. When we shifted him to Nair hospital, he was tested again and the test reports came out negative." said Dr Anil Bandivdekar, executive health officer, BMC. Talking about preventative measures for people who have been in touch with swine flu patients, he said, "In patients who test positive for H1N1, we do contact tracing. And only if the contacts exhibit symptoms of H1N1 are they tested and given Tamiflu. The guidelines say that Tamiflu medication should be administered judiciously."

The BMC on Friday claimed to have been unaware of city?s first swine flu death as the victim was not from Mumbai, and the case did not fall under its jurisdiction.
A 23-year-old pregnant woman, Trushali Laxman Divade, from Dhule had died on Thursday afternoon at the state-run JJ Hospital, Byculla.
BMC authorities however, were quick to clarify that as the patient was already critical when she was brought in for treatment to the city, the case did not fall under its jurisdiction, and cannot be listed as a Mumbai death.

PUNE: An infant and an elderly woman succumbed to the H1N1 influenza in the city, taking the toll in the district to 15 in the last 30 days. The city had reported the first swine flu casualty after a long gap, exactly on the same date last month.

Four-and-a-half-month old Om Shivankar of Satavwadi in Hadapsar died at Noble Hospital at 6.55 am on Saturday, while Sarala Dalwale (78) of Ganesh Peth died at the KEM hospital at 9.55 pm on Friday. "Both of them had tested positive for H1N1 influenza," said city health chief S T Pardeshi of the Pune Municipal Corporation

Two more test positive for H1N1 in Mumbai


MUMBAI: Two more persons tested positive for H1N1 influenza virus on Sunday, taking the toll of positive cases in the city to 16 since March.

The incidence of positive cases and deaths across the state, especially in Pune, has seen a resurgence since March, after the virus lay dormant for most part of last year.

BMC's epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare said the two patients were a 56-year old woman from Gamdevi and a 36-year-old man from Prabhadevi. "Both are taking treatment from private practitioners and doing well. They have not been admitted to any hospital so far," Gomare said. She added that the patients' relatives as well as those in contact with them would also be checked and if needed, put on anti-viral drug Tamiflu.

One more tests positive for swine flu

The patient has been admitted to a private hospital and is under observation, the BMC officials said. With the latest addition, the number of H1N1 cases in Mumbai has risen to 17 since March. On Sunday, two more patients had tested positive for the swine flu virus and are currently undergoing treatment on an OPD-basis.

Mumbai: 18 tests positive for swine flu


Mumbai, Apr 18 (IBNS) With a woman from Worli testing positive for H1N1 virus, the total number of swine flu victims rose to 18 in Mumbai, reports said on Wednesday.


According to Maharashtra health officials, six people tested positive for swine flu last week, including a 72-year-old woman from Worli area.

"The woman is stable. She was given Tamiflu," said Dr Mangala Gomare, assistant health officer of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

"There is no reason to panic," said Gomare.

Urban Mumbai is largely safe from a swine flu breakout as unlike 2009, the deadly H1N1 virus is a concern only in rural and semi-urban areas for now, media reports citing government experts said.

Post delivery, H1N1 patient taken off ventilator after a month

After spending one month and seven days in the critical care unit of Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital (ABMH), swine flu patient Jayashree Gandhale (30), who had to undergo a premature C-section, was taken off the ventilator for the first time on Wednesday. But doctors have not yet stated that she is out of danger.

?This was the first pregnant woman to be referred to our hospital on March 7 when there was a sudden spurt in H1N1 cases,? said Dr Mohan K T, pulmonologist and intensivist at the hospital. This year, Pune has seen nine swine flu deaths in March and six in April.

PCMC medical officer Dr Milind Jawale said seven-month pregnant Jayashree showed symptoms of swine flu on March 4 and was taken to Sassoon Hospital.

But she had to be shifted to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital due to renovation work at Sassoon?s Infosys ward and a planned C-section was done on her to prevent any infection to the child. ?The child does not have swine flu and is coping well,? said Dr Mohan.

25-year-old woman another H1N1 suspect

NASHIK: A 25-year-old woman from the Cidco area of the city, who is suspected to have contracted swine flu, was admitted to the Civil Hospital on Friday.

This takes the total number of suspects of H1N1 taking treatment at Civil Hospital to three. Two more patients under treatment are suspected to have caught the deadly virus. However, reports on whether they have contracted swine flu or not have not yet arrived.

4-month-old tests positive for H1N1 in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A four-month-old boy from Malad, possibly one of the youngest to test positive for H1N1 in the city, pushed the number of positive cases to 19 since March. The child was admitted to Wadia Hospital in Parel.

BMC's epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare said the baby had been suffering from persistent fever and a sore throat . "He has been undergoing treatment for a few days now. The hospital started the anti-viral treatment before sending the samples to Haffkine Research Institute for examination," she said. Gomare said the child was stable . Last month, a six-year-old boy from Mulund had also tested positive for H1N1.

7th swine flu death in city in April

After a gap of several days, Pune registered another swine flu death late on Sunday, making it the seventh casualty this month. Bhaskar Shinde (48) from Shikrapur in Shirur taluka was admitted to KEM hospital on April 16. He had pneumonia and according to PMC health officials, the patient also had stress-related diabetes and poor liver function.

3-year-old tests positive for H1N1

MUMBAI: A three-year-old from Malad tested positive for H1N1 on Wednesday, taking the count of positive cases to 20 since last month. Last week, the boy's four-month-old brother too tested positive for the virus.

While the child had to be admitted to Wadia Hospital, the elder brother is undergoing treatment at home. BMC's epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare said, "The child is doing fine. He has already been started on the anti-viral regimen," she said, adding that the four-month-old was discharged on Monday. The case came to light when the BMC, as part of its protocol, checked everyone in the toddler's family for the infection.

Gomare said that in children, the anti-viral or Tamiflu is administered depending on their age and weight. Child specialists have been fielding queries on how siblings can be protected from transmitting the infection to each other. A paediatrician from Kokilaben hospital, Dr Tanu Singhal, said preventing the spread of an infection that transmits through the respiratory route is rather tough. "Parents should watch out for flu-like infections, high fever lasting over three days, breathlessness and rush to a doctor," she said.
