Jim, That is the first Nashik death a 34 yo. See post #96. The fatality I'm referring to in #99 is a 35 yo and would be the second death in Nashik.

Suspected swine flu boy tests HINI positive

NAGPUR: After a gap of about twenty months since August 2010, swine flu is back in the region. The 18-year-old boy from Bhadravati in Chandrapur district admitted to ward number 25, the swine flu ward at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), turned out be the first victim of the infection from region as the reports obtained from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, declared him H1N1 positive. His blood sample was sent by GMCH to NIOV on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old pregnant woman from a nearby tehsil was also admitted to ICCU at GMCH with suspected symptoms. The blood sample of the patient has already been sent to NIV.

Professor and head of the preventive and social medicine department and the acting medical superintendent of the hospital Dr Arun Humne told TOI that he received the report of Bhadrawati boy late Wednesday night. "He had tested positive at a private laboratory. But we had to wait for NIV confirmation as per the procedure laid down by the government. The boy has tested HINI positive. He is doing well and would be alright within a few days. He was not bad when he was admitted and has been responding well to the treatment," he said.

Three more persons in the city were tested positive for the H1N1 (swine) flu virus on Thursday, taking the total number of positive patients to 11. A 26-year-old woman, a 45-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were tested positive after their samples were sent to Super Religare Laboratories.

?The three patients have been administered Tamiflu and are now stable. They are under the care of private doctors. The 19-year-old is a friend of a swine flu patient and the virus was transmitted via contact,? said Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC assistant health officer.

Swine flu: 48-year-old dies, death toll up to 26


Pune: One more person has died in Pune of swine flu, taking the death toll in the city to 11 this year. The victim was a 48-year-old diabetic patient and was admitted on March 26 with fever and breathlessness. The swine flu death toll in the country has now gone up to 26 this year.

Doctors say that most of the cases have had underlying health complications. At least 330 H1N1 positive cases have been reported from six states. The Health Ministry is monitoring the situation. State health authorities say government hospitals have stockpiled the first line of treatment, Tamiflu.

Scientists at the National Institute of Virology IN Pune have seen 10 per cent to 15 per cent rise in swine flu cases in March.

48-year-old woman dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 48-year-old woman from Ganeshnagar died of swine flu in the city on Thursday, taking the death toll in Pune district to 12 since March 14. With this, the state's death tally has gone up to 14, including two swine flu casualties reported in Nashik in the last two days.

Meanwhile, 12 more people - 10 from Pune and two from Pimpri-Chinchwad - tested positive for swine flu infection on March 5.

Four more test positive for H1N1 in Mumbai


As the mercury rises, the number of H1N1 cases is also mounting in the city. On Thursday, three more people from Mumbai and one from Bhiwandi tested positive for H1N1, taking the total number of swine flu cases from Mumbaio since March to 11.

The three patients from Mumbai are under observation at various private hospitals, civic officials said. One is a 26-year-old woman, the second a 45-year-old man, and the last a 19-year-old from Bandra, whose relatives had recently tested positive for H1N1.

The Bhiwandi local (45) has been admitted to Kasturba hospital, city?s only infectious diseases hospital, as he has complaints of respiratory discomfort.

The city got seven positive cases last month, of which only one needed admission in Kasturba. A six-year-old boy, his grandmother (57) and father (37), from Mulund, were the first few to test positive for H1N1 influenza virus in the city.

Two friends, a 57-year-old male from Bandra and a 53-year-old male from Elphinston Road with a travel history to Alibaug tested positive for H1N1 last week. Earlier, a 23-year-old man who did not have any travel history to Pune tested positive for H1N1.

Five more swine flu suspects

NASHIK: The count of suspected H1N1 patients at the Civil Hospital rose to eight on Friday with five more patients admitted, one on Thursday and four on Friday.

However, a 20-year-old woman undergoing treatment in the isolation ward of the hospital was discharged after she recovered from the disease, officials said.

Hospital sources said while reports of three suspected swine flu patients admitted to the hospital on Thursday were being awaited, one more patient was admitted the same day and four others were brought on Friday.

Pune Swine Flu update: Total number of cases goes up to 260

Two persons, including a four-year-old, fell critically ill with H1N1 in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on Friday, taking the number of critically ill patients to four in Pune district. Two are being treated in Pune and the other two in Pimpri-Chinchwad. Eight more people tested positive for the virus. The total number of cases in Pune is around 260. However, health officials said there was no reason to panic and there wouldn’t be a repeat of the 2009 scenario.

Swine flu claims one in Pimpri

PUNE: Sheetal Baban Ambavade (29), a resident of Yashwantnagar in Pimpri, died of swine flu on Friday, taking the death toll in the district to 13 since March 14. One more person from Pimpri tested positive on Saturday.

A health official from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation said, "Ambavade was admitted to the D Y Patil Medical College on April 2. She was put on ventilator support immediately. Her throat swab, which was sent for testing on April 3, tested positive for swine flu on Friday. Ambavade's condition deteriorated in the last two days. She succumbed around 7.45 pm."

One of eight admitted has swine flu

NASHIK: Seven of the eight patients admitted to the Civil Hospital on suspicion of swine flu have been discharged from the hospital after their medical reports came negative. One patient, however, has tested positive, and treatment on him is underway. Meanwhile, another patient, a 50-year-old man from Niphad, was admitted yesterday on the suspicion of an H1N1 infection. His reports are awaited.

13 test positive for swine flu


PUNE: As many as 13 people - 12 from Pune and one from Pimpri Chinchwad - tested positive for swine flu on Sunday while conditions of three critically ill swine flu patients remained unchanged.

State epidemiologist Pradip Awate, however, maintained there was no reason to panic, saying one or two cases would continue to emerge periodically.

Experts said the virus transmission would go down with the rise in temperature. "The prolonged winter has come to an end and the summer heat is all here. The transmission of the swine flu virus will go down with the rise in mercury," Awate said.

The state's death toll has gone up to 15 with two casualties reported in Nashik in the last few days.

50-year-old tests positive for H1N1

NASHIK: One more patient has tested positive for H1N1. A fifty-year-old person from Niphad, who was admitted in civil hospital on Saturday was diagnosed positive for swine flu. According to Civil Hospital sources, the medication has been started.

Having claimed two lives in the city last week, the deadly virus has spread quite a concern among Nashikites.

A few days ago, there were eight patients admitted in the isolation ward of the Civil Hospital, suspected to have been infected with the H1N1 virus. With the exception of one all the others tested negative The sole patient that tested positive was soon treated. To safeguard against the spread of the virus, an isolation ward has been set up at Civil Hospital, in additiona to one more at the NMC's Zakir Hussain hospital and the state government's Super Specialty hospital at Shalimar. An isolation ward has also been set up at Vasant Pawar Research and Medical College.

Two people succumbed to the virus early in April; Nandu Dattu Chavan (34), of Anjaneri in Trimbak tehsil, died on April 1, and Bharat Sharesingh Thakur died died on April 4. Since then, a few more patients have been admitted after being suspected of having contracted the virus. All have been reportedly treated and discharged after having testedpositive for the H1N1virus.

Swine flu death: Hospitals on alert

AHMEDABAD: After the death of Sarkhej resident Yasminbanu Iqbal Hussain (57) due to swine flu on Sunday, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials have issued guidelines to all the hospitals in city. The corporation hospitals and even the corporate hospitals have been asked to have an isolation ward along with round the clock trained staff.

Yasminbanu succumbed to swine flu at V S Hospital on Sunday. This is the first death due to H1N1 virus in the city in the current year. Yasminbanu was admitted to the hospital on April 6. AMC health officials said eight persons who had come in direct contact with Yasminbanu have been put in isolation and are being administered prophylaxis treatment for the dreaded virus. The AMC has also begun a survey of 201 houses in the area where Yasminbanu was staying.

4 more swine flu suspects admitted

NASHIK: Four more patients suspected to be infected with the H1N1 virus have been admitted to the Civil Hospital. While three patients were admitted on Tuesday, a 70-year-old patient was admitted late on Monday night to the isolation ward of the hospital.

One among the patients is a 50-year-old woman from the city. Medical officers from the hospital working in the isolation ward said that the total number of patients admitted in the isolation ward were six, with one found positive for H1N1 and one negative.

Meanwhile, the examination reports for the four new patients are awaited, medical officers at the Civil Hospital said.

17-year-old dies of swine flu in Aurangabad

PUNE: A 17-year-old youth from Jalna succumbed to H1N1 influenza at a government medical college hospital in Aurangabad on Wednesday. With this, the state's swine flu death toll has gone up to 17.

State epidemiologist Pradip Awate said the boy had been suffering from a kidney ailment. This is the fourth swine flu death outside Pune. Nashik has already reported three casualties so far. The virus has claimed 13 lives in Pune district since March 14 - eight in Pune and five in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

1st H1N1 death in city this year swine flu claims pregnant woman


Swine flu claimed the first life in the city yesterday, with a 23-year-old woman from Dhule succumbing to the H1N1 virus at JJ hospital, a day after delivering a dead foetus eight months into pregnancy. Trushali Laxman Divade was rushed to JJ hospital on Tuesday, after doctors treating her at Dhule suspected that she had contracted the deadly virus.

She came to the facility with bilateral pneumonia leading to severe respiratory distress. Doctors immediately put her on ventilator and a regimen of Tamiflu, and sent her throat swabs to Haffkine Institute for lab testing. The test reports arrived hours after she died around 11:30 pm at the hospital’s critical care unit.

Even as the central health ministry issued an official statement saying that the swine flu situation is under control, state officials say the virologists believe that the H1N1 resurgence would abate in 2-3 weeks.

While the officials claim that H1N1 cases in Pune are already on downward trend and the same was reported to the central team from New Delhi, the statistics don?t seem to suggest so. While the mortality rate has definitely gone down with only two deaths in April as compared to eleven deaths in March, the numbers are yet to subside.

In March 2012, 271 people had tested positive for H1N1. ?Till April 11, 128 people tested positive in Pune district. The cases could be more as greater number of people is getting screened for H1N1. Not all of them may be symptomatic,? said Dr Ashok Ingle, medical officer, Aundh General Hospital, which is monitoring H1N1 situation.
