A 27-year-old man from Sion tested positive for swine flu or H1N1 virus on Wednesday, said civic sources. The patient, who is already undergoing treatment for swine flu, had travelled to Pune recently. This is the sixth positive case for H1N1 virus in the city in the past week.

Record 25,080 screened for H1N1 in district; 14 positive

Tuesday's record of 11,793 persons screened for H1N1 virus in a single day was surpassed yesterday, with 25,080 people undergoing the process at various centres across the district. Fourteen persons tested positive for the swine flu virus during the screening, raising the total number of H1N1 cases to 219.

Dr Vijay Powar, resident medical officer at District Civil Hospital, said two patients were still on ventilator support, one each at Deenanath Mageshkar Hospital and Aditya Birla Hospital, while 14 patients continued to be in ICU. Seven patients have been discharged from hospital and 84 others are currently in isolation wards at different medical centres.

Report H1N1 cases to us first, BMC tells labs

The BMC will be sending a notice to private laboratories, instructing them not to go public with information about positive swine flu (H1N1) cases without informing the health authorities first.

When swine flu broke out in 2009, an official protocol was established right then that private labs conducting tests should submit a collective report to the BMC.

Dr AA Bandiwadekar, executive health officer, BMC, said, ?We will be making it clear to hospitals and private labs like Super Religare Laboratories (SRL) that H1N1 cases have to be informed to us before being made public.?

According to reports received from SRL, five people have tested positive for H1N1 in the past week. Three of them belong to the same family in Mulund (a six-year-old boy, his father and grandmother), one is from Elphinstone Road and one from Bandra.

Pune Swine flu (H1N1) update: 33 more people test positive

29th March: 33 more people tested positive for the swine flu virus in Pune on Thursday. The Maharasthra state government has decided to set up a high-level committee to monitor swine flu treatment and its spread in cities including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Mumbai. In other swine flu related news the Serum Institute of India has announced that it may shut down the plant where Nasovac, an intra-nasal swine flu vaccine is manufactured due to lack of demand. 20 lakh units of the vaccine were destroyed due to lack of demand last year.

Swine flu patient dies of heart attack

Sheshrao Shriniwas Pillai, who died on Sunday after a heart attack, was also infected with the H1N1 virus (swine flu), said health officials. The patient was a diabetic with myocardial infarction and triple vessel disease, they added.

As many as 244 swine flu cases were reported in March alone. Dr S T Pardeshi, chief medical officer, PMC, said Pillai’s death was mainly due to the triple vessel disease leading to a heart attack. Pillai, of Kondhwa, was admitted to KEM Hospital on March 29. He was put on ventilator support on March 31. The National Institute of Virology confirmed he had swine flu. There have been nine swine flu deaths so far, said health officials. Pillai, they said, was critical and had suffered a heart attack. “He was detected with swine flu,” said Pardeshi, who said he had no morbid conditions which led to his death. Surveillance measures were under way, he added.

PUNE: A middle-aged man from Kondhwa died of swine flu on Sunday, taking the death toll in Pune district to 10 since March 14 this year. The death will, however, be enumerated as the first swine flu casualty in the current financial year 2012-13, the health official said.

Sheshrao Shrinivas Pille, 50, was in the isolation intensive care unit of KEM hospital since March 29.

Mumbai:
Measures in place to combat swine flu

With seven swine flu cases reported in the city, the civic body is making efforts to ensure that sufficient arrangements are in place for an aggravated situation.

The BMC has directed all laboratories and hospitals, both private and public, to submit daily reports of suspected swine flu samples they receive for conducting tests.

“All laboratories have been submitting detailed reports of samples to us. Since mostly private labs are receiving the suspect samples, we have been co-ordinating with them on a regular basis,” said Dr Mangala Gomare , assistant health officer, BMC.

The Kasturba Hospital saw its first swine flu case admission in the year on Thursday with a 23-year-old patient testing positive for the H1N1 virus. The patient is now stable after being administered Tamiflu.

The civic body has ensured sufficient stock of the drug. “This is not an epidemic situation and it is highly unlikely that we will need excess doses of Tamiflu. However, even if the need arises, we have enough supply of Tamiflu and nasal syringes,” said Dr A A Bandivdekar, executive health officer, BMC.

Rajendra Maruti Gaikwad of Siddharth Nagar, Dapodi, died of swine flu on Monday. He is the 11th person to succumb to the virus. Dr Milind Jawale, PCMC medical officer, said Gaikwad was admitted to D Y Patil Hospital on March 28 with acute gastroentritis and breathlessness. Jawale said he was administered Tamiflu medication and tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Monday. Meanwhile, in PMC area, eight new H1N1 cases were detected. Two patients are on ventilator support at KEM and Jehangir Hospitals, said PMC health chief Dr S T Pardeshi. ENS

Suspected swine flu case found

NAGPUR: Swine flu being witnessed in cities like Mumbai, Chennai and even Bhopal, surrounding the city from all sides, has made its presence felt in Nagpur as well. A teenager hailing from Bhadravati in Chandrapur was admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with the disease on Monday.

Though the youngster had tested positive in a report made by a private Mumbai laboratory, the doctors say they would wait for the blood report from Pune's National Institute of Virology to confirm the condition. Doctors from the hospital say that one positive case does not require the citizens to panic. A day after the patient was admitted to the hospital, superintendent Dr Arun Humne and deputy superintendent Dr WS Barsagade inspected the swine flu ward.

Swine flu returns, 350 people test positive

Mumbai: It's the return of swine flu with more than 350 people testing positive, and a 34-year-old in Nashik becoming the 25th casualty this season. Should we be worried? Maharashtra seems to be bearing the brunt of this outbreak of swine flu.

A 34-year-old in Nashik died in the local civil hospital shortly after being admitted, even as two more people were tested positive in the area. It takes the toll due to swine flu in the state to 11, with 24 deaths across the country, in the past week.

Six states ? Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu ? have reported more than 330 cases. Pune has been worst hit, registering 250 cases and 10 of the 11 casualties, in the past month. The Pune Municipal Hospital has earmarked 47 hospitals and clinics, where swine flu patients can be treated in isolation.
