Woman who contracted H1N1 during pregnancy dies

Jayashree Gandhale (30) from Kondhwa who had contracted swine flu two months ago died due to multi-organ failure on Sunday night at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital.

PCMC medical officer Dr Milind Jawale said seven-month pregnant Gandhale showed symptoms of swine flu on March 4 and was taken to Sassoon Hospital. But she was shifted to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital where a C-section was done on her to prevent any infection to the child. ?The child does not have swine flu and is well,? said Dr Mohan K T, pulmonologist and intensivist at the hospital.

Gandhale was the first pregnant woman to contract swine flu this year in the city. She had been referred to Aditya Birla Hospital on March 7 and after being treated for more than a month she was taken off the ventilator for 10 days but she became critical again.

Comment - I'm not sure of the start date for this count, but it is unlikely to include the 3 deaths from 2011 (top of this thread). So 26 deaths in 2012 is implied which is one more than the totals given in the State reports. - Ro

4 more afflicted with swine flu

On Sunday four people tested positive for swine flu in the city taking the total tally of positive cases to 33 since April this year.

The cases include a 30-month-old from Bandra and a three-year-old from Vikhroli, who was admitted at the civic run Kasturba Hospital in
Mahalaxmi.

"With the arriving monsoon, temperatures will dip which is a conducive climate for the growth of the H1N1 virus. But people should not panic and visit the doctor immediately," said Dr Pradeep Awate, swine flu in-charge at the Maharashtra Directorate of Health Services.
