AES outbreak in Araria claims eight kids

An outbreak of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Araria district of Bihar has claimed the lives of eight children over the past six weeks.
The outbreak came after the disease killed over 130 children and affected over 700 of them in Muzaffarpur and its adjacent districts in north Bihar in May and June this year.
Araria Civil Surgeon Dr B K Thakur said, "All deaths due to AES have been recorded in the district between August 12 and September 24. We have no information of any other child being affected by the disease after that."

#Lucknow #Uttar Pradesh Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Monday that he was personally monitoring the measures being taken up to tackle Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) that has till now claimed nearly 340 lives in eastern parts of the Uttar Pradesh. The Minister said that the government mulled setting up more research centers in collaboration with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in Gorakhpur and other adjoining districts of the state to this effect.
?Not only in Delhi, I am also taking stock of the work being done by United States based Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in helping the state government to tackle the disease,? the Minister said replying to media questions during a video press conference from the national capital on Tuesday.
?We are also planning to set up more research centres with ICMR, increase the super specialty facility at Gorakhpur Medical College among other measures. All the efforts in the direction of preventing further deaths is on top priority of our government,? Vardhan added.
Experts from Atlanta (US) based CDC have recently visited the worst affected districts. The agency will submit preliminary recommendations to the state government before visiting again in October.
