The total for Bihar has not changed in quite some time, but many media outlets put the figure higher than 159 fatalities. My current total for Bihar is 210. Gujarat has reported 21 encephalitis deaths some of which tested positive for Chandipura virus. The fatality figure from West Bengal is very close to my tally of 264 deaths. Fatalities in Uttar Pradesh have now risen to 249. Media reports from Jharkhand indicate 2 fatalities and 1 each from Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Meghalaya. In total, 1,087 encephalitis deaths so far this year with the height of the season still to come in Uttar Pradesh.

Admin forms team to control Japanese Encephalitis

AMPATI: Even as South West Garo Hills gears up to tackle the threat posed by Japanese Encephalitis which has already claimed a life in the area, the district lacks a fogging machine required to spray malathion, an insecticide which can control mosquitoes.

South West Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh, who chaired an emergency meeting at his office on Friday in which a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to prevent and control Japanese Encephalitis was constituted, said he would try to procure a fogging machine at the earliest.

Medical department clarifies on Japanese Encephalitis

It stated that due to reported case of JE deaths in the districts of Dimapur, Mokokchung and Wokha in 2009 and 2010, the Immunization Division, MoH&FW, GoI had advised mass vaccination of all children in the age group of 1-15 years in these districts only. Six months after the mass vaccination, JE vaccination was incorporated into the routine immunization programme in these districts. The Immunization division, GoI had advocated administration of two doses of the vaccine-1st dose at 9-12 months and 2nd dose at 16-24 months. The vaccine supplied is SA-14-14-2, a live-attenuated vaccine manufactured by Chengdu Institute of Biological Products, China having an efficacy of 90-95%. The sero-conversion (antibody formation in the body) is about 28 days and so is of not much use during epidemics.

The JE vaccine is made available in all government health units free of cost in the three districts of Dimapur, Wokha and Mokokchung. All children in the age group of 1-2 years may avail the free vaccination in all health units in these districts. Further information, may be collected from the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) & District Programme Officers, RCH & UIP (DPOs) of the respective districts.

A twenty-two-year-old youth died of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) hours after admitted to government owned Siliguri hospital on last Tuesday night, a top medical officer today said.

Karan Paswan, the resident of ward no 1 of Siliguri was admitted to the hospital but expired hours after following AES, state health director Biswaranjan Satpathy today said.

Dr Satpathy, however, claimed that the Japanese encephalitis to a large extent was contained.

Kolkata: A Birbhum resident has died of Japanese encephalitis at a city hospital, West Bengal Heath Department official confirmed on Thursday.
Rafikul Rehman, a resident of Murarai of Birbhum's Rampurhat, died at the Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday, taking the death toll from Japanese encephalitis in the state to 47.
The 47 victims included three from south Bengal and 44 from seven districts in the northern part, West Bengal Health Services Director Biswaranjan Satpathy told PTI on Thursday.

KOLKATA: Encephalitis claimed another life in the state as a 68-year-old man from Birbhum died at NRS Medical College and Hospital on Thursday. Rafiqur Rehman was admitted to the hospital on August 29.

A pathological test done at the School of Tropical Medicine (STM) had confirmed presence of antibodies of Japanese encephalitis in his body.

On the same day Rehman was admitted to NRS Hospital, Mohammad Ahsan Ali (51) of Alipore, who was also suffering from Japanese encephalitis, died at Calcutta Medical Research Institute.

GORAKHPUR: As many as 46 people have died of encephalitis in a week and seven in past 24 hours. BRD Medical College statistics reveal that 991 encephalitis cases have been reported since January this year, among which 291 have died and 184 are undergoing treatment in encephalitis ward of medical college. The mortality rate this year is highest in three years. At present, the rate is 29.36%. In year 2011, only 18% encephalitis patients died, in 2012, the mortality rate was 20.93%, whereas in 2013, 29.33%. The increase in the last three years raises question on the claims made by the government.

smears were prepared and examined for Malaria parasite, all
were negative. Seven serum samples sent to AMCH out of
which 05 were positive for Japanese Encephalitis by ELISA.
A fever survey was done in the area. Fogging activity was
done in the area. Awareness activities were done by
involving local leaders and Panchayat members. Insecticide
treated bed nets were given to the people. The death
occurred in a 51 year old male.

This outbreak was reported in 30th week from PHC
Tamulpur, PHC Mushalpu, PHC Nizkaurbaha, PHC Barama,

were affected. A total of 36 CSF samples were tested at
GMCH Guwahati, out of which 17 tested positive for JE.
District RRT visited the affected area. Fogging done in
affected area. Awareness meeting done in affected areas.
Indoor residual spraying done in all households.

houses as well as cattle sheds. Invovlement of animal
husbandry department for collection of animals samples.
Group discussions were organized to strengthen community
awareness regarding sanitation and personal protection
measures especially in pediatric age group.

Majority of cases were from Ru Bhoi (N=16) , other
districts involved are East & West Khasi,Jaintia, West
Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills. District RRT
investigated the outbreak. Outbreak started since
08/08/14.Active case search done. All cases treated
symptomatically. One death occurred in a 7 year old
female child. Out of 56 serum samples collected and
tested at Pasteur Institute, Shillong 38 samples found
positive for Japanese Encephalitis & 06 samples found
equivocal. Fogging and anti larval control measure
undertaken. Heath education done regarding personal
protection.
