Overall, the number of dengue cases has crossed 800 in Madhya Pradesh. This is worrying the city's residents as well as healthcare officials. This year, the most affected areas of the city are - Kolar road, TT Nagar and Shahpura. Only on Saturday, 11 new patients have been detected, while in past three days, then umber of patients reached 42.The health department officials claim that they have launched special drive to check dengue, but ironically, the special drive in past one month, could not control the situation.

On Saturday, once again taking the situation seriously, district Collector has asked the officials of different departments to take effective measures. Following this, it was decided that around 300 employees of district administration, Health department, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), Fisheries department, Woman and Child Welfare department and School Education would reach door-to-door.

Dengue claims police trainee, hospital staffer in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A Sion hospital employee and a police trainee died of dengue amidst fears of an outbreak in the city. With these deaths, dengue has claimed three lives in just seven days.
...
Deaths, too, have almost doubled in October compared to the previous monsoon months. Pandit Khandu Gofne (23), who died on Sunday, was undergoing police training at the Naigaum headquarters before he got fever last Friday. He was admitted to JJ Hospital on Saturday evening, but his condition had worsened by then. Dean Dr T P Lahane said the CT scan had showed that he suffered bleeding in the brain and only a post-mortem could confirm the cause of death. Gofne had tested positive for dengue.

The 45-year-old Sion hospital employee, too, had suffered intracranial bleeding before her condition became critical. Head of medicine Dr N D Moulick said she was hypertensive. "She tested positive for dengue but her platelets were not very low," she said. Sion hospital has been admitting over 15 fever cases daily of which nearly 50% are dengue. While the total number of dengue deaths is still under BMC's scrutiny, it is likely to touch 10 this year. Officially, there have been only five dengue deaths this year.

SoBo hospitals overflow with dengue patients
By Lata Mishra, Mumbai Mirror | Oct 14, 2014, 12.00 AM IST

400 infected admitted to private facilities in the past month, 487 to govt establishments since January.

On Monday, Mohammad Hanif, a 40-year-old businessman from the city diagnosed with dengue, was driven to four of south Mumbai's best-known hospitals but refused admission in each one. His 32-year-old wife, Sabina, was told the medical facilities were filled to capacity with dengue patients and that Hanif's name would be placed on a waitlist. After having spent 8 hours darting between hospitals, the Hanifs decided that Mohammad would have to receive treatment at home.

Inquiries instituted by this paper revealed that apart from the four institutions at which the Hanifs attempted to gain admission - Noor Hospital in Byculla, Sabu Siddiqi on JJ Marg, Saifee Hospital at Marine Lines and Bhatia Hospital in Tardeo - none of the other large medical facilities in south Mumbai had room for dengue patients. Doctors at Jaslok Hospital on Pedder Road, Breach Candy Hospital on Bhulabai Desai Road and Cumballa Hill Hospital in Tardeo said they were filled up.

"Sayli had tested negative for dengue antibody test like IgM and IgG so it could not be termed as dengue death. If IgG n IgM are negative then NS1 is not specific, hence it is not considered a dengue infection," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), PMC.

PMC defensive as dengue toll touches 10

While the civic body is hell-bent on proving that the 7-yr-old girl from Nagpur chawl did not succumb to the disease, doctors stick to their stand.

The Nagpur chawl, near Yerwada, was rife with suspicion on Friday after a seven-year-old girl succumbed to what is being called the Dengue Shock Syndrome by the doctors who treated her. However, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) seems hell-bent on proving that the death ? the tenth this season ? has got nothing to do with the vector-borne disease.

"The girl, Sayli Robert Gaikwad, was admitted to our hospital for dengue. Her blood tested positive for the disease. Moreover, her clinical symptoms she showed were also of dengue," added a doctor from Inlaks Budhrani Hospital.

At Manipal Group of Hospitals, there have been 340 cases in July, 300 in August and 275 in September. These are, however, cases of suspected dengue. "In 2012, the number of cases shot up to over 400 in these monsoon months, while in 2013, it was in the 250-300 range," said Dr H Sudarshan Ballal, medical director and chairman, medical advisory board, Manipal Hospitals.

At Victoria Hospital, 75% of the beds are occupied by patients suffering from dengue. "It's definitely bad this year. Unexpected and incessant rain triggered the problem, with abundant pools of stagnant water turning into breeding grounds for mosquitoes," said Dr Veeran Gowda, head, department of medicine, Victoria Hospital.

As expected, the BBMP denied this, claiming that only 322 dengue cases were reported in government hospitals in the past 10 months (January to October 15). The figure last year was more than 1,000. "Compared to last year, the cases are fewer this year. The situation is under control," said Dr M Naveen Kumar, project coordinator, BBMP, National Vector-Borne Disease Control Program.

Mumbai reported most dengue deaths in Maharashtra in 2014
Priyanka Vora, Hindustan Times Mumbai, October 17, 2014
First Published: 22:31 IST(17/10/2014) | Last Updated: 22:32 IST(17/10/2014)

Of all districts in Maharashtra, Mumbai has recorded the maximum number of dengue deaths this year, according to the state health department.

Chandrapur has recorded the highest number of dengue cases (636) this year and one confirmed one dengue-related death so far.

While Mumbai has recorded five dengue deaths with 532 cases so far this year.

About 30% of the cases in the state are from Chandrapur and Mumbai. Could you give the actual number of cases & fatalities statewide? It's around 3,893 cases using the figures you have provided ?Both the districts have different breeding sites. In Chandrapur, we have found dengue-spreading mosquitoes breeding in water in coal mines and forests, while

Mumbai witnesses breeding at spots in houses and housing complexes,? said Dr Kanchan Jagtap, from the state health department.

The Chandrapur district has, so far, reported 23 outbreaks. Some acknowledgement of the recent paper which estimated Dengue cases were undercounted by a factor of almost 300:1

?Most of the cases were from 100 villages in the region, in August and September. Plastic bottles and water containers acted as breeding ground in a majority of the cases,? said Dr Shriram Gogulwar, district health officer of Chandrapur. So coal mines and forests are not a big factor?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, however, claim the rise is a result of increased awareness about reporting such cases.

?The trend this year is no different from last year. The number of cases is almost the same,? said Dr Mangala Gomare, chief of epidemiology cell, BMC. Could you provide those numbers for comparison? Could you ask the Doctor if those figures include cases reported in private hospitals?

Last month, the state health department had called for a meeting of district officers to discuss ways in which the spread of the disease can be controlled. What was the outcome of the meeting? What measures were enacted? What effect did they have?

Jagtap said only 10% of the samples tested positive for dengue. ?The number is almost the same, so there is no need to panic,? said Jagtap. I wish people would stop saying this. Name one occasion when panic would be the appropriate and useful response. So if panic is out of the question, what can people do to reduce their risk? What should they do if they are sick? What danger symptoms should the look out for? What is the appropriate response? Oh, and what do the other 90% have?

According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, Maharashtra has the maximum number of dengue cases in the country after Kerala. Current NVBDCP statistics are only up to July 31st and give a total of 1,150 cases and zero fatalities in Maharashtra - obviously well out of date & irrelevant.

The Brihnamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has served notices to 12,673 private properties for maintaining conducive breeding environments within their compounds. The civic authority has collected Rs 19.6 lakh fine from 740 premises till date.
...
This month the cases of dengue have shot up to 532 in civic hospitals and with a majority of the cases from Kurla, Govandi, Byculla, Chinchpokli, and Bandra (E) ward.

Dr Rajan Naringrekar, insecticide officer at the BMC, said, ?The cases have gone up as breeding of Aedes aegypti mosquito (which spreads the dengue virus) is at its peak and residents have to be more careful as breeding spots are found in refrigerator trays, feng shui plants, and money plants which are usually present indoors.?
