A girl from Balasore district, who was undergoing treatment for dengue in SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, died today.
The victim has been identified as Sangeeta Jena (17), a resident of Inchudi village under Khantapara police station limits. The district health administrators here confirmed Jena?s death.
?She was first admitted in the district hospital here after suffering from the fever for four-five days before she was shifted to SCBMCH when her
condition deteriorated on Tuesday. She succumbed today,? said the nodal health officer of Balasore, Dr Anil Shaw. Informing that the victim was suffering from jaundice, he suspected that the dengue and jaundice complications might have led to her death.

PUNE: A whopping 53% of the total samples collected from mainly Pune and some of its adjoining districts in about two months have tested positive for dengue virus ? the highest in the last nine months ? at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) here.

The NIV received 495 samples from August 1 to Sept 19, of which 267 tested positive for dengue. In June, 34%, that is 123 of the 361 samples, tested positive.

"We could identify serotype in 27 of the 99 samples tested in our laboratory. We found that dengue virus 4 (DENV-4) was dominant in July and DENV-4 and DENV-2 were co-dominant in August. We could identify virus types in only four samples in September so far. Hence, no conclusion about dominance of a particular dengue virus serotype can be made," said Cecilia Dayaraj, head of dengue research at NIV.
