Doubts Test's Accuracy To Detect Infection, Fears Wrong Treatment To Negative Cases
The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has urged the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to ban the sale of rapid diagnostic test kits for dengue, which are primarily used by private hospitals and pathology laboratories in the city.
Civic health officials have asked the FDA to review the sensitivity and specificity of the rapid NS-1 dengue antigen test in the diagnosis of the infection and ban such test kits if they do not meet the required standards.

?We have requested the FDA to take stock of the rapid NS-1 dengue antigen test kits. As per our information, most of these kits are not reliable and give false positive reports. A formal letter in this regard will be submitted to the FDA on Thursday ,? said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), PMC.

PUNE: Poor vector surveillance and halfhearted anti-larval work undertaken by district authorities has led to the spurt in dengue cases across Maharashtra, state health officials have found. They have now issued show cause notices to malaria officers of 12 districts, including Pune, for not carrying out weekly surveillance and anti-larval work effectively in their respective jurisdictions.

Entomological surveillance is the gold standard to prevent spread of dengue, which many districts have clearly failed. All the 12 districts with poor vector surveillance have reported the highest number of dengue cases in the state so far this year. Among them, Chandrapur tops the chart with 636 confirmed cases of dengue followed by Beed (160) and Wardha (134). Maharashtra has recorded a total 3,565 dengue cases and 24 deaths so far this year. Pune tops the list for recording the highest - six deaths - in the state. All the six were local residents of Pune city.

Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar has said that the number of people suffering from dengue fever has come down commendably in the State in the last three years. “Though it was prevalent across India the number of cases reported in the State were very less. While 13,000 cases were reported in the State in 2012, it came down to 6,122 in 2013 and a mere 1,400 this year so far,” he said.

Chairing a a review meeting, the Minister appealed to the officials and doctors to involve elected local body representatives in the awareness drives organised by them.

He asked them to sensitise the public on maintaining a hygienic environment, prevent stagnation of water and to boil water before drinking.

11-yr-old girl dies of Dengue in Indore

An 11-year-old girl has died of dengue during treatment at a private hospital here, doctor said today.

The girl, who belonged to Khargone, about 120 kms away from here, was admitted to Noble hospital on November 2 in a serious condition.

MUMBAI: A 26-year-old new mother became the fourth victim of dengue in a week in the city when she passed away at Dalvie Hospital, Pedder Road, on Monday night, even as three resident doctors from KEM Hospital, Parel, were admitted to the hospital with dengue. Incidentally, Nisha Chavan, a Tradeo resident who leaves behind a six-week-old daughter, delivered at KEM Hospital.

KEM Hospital seems to be emerging as the hotbed of the current dengue outbreak with two of last week's four deaths occurring in the hospital last ?resident doctor Shruti Khobragade and 20-year-old Shubham Tiwari, on October 27 and November 2, respectively.

4,000 Mumbaikars hit by dengue in October, admits BMC
Frequent changes in weather have caused an unusual spurt in dengue cases over the last week, leading to patients crowding medical clinics in the city.
MUMBAI: 4.000 Mumbaikars suffered from dengue fever in October alone, admitted BMC officials after two months of repeated denials. Presenting a clearer picture of the dengue sweep across the city, civic officials told reporters on Wednesday that the city had indeed witnessed an increase in the number of suspected dengue cases this year.

Worrying for the BMC, the premier civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel seems to have become a hotspot for the dengue-spreading mosquitoes-five resident doctors who live on its premises have contracted the disease. While Dr Vruj Dhurke is critical in Hinduja Hospital in Mahim, four others are under treatment in KEM Hospital itself.

Dengue cases more than last year, admits BMC

A day after dengue claimed its tenth victim in the city, the civic body has finally admitted to a spike in the number of cases, as compared to last year.

On Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) admitted for the first time that 4,000 suspected dengue cases had been recorded at public and private hospitals in the city in October.

Only a fraction of these have been confirmed by civic officials.

“There is a rise in dengue cases this year. We have already recorded 659 confirmed cases,” said Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner.

However, while admitting that the number of suspected cases could be higher, the civic health department maintained only 213 dengue cases had been confirmed in October. This is 12% higher than October 2013.

A three-year-old girl in Andheri East died of dengue on Thursday afternoon. Manasvi Devrukhkar breathed her last in the private-run Holy Spirit Hospital at 2.55 pm. She was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Doctors at the hospital confirmed that the ailing girl was brought to the casualty ward of the hospital on Wednesday.

In another incident on Thursday, in Pune, 12-year-old Shweta Chaskar succumbed to dengue. Chaskar who had high fever was ill for a week and was being treated at a small nursing home in Nigdi, where she resided.

"She was shifted to Aditya Birla Hospital in Khergaon on Wednesday. She succumbed the next day," said a relative. In Nashik, 42-year-old Jitendra Kulkarni also died of dengue on Thursday.

The toll of dengue deaths in the state is estimated to have reached 27. However, the directorate of health services (DHS) has maintained that an inquiry will be conducted to 'confirm' the three deaths that occurred on Thursday.

A four-month-old girl from Kurla died of dengue on Wednesday, making her the fourth reported dengue casualty this week. On Monday, Samiya Masiulla Shaikh was taken to Sion Hospital with breathing problems. She was incubated and later admitted to KEM Hospital. Within a day, she developed a fever. Doctors then tested her for dengue.

?Her platelet count did not drop, even though that is a common symptom of dengue. When she got fever, we decided to test for the infection,? said Dr Mukesh Agarwal, head of the KEM hospital?s paediatric department.

?It?s an unusual case, as she had no typical signs of dengue infection. Our doctors said she died of cardiorespiratory failure, in a case of dengue fever, on Wednesday,? said Dr Shubhangi Parkar, dean of the hospital.
