Kurnool and neighbouring districts are under the grip of dengue fever, with a steep rise in cases in the last 40 days. More than 60 cases are reported everyday at the paediatric ward of the General Hospital, while around 50 per cent of the cases have been tested positive.

Incidentally, most cases are reported from Adoni, Nandikotkur, Anantapur and Kadapa.

With the paediatric ward not able to handle the heavy rush of patients, rural practitioners are suggesting that they be taken to advanced centres in Kurnool.

Dengue has spread its tentacles in 31 of Madhya Pradesh?s 51 districts this year, with authorities putting the number of dengue patients in the state over 600.

According to the official figures more than six people have died due to dengue this year. However, sources in various districts told HT that the figure of actual dengue patients and causalities could be higher as many cases do not reported.

The districts where the number of dengue patients has swelled this year include Bhopal, Sagar and Narsinghpur besides Chhindwara, Sheopur, Mandla, Indore etc. The capital city alone has reported over 158 cases, highest in the last four years.

India may be grossly under reporting dengue cases. A study published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene on Tuesday has found that in the period 2006-12 there were an average of nearly six million cases annually ? 282 times the annual average of 20,474 cases reported by the Ministry of Health.
According to the joint study by the INCLEN trust, ICMR, the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare and Brandeis University in Massachusetts, ?The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) captures only 0.35 per cent of the clinically diagnosed dengue cases in India?.
The study analysed retrospective data from 10 medical colleges across five regions of the country and the clinically diagnosed cases in public and private hospitals from a single representative district, Madurai, which was extrapolated to the national level. It also used a Delphi panel, a statistical tool comprising a structured group of experts, to arrive at an estimate of the correct number of clinically diagnosed cases.

Abstract

Between 2006 and 2012 India reported an annual average of 20,474 dengue cases. Although dengue has been notifiable since 1996, regional comparisons suggest that reported numbers substantially underrepresent the full impact of the disease. Adjustment for underreporting from a case study in Madurai district and an expert Delphi panel yielded an annual average of 5,778,406 clinically diagnosed dengue cases between 2006 and 2012, or 282 times the reported number per year. The total direct annual medical cost was US$548 million. Ambulatory settings treated 67% of cases representing 18% of costs, whereas 33% of cases were hospitalized, comprising 82% of costs. Eighty percent of expenditures went to private facilities. Including non-medical and indirect costs based on other dengue-endemic countries raises the economic cost to $1.11 billion, or $0.88 per capita. The economic and disease burden of dengue in India is substantially more than captured by officially reported cases, and increased control measures merit serious consideration.

INDORE : Thirty four-year-old man from Mhow died of suspected dengue on Monday thus taking the toll of this season to three. The patient has been identified as Kamlesh Yadav (34) who was undergoing treatment at Choithram Hospital. He was reportedly suffering from dengue since last week.

So far, 28 positive cases of dengue have been reported this year, while out of 7-8 suspected patients are presently admitted in private hospitals.

While this study indicates that the economic and disease burdens of dengue in India are hundreds of times greater than estimates based entirely on official reports, further studies are needed to garner additional detail. Most notably, the incidence estimate relies heavily on data from only one district: Madurai. In addition, the costing estimates were based on only 10 medical college hospitals?although those hospitals were selected from 10 separate states in India, spanning all geographic regions of the country, and included both private and public hospitals.

?This study provides a valuable insight of the dengue disease burden in India. Dengue, in addition to inflicting pain and suffering, also extracts a significant social and economic toll on India,? said Alan Magill, MD, president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, which publishes the journal. ?Health economists, policymakers and researchers can and should work hand-in-hand with tools like this so we can fully appreciate the impact on populations, not just individuals. It?s the smart thing to do and the right thing to do.?

The study was funded through a contract with vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur, which has a dengue vaccine in late-stage clinical development. The company, however, was not involved in the actual research or in preparing the study for publication.

A 48-year-old man admitted at Fortis hospital has become the first confirmed victim of dengue this year, according to municipal authorities. Mahender Singh, a resident of Chawla village in West Delhi who was admitted on September 13 and died the same day of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), tested positive for dengue virus, a report of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation states.
DHF is a complication associated with the virus, where a severe dip in platelet count leads to bleeding and death.
Municipal authorities said anti-mosquito activities, including fumigation and cleaning of drains and checking mosquito-
breeding sites, would be undertaken in areas near the residence of the victim.
Till October 4, 120 cases of the viral disease had been diagnosed by the three municipal corporations. Twenty-two cases were confirmed last week and authorities said the last few weeks have reported a steady hike in cases.
