Flights departing St. John's International Airport on Monday morning were cancelled as Newfoundland braced for volcanic ash drifting westward across the ocean from a volcanic eruption in Iceland.
Air Canada cancelled all flights leaving St. John's until 9 a.m. on Monday morning.

Last night, Canada's top musicians, in the city for the Juno Awards, waited in lines about 100 people long to board the last three flights leaving St. John's, heading to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, before the ash cloud was expected to arrive at 3 a.m. The cloud is expected to affect St. John's, Gander and Deer Lake in Newfoundland.

Teen idol Justin Bieber, in-die band Metric and Canadian icons Barenaked Ladies and Blue Rodeo waited, interspersed with fans in line, as camera crews interviewed rock stars carrying battered guitar cases and passengers sat amid mounds of luggage wearing puzzled expressions.

Angela Mah, a spokewoman for Air Canada, said the early flights were cancelled as a precautionary measure, and the airline will re-evaluate the situation on Monday morning to determine if flights later in the day can leave.

"People that are departing or going to St. John's, Newfoundland, are able to make changes to their reservations without penalty," she said.
Nine flights of 13 flights, including to Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Ottawa and Edmonton, have been cancelled. Continental Airlines also cancelled their flight to Newark, New Jersey.

Just after midnight last night in the airport, a spokesperson came over the loudspeaker to assure passengers that no one would be missing their planes if they had spots. Bill Maher, the American comedian heading to Tampa, decided to depart last night when he learned that his flight Monday morning was cancelled. "If the cloud comes in and hangs around for days, we could be here a week for God's sake," he said.

John Montgomery, a presenter at last night's awards and the Olympic gold medallist in skeleton, waited in line last night hoping to begin making his way back to Comox, B.C. "I'm OK. I'm just trying to get the hell out of Dodge," he said.

The recording artists performed last night at the sold-out 2010 Juno Awards gala in the city. But the star-studded, glamourous night turned more sombre as news of the flight cancellations swept through the press room at the St. John's Convention Centre.

Michael Buble, the crooner who took the biggest honours here, shocked reporters when he cut short a question-and-answer session, saying that his pilot had told him he had to depart Newfoundland immediately or be stuck until Wednesday.

As fears of the volcanic ash spreading over Canada escalated on Sunday, European airlines began to doubt the necessity of a blanket ban on flights in Europe. On Sunday, the chief executive of British Airways took to the skies to test the effect of volcanic ash on aircraft.

The Boeing 747 jumbo jet -- with chief executive Willie Walsh on board -- flew for nearly three hours from London Heathrow Airport out over the Atlantic Ocean before returning to Cardiff.

The conditions were perfect and the aircraft encountered no difficulties. It will now undergo a full technical analysis at BA's engineering base at Cardiff," a spokesman for the airline said.

The chaos caused by the eruption, now entering its fifth day, made Europe a virtual no-fly zone for a fourth straight day on Sunday with nearly seven million passengers caught in a global backlog.

The enormous shroud of fine mineral dust particles now stretches from the Arctic Circle in the north to the French Mediterranean coast in the south, and from Spain into Russia.

Flights will finally start again in the UK Tuesday after air traffic control company Nats lifted restrictions for Scotland and part of northern England.

After days without any flights above the UK due to volcanic ash, Nats said Monday that Scottish airspace would open at 7am tomorrow.

Airspace south to a line between Teesside and Blackpool will also be open, with the hope that restrictions over the rest of England and Wales will be lifted later tomorrow, Nats said.

But current restrictions for the UK would carry on until 7am tomorrow.

Nats said: "The volcanic eruption has reduced and the volcano is not currently emitting ash to altitudes that will affect the UK. Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions, we are now looking at a continuously improving situation.

"This is a dynamic and changing situation and is therefore difficult to forecast beyond 7am tomorrow.

"However, the latest Met Office advice is that the contaminated area will continue to move south, with the possibility that restrictions to airspace above England and Wales, including the London area, may be lifted later tomorrow.

"It is now for airports and airlines to decide how best to utilise this opportunity. Passengers should contact their airlines to find out how this will affect their travel plans."

EU to resume limited air traffic Tuesday


BRUSSELS ? European officials carved up the sky Monday, creating three zones to more quickly break the flight deadlock caused by volcanic ash flowing from Iceland over Europe. Many more flights will be able to take off on Tuesday, the bloc said.

European countries can resume airline traffic in designated "caution zones" where the threat of ash is considered less dangerous, French officials said after a meeting of the bloc's 27 transport ministers.

Under the accord, one area ? defined by the European air traffic control agency Eurocontrol ? will remain entirely off limits to flights. Another area will be open to all flights and a third area will be a caution zone in which some flights will be allowed.

The EU has moved to ease air travel curbs imposed after much of Europe's airspace was shut because of the spread of volcanic ash from Iceland.

Transport ministers said there would be a core no-fly area, an open-skies area and a third limited-service zone.

But the UK later scaled back plans to reopen its airspace as the eruption strengthened, spewing a new ash cloud.

The International Air Transport Association earlier labelled the chaos a mess and an embarrassment for Europe.

The body says its losses have soared over $1bn (?650m; 740m euros), since much of Europe's airspace was closed five days ago because of ash from southern Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano.

'No compromise'

Following talks with the EU's 27 transport ministers by video conference, Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas told reporters in Brussels more planes should start flying from Tuesday.

He added: "There cannot be any compromise on safety. All the decisions must be based on scientific evidence and expert analysis."

British Airways was the latest airline to call the flight bans unnecessary.

However, the UK's air traffic control body, Nats, later warned that the volcanic eruption had renewed, and revised its plans to reopen airports across parts of the UK.

Airspace in Scotland and parts of the north of England was still expected to reopen on Tuesday.

But plans for flights to resume at airports in Northern Ireland and as far south as London look doubtful.

"Since our last statement at 1530 [Monday], the volcano eruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK.

"This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working."

British Airways says it is "reviewing" its plan to resume flights from London airports from 1800 GMT on Tuesday, in the light of the latest reports.

Warships deployed

Experts had earlier said the volcano - which erupted last Wednesday for the second time in a month - was now spewing more steam and less ash.



A US official said on Monday a Nato F-16 fighter jet had suffered engine damage after flying through the volcanic ash cloud.

In the high temperatures of an engine turbine, ash can turn to molten glass and cripple the engine.

Meanwhile, the UK deployed three Royal Navy warships to help pick up stranded passengers from Spain and the Channel ports.

In Spain, where all airports were open, the government offered to let Britain and other European countries use its airports as stopovers to get passengers moving again.

The two main German airlines, Lufthansa and Air Berlin, were granted exemptions from the flight ban to fly home thousands of stranded passengers.

France said it was reopening air corridors for flights between Paris and southern French cities, and eventually all its other airports.

Some passenger flights will be allowed to leave Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam from Monday night, said the Dutch transport minister.

'No timer'

Airspace in Belgium, Italy and Denmark is also due to begin opening from Tuesday morning.

But Finland shut its airports again until Tuesday afternoon.

Airports have already reopened in Austria, Estonia, Hungary and Turkey.

European airlines have asked the EU and national governments for financial compensation for the closure of airspace.

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said the bloc's economy would suffer badly if the disruption continued for a long time.

"What makes me a little bit afraid is that there is no timer on this volcano," he told news agency Reuters.

The shroud of fine mineral dust particles from the volcano has spread from the Arctic Circle in the north to the French Mediterranean coast in the south, and from Spain into Russia.

The Finnish air force has released images showing the effects of volcanic dust ingestion from inside the engines of a Boeing F-18 Hornet fighter, while it prepares to make inspections on several additional aircraft.

Five of the air force?s Hornets were involved in a training exercise on the morning of 15 April, just hours before the imposition of airspace restrictions due to the ash cloud spreading from a major volcanic eruption in Iceland.

One aircraft?s engines have been inspected so far using a boroscope, with melted ash clearly visible on its inside surface. The air force decided to release the images to show the potentially damaging effects of current flight activities, says chief information officer Joni Malkam?ki.

?The images show that short-term flying can cause substantial damage to an aircraft engine,? the air force says. Continued operation could lead to overheating and potentially pose a threat to the aircraft and its pilot, it adds.

Checks will soon be made on the other four aircraft involved, and some engines will be removed to help Finnish company Patria ? which provides in-service support for the nation?s F-18 fleet ? to assess the extent of any damage caused. Its fleet comprises 55 single-seat F-18Cs and seven two-seat trainers, with each powered by two General Electric F404-402 engines.

Finland halted air force training flights yesterday, but the air force will continue to perform operational sorties as required, such as air policing missions and national security tasks.

One of its BAE Systems Hawk jet trainers also flew from Kauhava air base twice yesterday carrying an air sampling pod which collected dust from the atmosphere at various altitudes.

The air force is sharing the gathered information with the Finnish civil aviation authorities, and says it will stage more such flights as requested.

To fly, or not? There's no right answer about when it's safe to fly through a cloud of volcanic ash. But it'll be all too obvious if there's a wrong answer, experts say.

With the volcano in Iceland, Mother Nature is giving high-flying Europe a lesson in risk, aviation technology, scientific uncertainty and economics.

And how these fields intersect is messy.

Experts aren't sure what amount of volcanic ash ? made up of sand and tiny abrasive glasslike particles ? is dangerous to jet engines and what density is safe. And for that matter, they can't say how much of the ash is floating in any one spot along the air traffic routes or where it is specifically going next.

But airlines know what canceled flights can do to their bottom lines. And passengers know when those canceled flights cross the line from inconvenience to pain.

So Monday night, a smattering of flights took off in northern Europe, followed by more flights on Tuesday. European Union transport ministers divided the northern skies into three areas: a "no-fly" zone immediately over the ash cloud; a caution zone "with some contamination" where planes can fly subject to engine checks for damage; and an open-skies zone.

At one point Monday, the volcano's eruptions were said to be weakening, but by Monday night the plume seemed to intensify, and it was unclear how long newly reopened airports in northern Europe would be able to remain operational.

If airports do reopen, passengers may have to decide for themselves what risk is acceptable.

When people turn to science for answers, they get a lot equivocation.

"There are really no facts about risk. It's just how we interpret the information we have," said David Ropeik, an instructor in risk perception at Harvard and author of the book "How Risky Is It, Really?"

"This is a great example of how the pace of modern technological invention is making a lot more people nervous about just how sure science can be about anything," he said.

It is one of the hardest risk decisions society has faced in a while, agrees Paul Fischbeck, a risk analysis expert at Carnegie Mellon University and a former military pilot.

"With the amount of uncertainty, this now I think is a very hard decision," he said. "How much risk are you willing to accept to reduce economic hardship and inconvenience?"

It isn't a small amount of money at stake. It's billions of dollars with millions of stranded passengers, said Fischbeck. But if an airplane goes down, the company would be shut down by lawsuits, he said.

When the Eyjafjallajokull volcano first spewed, the answer was simple.
Authorities usually shut down airspace when there's volcanic ash. It's the precautionary principle of erring on the side of caution, Fischbeck said.

"Standard safety procedure is: Don't go there if you don't know," said Michael Fabian, a professor of mechanical engineering at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz.

But the days went on and the pain for airline companies and passengers increased and then people started questioning: How bad is it? How do you know?


"Hard questions reveal that the science isn't as settled as first presented," said George Gray, an expert on risk at George Washington University and former science adviser at the U.S. Environmental Protection agency.

The real question about how much risk is acceptable is personal based on the benefits we each get, Gray said.

Fischbeck believes authorities should fly more test flights into the plume to see what kind of damage occurs and at what frequency to help them make a more informed decision.

And the International Air Transport Association accused European governments of offering "no risk assessment, no consultation, no coordination, and no leadership," urging a quicker reopening of European skies.

Engineers worry about immediate catastrophic damage when the ash dust congeals in an engine turbine, blocking air flow and shutting it down, Fabian said. In 1989, when a Boeing 747 flew through volcanic ash over Alaska, all four engines failed and the plane dropped more than two miles in five minutes, before engines restarted. Ash can also cause long-term abrasive damage to planes that could lead to later disasters if not dealt with.

Fabian said the reason engineers know so little about the risks from volcanic ash is that it would take many hours and great expense to do repeated tests. And tests would be needed for the 20 different types of engines currently flown.

And even if engineers knew how much ash a plane's engines could handle, atmospheric scientists can't say how much ash is in any one place or predict what will happen next, said Jon Davidson, a professor of earth sciences at Durham University in England. The ash becomes more diluted as it goes higher in altitude but also clumps together at times like sediments in a river, he said.

How long will this disrupting eruption last?

As Europe writhes in agony, millions of people are asking this question, desperately praying for relief from the paralysis of the airline industry caused by an Icelandic volcano.

This eruption is a perfect storm, a combination of wind and ice conditions that has turned an ordinary eruption into a crisis. Last month, the same volcano erupted harmlessly. But last week, magma found a second pathway to the surface, this time beneath a glacier. When hot magma touched ice, it instantly created a burst of steam and produced glassified silicates. The sudden expansion of steam created a colossal explosion that sent billowing clouds of glassified silica ash three to five miles into the air over Europe. The ongoing eruptions of the volcano, which continue unabated, are caused by a series of steam explosions as magma continues to encounter glacial ice.

There are three scenarios for what could come next:

1) The best scenario is that over the next few days either the magma spends itself or the ice finally melts. Without ice, the eruption will become an ordinary one. Scientists have tried to send airplanes to the volcano to analyze how much ice is left, but even these airplanes were grounded by the clouds of ash.

2) The most likely scenario is a repeat of the 1821 eruption by the same volcano. That eruption sputtered off and on for 13 months. If this occurs again, European aviation may have to play cat and mouse for several weeks to months. Planes will only fly when the jet stream is blowing a certain direction or when the volcano is relatively quiet. Under this scenario, pilots will be in constant fear of encountering ash, which can shut down a plane's engines and sand blast its windshields to such an extent that it is impossible to see through them. There have been about 90 airplane encounters with volcanic ash since 1980, and in one instance all four of the plane's engines were shut down, almost causing a tragedy.

3) The worse case scenario, which is unlikely, involves this eruption triggering another, larger eruption. There are 35 active volcanoes in Iceland, and one eruption has been known to set off another. The worse case happened in 1783, with an eruption lasting eight months. That eruption killed off much of the livestock and agriculture in Iceland, which in turn caused the death of about 25% of the island's population.

The eruption also eventually killed tens of thousands of people on the Continent. Benjamin Franklin was in Paris at the time and was one of the first to connect the rapid change in local weather that collapsed European agriculture with a volcanic explosion. 1783 became known as the horrible "year without summer." Europe plunged into a period of poverty that lasted for years. Some historians believe that this may have contributed to the French Revolution of 1789.

Unfortunately, our institutional memory lasts a few decades at most, while the cycles of mother Earth are usually measured in centuries or millennia. So for the future we have to appreciate that we humans will be pushed around like pawns as the earth slowly but inexorably changes and shifts.

We may think of volcanoes now as villains. But they are also givers of life.

Much of the air we breathe and the ground we walk on can be traced back to ancient volcanic eruptions. And the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago (which paved the way for the coming of humans) might be traced back to a one-two punch caused by an asteroid collision and simultaneous volcanic eruptions.

The fact that humans are about 99.9% genetically identical could, according to one theory, be traced back to the Toba eruption in Indonesia roughly 70,000 years ago. That eruption might have killed off most of the human race, leaving only a few hundred of us to populate the planet. We might, therefore, owe our evolution and very existence to volcanoes.

”So as bad as Eyafjallajokull is, Katla could be much, much worse.” Miller says Katla has been more active than others in the region.
Eyjafjallajokull has erupted only three times in the past 1,000 years, while Katla has erupted at least 20 times since then. But Katla seems to erupt whenever Eyjafjallajokull does. Three times in history when Eyjafjallajokull has erupted – in 920, 1612 and 1821 – Katla has, too.


That’s why the current eruption could be a bad omen: Every time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted – as it has for the past week – Katla follows behind, always erupting within the same year, sometimes just a few months after its little sister.


“We don’t know when because volcanoes in that part of the world are very difficult to predict,” he notes, adding that Katla is located about 10 to 12 miles from Eyjafjallajokull but is not part of the same volcano system.


“We do know that Katla has been a much more active volcano. Its last significant eruption came in 1918,” he notes. “An eruption from nearby Grimsvotn volcano in 1783 occurred and so much volcanic haze and ash covered Europe and Asia that it had a dramatic cooling effect. Ben Franklin, who was ambassador to France at the time, called it ‘the year without a winter’ and he later wrote a paper about volcanoes affecting climate called ‘Meteorological Imaginations and Conjectures’ and presented it at a conference the following year.


“History tells us that we need to watch Mount Katla very closely,” Miller adds.

Volcanic ash could cause flu vaccine delays

Disrupted air traffic in Europe due to the Iceland volcanic eruption could possibly delay seasonal flu vaccine supplies to New Zealand over the next few weeks.

The Ministry of Health says the bulk of vaccine doses are distributed from France, where flights have been grounded over the past five days.

New Zealand has so far delivered around 772,000 doses of flu vaccine - more than in the entire 2008 flu season and around 100,000 more than at the same time last year.

The ministry says it is reviewing the situation, and working with primary care providers to ensure they are kept to date.

Iceland president warns of second volcano threat

The president of Iceland yesterday warned that a second "much bigger" volcano is set to erupt and could spark further chaos.


President Olafur Grimsson fears if the second volcano, Katla, blows, it could have devastating consequences worldwide.

Katla is east of the smaller Eyjafjallajokull volcano which sparked the ash cloud and in the past has triggered subsequent eruptions from the Katla volcano.


Mr Grimsson added: "We have emergency plans in our own country, so I think that it's high time for European governments and airline authorities to start planning."

The maps above show how flights have been restricted to flying around the ash cloud, shown in red. Where the shading is darkest, it indicates the cloud is extending higher into the atmosphere.
The flight ban was partially lifted on Tuesday - five days after the eruption. EU transport ministers agreed to allow limited flights within Europe after flight tests showed the density of the volcanic ash in the air was diminishing.

The map above, <!-- S ILIN -->provided by the Met Office <!-- E ILIN -->shows how the ash cloud is forecast to alter its position in the next 24 hours.
Scientists and engineers have agreed a new safe threshold - a concentration of ash of 0.002g per cubic metre of air. At or below this concentration, there is no damage to the engine.
