It's not crazy, Gert. I was talking to one of the young movers who were here this morning, and he said he thought the news was some sort of hoax at first, too. The only thing strange to me is how did he avoid infection for so long and then get it now? Is the virus getting more transmissible? Just more widespread? Greater contacts from campaigning?

Use anything of mine as you like - just make it clear I am no academic or expert and everything I write is based on my understanding of what I have picked up and should be fact checked like everything else on the internet. Like you I am learning all the time and these conversation help. North American deer mice (studied because they are host species for Hanta virus) are a potential reverse-zoonosis reservoir spices like the mink. Thanks for the links I will have a look when I have time.

The paper being discussed https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.09.15.20188896v1.full.pdf looks at the accumulation of relatively broad acting low avidity T-Cell accumulation with age. The mechanism by which B cells produce antibodies (and a very similar mechanism in T-cells although they do not release their antibody equivalent protein but retain it trans-membrane) is one of the great marvels of evolutionary biology and a fascinating study in its own right.

The addition of dexamethasone is interesting. As I understand it this is best reserved for patients receiving oxygen or other respiratory assistance, the concern being that the anti-inflammatory effects need to outweigh the potential suppression of the immune response. I have no idea. I am sure that there is some organized messaging going on. However, the President is rumored to be a work nut. i.e. his hobby is working. I think a way to take his mind off what is going on is to probably do his usual - which is working on something. I think we learn more about his condition from what medicine he is taking.
 
Trump rode in a car to wave to people outside the hospital. It appears he had on a cloth mask and the only secret service agent I could see inside had on a visor, N95, and a torn gown. I do not think this was a smart idea. link
 
COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222 clinical trial resumed in Japan, follows restart of trials in the UK, Brazil, South Africa and India

The Phase I/II clinical trial for the COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222 has resumed in Japan after discussion with the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA).

A standard review process triggered a voluntary pause to vaccination across all global trials on 6 September to allow review of safety data by an independent committee. Their recommendations have been supported by international regulators in the UK, Brazil, South Africa, India and now in Japan, who have deemed that the trials are safe to resume.

AstraZeneca continues to work with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to facilitate review of the information needed to make a decision regarding resumption of the US trial. The safety of trial participants is of paramount importance and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct in clinical trials.

Steroids such as dexamethasone cause hyperactivity. Just saying.

I was on a course of dexamethasone intermittently a few years ago and my experience was that it did give me hyperactivity, increased appetite, and trouble sleeping. I was hyperactive from about 1 hour after dosage until the next morning. It did not affect my ability to reason but I did not receive a daily dose for a week straight.
 
The tweet below is unfortunate. Every President receives the kind of medical care not available to anyone else on the planet.

Yes... Live your life - but be careful where COVID-19 is concerned. It can kill or wound you. Take all the usual precautions. You know what to do.

I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!
