Thank you very much gsgs, this article is the mostinformative one about that disease.

Because of the translation, it is not clear if this is a whole new pathogen associated with this list of all the others main and known major swines pathogens or if this is a perticular mix of thoses pathogen that cause a distinct syndrome.

PCV2 ( porcine circovirus ) is almost undestroyable by disifectant as stated in those articles, replicate unnoticed for years and is immunosupressant.
His associated syndromes are almost always provoqued by secondary pathogens. In North america the PMWS syndrome is the mostly spread and is a high CFR around 20% but there is some of the associated pathogen listed in that article that are not present in north america.

Like I said before, in the lab where i work, a triple positive set like
PRRSV+ SIV+ MH+ is not rare in thoses swine with high PCV2 viral load...

For an example, the PDNS syndrome is almost only seen in europe where differents pathogen sets are presents.
There can be a special mix of pathogens there in china that explain why the PCV2 associated syndrome are more deadly.

The PCV2 virus behave very much like AIDS in human at the exception that it is secreted in all the body's fluid and is transmitted by all ways.
This pan-epizooty is a huge problem and I think is the natural consequence of industrial breading.

I hope this is not a new pathogen, because the spread of it could be the last fatal hits on the swine industry wich is already on the edge.

But, because PCV2 is immunosupressive, I do not exclude it can be associated with some form of avian flu...
My only problem with the H5N1 explication, is that is should have been easy to the chinese to identify it and I do not beleive it could have spread for years without causing a huge flow of human cases since swine addapted virus are much more close to human adaptation that avian one.

My very personnal hypothesis goes for a new PCV2 associated syndrome but it do not exclude a whole new and yet unidentified swine virus.

I base this interpretation solely on my personnal experience on a vet-diagnosis-lab here in North-America. Our main samples flow are from the swine industry.

Note, that they were calling for strict measures, which I guess
is not so common in China and maybe an indication that
human cases already happened.
Also, could they still eat the meat when it's PCV2/PMWS ?

The list of pathogens in the article seems to be a list of
"secondary" infections. They haven't found the cause of the disease yet,
but it seems that these secondary infections are frequent in the
PHF-cases.

PCV2 viral load rise is tought to be caused by the immune response to a secondary pathogen.
Here in Canada, the H3N2 epidemic haved been followed by a severe wave of PMWS problems... now... no study haved proven the causal link of that sequencial history.

PCV2 in istelf have no epizootic potential ever recorded for human.
It is a DNA virus very very small, with only two gene ( but I must check for this last ...) in a circular coil protect by a hard protein and not envelopped.

It is hardly destoyed even by heat and we (in our lab) ever found it in animal-made-floor. Theses animal floor haved been banned for most of cattle animal because of the MadCow disease problem but are permitted for swine because this species is not known to be sensible to this kind of disease.
But who know what is the main infection path because they are found in lungs, serum, feces, urine, nose, and everywhere.

I'm not sure but I think the meat can and is sended to the market...80% of north american swine are PCV2 positive, it's like AIDS in some african
country. It may depend on the secondary infection... Strep suis have some epizootic potential.

It's funny to note that this list is also the list of all the serious disease a pigs can catch... and all theses disease can kill of their own.

I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere yet, but I assume
there will be quite some discussion in China about this
in the next months.

Information received on 14 Sep 2006 from Mr Jia Youling, Director General, Veterinary Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture, Beijing:Report date: 12 Sep 2006.Since the end of June 2006, pigs have died of a disease characterized by rising body temperature, redness of the skin and rapid breathing in some parts of 6 provinces of China, namely Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Hubei. Immediately after the occurrence of the disease, the Ministry of Agriculture took appropriate prevention and control measures, and the unnatural deaths of pigs have come to a stop.
By epidemiological investigation and laboratory testing of 582 samples of pathogenic material, we have discovered that this disease is closely related to the mixed infection of classical swine fever, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome and porcine circovirus.
Of all the pathogenic samples, 263 samples (i.e. 45 percent) were positive for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS); 167 samples (i.e. 29.2 percent) were positive for classical swine fever (CSF); 130 samples (i.e. 22.3 percent) were positive for porcine circovirus (PCV-2); 17 samples were positive for Aujeszky's disease; 6 samples were positive for _Streptococcus suis_; one sample was positive for pasteurellosis infection, and 47 samples were positive for porcine contagious pleuropneumonia infection.

Samples that tested positive for PRRS, CFS, or PCV-2 account for 96.5 percent of the total of the samples tested.

We also tested 80 samples from sick pigs for African swine fever with polymerase chain reaction as recommended by the Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals. All of the results were negative, and the possibility of African swine fever can therefore be ruled out.

A similar swine disease was also found in some southern provinces of China in hot summers during the last few years. It was also called swine high fever disease in some places.

Several features concerning the occurrence of the disease have been identified. Firstly, it is very seasonal. It is found mainly from June to September. Secondly, it only affects certain areas along the Yangtze River, mainly in the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Jangxi, Anhui and Jiagsu. The morbidity and mortality rate of the disease have not shown a sudden or unexpected increase so far. We are currently arranging for a microbiologist to conduct further research. If there is any new detection of the disease, it will be notified to the OIE immediately.

[We will continue to refer to this disease as "undiagnosed" rather than "high fever" disease until a more definitive diagnosis is established, either as a syndrome resulting from mixed infections with particular agents or when a definite single agent is identified. Such questions of causality are not uncommon when a new disease occurs; PRRS was originally referred to as "mystery disease." There are many instances in the annals of infectious disease when a new disease gets tagged with a temporary name until the cause is more definitively ascertained. A couple of questions, at least, remain. First, it would be interesting to find out whether sick swine were tested for influenza, H1N1, H1N2, or H3N2, which circulate in Asia, and also for H5N1 to increase active surveillance for influenza. Secondly, none of the 3 agents, PRRS, CSF or PCV2, are known for having marked seasonal distributions, yet a summer distribution seems to be one of the most prominent features of the outbreaks described by this report. It's of interest to note that theses tree pathogens are suspected to been associated with that circovirus asociated syndrome PRRS, CFS, or PCV-2(circovirus itself).

CFS is not present in Canada it haved been eradicated since around 20 years.

So it is credible that a new circovirus associated syndrome could be present where CFS is present.

but that quote "130 samples (i.e. 22.3 percent) were positive for porcine circovirus (PCV-2)" is poorly credible since this virus is oftenly found in very small amound almost everywhere. If they have problem in china with pcv2 associated syndrom the positive rate for the virus should be fair more high.
( Note : PCV2 is very hard to obtain by culture and the PCR the mostly seen in literature is very not sensible. )
The only way to be sure is by a goo sensible real-time RT-PCR with fluorogenic probe able to quantify but I strongly doubt that this could be developped in china.

That said, I think the presence of a wave of PCV2 proble in china reduce the possibility that H5N1 infection in pigs could gone unnoticed and without symptoms. In this way, it can be seen as a good news...
Swine influenza virus can and could been associated with a wave of PCV2 with high CFR.

If you have time, maybe you can go read the previous posts about circovirus associated syndrome.

The circovirus is a immunosupressive virus that behave like AIDS and rarely kill the pigs by itself but by a serie of different "syndrome" that are caused or provoqued by secondary pathogens.
But it's more complicated than that because some time also, the secondary pathogens are gone and the circovirus take this momentum to raise in viral load and kill the beast.

Although very few hogs were released into markets in the south due to the epidemic situation there, integrated hog farms continued to make consecutive deliveries to Guangdong. Significantly more hogs were released into local markets in northern China.

Meanwhile, the worsening epidemic situation in the north of late has weighed on hog prices nationwide. Hence, the relatively high hog prices in the south failed to bolster prices in the north, and even moved lower recently.

Proliferative and necrotizing pneumonia (PNP) is a severe form of interstitial pneumonia characterised by hypertrophy and proliferation of pneumocytes type 2 and presence of necrotic cells within alveoli lumen. Many viral agents have been linked to PNP aetiology, with especial emphasis on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). To gain knowledge on PNP causality, a retrospective study on 74 PNP cases from postweaning pigs from Spain was carried out. Coupled with histopathological examinations, the presence of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) by in situ hybridization (ISH), and PRRSV, swine influenza virus (SIV) and Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) by immunohistochemical (IHC) methods, were investigated. PCV2 was the most prevalent viral agent in PNP cases (85.1%) followed by PRRSV (44.6%); 39.1% of PNP cases showed PCV2 as the solely detected agent, while only 4.1% had PRRSV as the unique pathogen. SIV and ADV were very sporadically detected in PNP cases, and always in co-infection with PCV2. Therefore, present data indicate that PCV2 is the most important aetiological agent in PNP cases from Spain and that PRRSV is not essential for the development of PNP. Taking into account the presented results and available literature, we suggest that PCV2 is possibly the main contributor to PNP cases in Europe while PRRSV could play a similar role in North America.
