Chile reaches 2,139 infections by coronavirus and totals 7 dead
Chile decreed this Sunday the quarantine of the population in the cities of Osorno, some 920 kilometers south of the capital, and Chill?n, some 400 kilometers also south

LIVE CORONAVIRUSES | Santiago de Chile [EFE]. The Chilean authorities reported this Sunday of a new death from COVID-19, the seventh, and 230 new positive cases of contagion by coronavirus, totaling 2,139 throughout the country, where two new cities have been ordered into quarantine.

The new balance delivered by the Undersecretary of Health, Paula Daza, follows the same evolution of the last days in the southern country, which registered the first case of coronavirus on March 3.

The new death occurred in the southern region of La Araucan?a, about 700 kilometers south of Santiago de Chile, and it corresponded to a person with cancer who was undergoing chemotherapy and who received "palliative and compassionate care."

To date, Chile has registered 75 patients recovered from COVID-19 and maintains 105 people hospitalized, of whom 75 are undergoing mechanical ventilation and 11 of these patients "are under critical care."..

COVID-19 cases touch 2,500 in Chile and the eighth death is recorded

The Chilean health authorities reported on Monday that in the last 24 hours there were 310 new infections of coronavirus, bringing the total number to 2,449 cases, and confirmed the death of an eighth person.

The Undersecretary of Health, Paula Daza, explained in a press conference that 128 of the new cases were registered in Santiago, where seven communes (neighborhoods) and 1.3 million people have been in mandatory quarantine since last week for accumulating the majority of the contagions of the country.

Chile, which registered the first case of the new coronavirus on March 3, currently has 122 people admitted to intensive care, 82 of whom are connected to a mechanical ventilator and 14 are "in critical condition," said the official.

The eighth person who died is a 44-year-old woman from the Maule region, 270 kilometers south of the capital, "in a street situation that arrived seriously at the Curic? Hospital," added Daza.

The Chilean Government has so far ruled out decreeing the mandatory quarantine throughout the territory, as other neighboring countries have done with fewer cases such as Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, which have already spent several days with the population confined to their homes.

The Executive's strategy goes through a "progressive quarantine" and to date the confinement of the eastern part of the capital and of cities such as Osorno, Puerto Williams, Chill?n, San Pedro de la Paz or Caleta Tortel has been decreed, although in this last place the confinement was already lifted.

"Just as we evaluate the communes that are in quarantine today, we are looking in all regions of the country, in each of the communes, if it is necessary to implement stricter measures," said Daza.

The southern country is under a state of emergency due to a catastrophe, with a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day, with classes suspended until May and with borders, shopping centers, cinemas, restaurants and shops that are not of primary necessity closed.

Experts hope that the peak of contagion will occur between the end of April and the beginning of May, which has forced the postponement of the historic constitutional plebiscite that was scheduled for April 26 and which was called to calm serious social protests against inequality. that exploded last October.

“What they are doing for all of us is heroic, it will be remembered. All Health workers deserve our recognition and appreciation, ”said Ma?alich, after which he invited Chileans to participate in a collective applause this Tuesday night at 21:00 local time.
Some quarantines will be lifted after Easter

Chile is under a state of emergency due to catastrophe, with a national curfew from 10:00 p.m. local time until 5:00 a.m. local time the following day, with classes suspended until May and with borders, shopping centers, closed cinemas, restaurants and shops.

The President of Chile, Sebasti?n Pi?era, reported this Sunday that in the last 24 hours, 286 new cases of COVID-19 were registered, bringing the total number up to 7,213, and he recognized the difficulties in buying mechanical respirators given the "world war "for these articles.

"Our plan is to reach 3,315 mechanical fans, it is not easy. There is a real war in the world over mechanical fans," said the conservative president.

In Chile, there are currently 387 people admitted to intensive care units, 318 of whom need artificial respiration, although the governor assured that 553 mechanical ventilators are still available "wherever they are required."

"The coronavirus is a powerful, cruel enemy that does not respect anyone, especially the riskiest patients," Pi?era said after opening a hospital on the outskirts of the capital, where he added that the country has gone from 38,000 to 43,000 beds in the last months.

Since the first case was detected in the South American country on March 3, 2,059 patients have already been recovered, the president announced. The death toll rose to 80 people this Sunday.

Chile, where the peak of infections is expected to occur between the end of April and the beginning of May, is under the state of exception due to a catastrophe, with a curfew from 22.00, with classes suspended until May and with the borders and shops that are not basic necessities closed.

The Chilean Government has ruled out decreeing the mandatory quarantine throughout the territory, as neighbors with fewer cases such as Argentina, Colombia and Peru have done, and is leaning towards a "progressive and specific quarantine", which means that it is confining or releasing different cities and neighborhoods based on the number of infections per square kilometer, among other reasons.

To date, quarantine has been maintained in six communes of Santiago, in addition to other areas of the country such as Chill?n, Osorno, San Pedro de la Paz or Temuco, measures that affect almost two million people out of a total population of 18. EFE

Coronavirus: Chile rises to 92 deaths from pandemic

12:23 | Santiago, Apr. 14.
Chile recorded 10 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours, amounting to a total of 92, and the health authorities on Tuesday decreed the mandatory quarantine in three more cities, so there will be 11 towns confined in the southern country.

The death toll is the highest since the pandemic hit the country on March 3, six weeks ago today. Those infected by coronavirus added 392 new cases during the last day, bringing the total figure to 7,917.

Of these, 5,179 remain active; while 2,646 patients have recovered to date, 33% of those infected. The Minister of Health, Jaime Ma?alich, celebrated this Tuesday the "tendency to decrease" of new infections, whose increase has stabilized between 5% and 10% daily.

"It is a favorable trend when compared to weeks ago, when we had increases of up to 50%," said Ma?alich in his daily press conference.

Total quarantine in three other cities

The authorities announced that starting next Thursday at 10:00 p.m. the communities of El Bosque and a part of San Bernardo, south of Santiago de Chile, will be under compulsory quarantine. The urban radius of Arica, in the extreme north of the country, is also added to the list of confined cities.

On the other hand, the quarantine will be lifted in the towns of San Pedro de la Paz, Hualp?n, Padre las Casas and Nueva Imperial, in the center of the country, and in the Las Condes neighborhood, east of the Chilean capital. The rest of the confined municipalities will remain under quarantine for at least one more week: Punta Arenas, Osorno, Temuco, Chill?n Viejo and part of Puente Alto, ?u?oa and Santiago center, in the Metropolitan region.

After the incorporations and the losses announced this Tuesday, the mandatory quarantine will be in force in 11 Chilean cities, where its neighbors must obtain special permits to leave home.

To date, the Chilean government has defended its "strategic quarantine" policy, which involves declaring confinement selectively in some neighborhoods or cities based on the new infections per square kilometer and the characteristics of each locality.
