Chile expands the confinement in Santiago before the “worrying” advance of the coronavirus

Santiago de Chile, May 6 (EFE) .- The Chilean health authorities announced this Wednesday that a dozen communes (neighborhoods) in Santiago will return to confinement before the "worrying" advance of the pandemic in the capital, where the 85 is concentrated % of new infections.

"We have to look at the metropolitan region very carefully (...) The disease is being transmitted to higher-risk communities due to its concentration, its economic power and the type of housing," said Chilean Health Minister Jaime Ma?alich.

Among the communes that will enter quarantine as of Friday and that add to the fortnight that already are, are some of the outskirts such as La Florida, Cerro Navia or Renca, while the wealthiest areas in the east, where the First cases in early March, remain without movement restrictions.

"We have a heterogeneous situation in the country and now it is time to fight for Santiago, move forward together, with enormous effort," said the minister.

Unlike other countries in the region with fewer cases such as Argentina or Colombia, the Government of Chile rejected from the beginning to decree national confinement and to completely close the economy and opted for "selective and strategic quarantines", with restrictions that are imposed and they raise in each commune or city according to the new infections.

The country itself is under a state of emergency, with a curfew starting at 22:00 local time, with schools, universities and borders closed, as well as most non-necessity shops.

The new cases had stabilized around 500 a day and the authorities were already talking about exceeding the peak of contagion and returning to normal, but since the middle of last week they experienced a significant increase and this Wednesday they exceeded one thousand again. .

In the last 24 hours, 1,032 new cases of coronavirus were registered, increasing the total number of infected to 23,048, and six new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 281.

"We still have 636 fans available and in the next few days 72 more respirators will arrive," said the minister, who also announced a "sanitary cord" or road blockade between the capital and the coastal cities of Valpara?so and Vi?a del Mar to prevent expansion. of the pandemic.

Ma?alich also referred to the controversial "Carnet Covid", which is expected to be delivered in the coming days to people who have overcome the disease and are immune so that they are not obliged to abide by movement restrictions in their communes, although he ruled out their delivery " for the moment ”in Santiago due to the high number of cases.

Chile recorded its daily record of coronavirus cases
Within 24 hours, 1,533 people were diagnosed with the disease, of whom 190 were asymptomatic. The infections are in total more than 24 thousand and the dead 285.

The Chilean health authorities reported this Thursday that in the last 24 hours the greatest increase in coronavirus infections was recorded, 1,533, bringing the total number of cases to 24,581.

Since the beginning of May, the number of new cases has grown to more than a thousand per day, forcing the Government to put a stop to the de-escalation of the quarantine.

The Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza, affirmed this Thursday that the peak of cases will be during this month of May.

"Because of the curve that we carry and the data that we have, and because of the monitoring that we are seeing, we continue to suggest that the peak will be during this period in May. This is what we forecast," said Daza.

Meanwhile, authorities reported four new deaths from COVID-19, the lowest number in the past three weeks, bringing the total number of deaths to 285.

The patients who were able to recover to date are 11,664 and the active cases that can transmit the disease are 12,632.

There are 493 people hospitalized in intensive care units, of whom 391 are connected to mechanical ventilation, and 79 of them are in critical condition.

Santiago. [EFE]. The authorities of the Chilean Ministry of Health reported this Thursday that in the last 24 hours they recorded the death of 22 people from coronavirus, the highest number of deaths related to the disease since its inception in Chile on March 3.

In the last 24 hours, 2,659 new cases were recorded, 2,301 of them corresponding to people with symptoms and the remaining 258 asymptomatic, which brought the number of total infections to 37,040.

The metropolitan region continues to be the main focus, with more than 84% of new cases coming from the country's capital area.

Of the 22 deceased, 18 corresponded to the Metropolitan region, which by tomorrow will have 38 communes (neighborhoods) in the capital in quarantine.

According to Johns Hopkins University figures, with 37,040 cases, Chile is the fourth country in Latin America with the highest number of infections.

Since the beginning of May, the country registers more than 1,000 new cases daily, which is putting the country's health system in check.

There are currently 663 patients in intensive care units, of which 555 are connected to mechanical ventilators and 114 of them are in critical condition.

The Undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Z??iga, reported that there are 515 mechanical fans available of the 1,200 that were originally available.

Chile registers for the second consecutive day a record of deaths from COVID-19
Friday, May 15, 2020 10:28

Santiago de Chile - The authorities of the Chilean Ministry of Health reported this Friday that in the last 24 hours there were 26 deaths, which constitutes a new record in deaths in the country for the second consecutive day, bringing the total number of deaths to 394 .

Regarding the number of infected, the ministry estimated at 2,502 new cases, which went on to increase the total number, which now stands at 39,542 people, with 16,614 of them recovered.

Another unpublished data was the number of PCR tests that were taken in the last day, which reached 16,095 samples with a positivity rate of 16%.

According to figures provided by the Undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Z??iga, there are 711 patients in intensive care units, 584 of them connected to mechanical ventilation and of these, 124 are in critical condition.

The available fans will be reduced to 419, although throughout this day 218 more will be received.

TRANSFERS OF PATIENTS TO LOWER HOSPITAL OCCUPATION

Z??iga also reported that the percentage of critical bed occupancy is 80% nationally and 90% in the Metropolitan region, where Santiago de Chile is located.

Faced with this situation, the undersecretary indicated that patient transfers have been carried out to reduce employment in this region in order to anticipate "a potential higher admission per hospitalized patient" that could occur "in the coming days or during the next week due to the increased contagion. "

Thus, he indicated that already this Thursday, transfers were made to the Biob?o region, where there is a significant number of beds available to serve coronavirus patients.

PRESS ATTENTION CALL

For his part, the Minister of Health, Jaime Ma?alich, called on the press for "collaboration" and "to have a lot of responsibility for the information" because, he said, "the most false information, the terrorizing information, which are copied over and over again with a certain degree of naivete by serious means, they do much harm. "

In this way, the Secretary of State referred to some recent controversies that have been echoed in the press, such as the creation of quotas in cemeteries due to the increase in deaths due to coronavirus, which was denied by the authorities as to the existence of an order to expand the number of graves.

"It makes sense to report the truth ... it is not justified to use lies and use terror when what is said is false," said Ma?alich.

However, it should be noted that Raschid Saud, the director of the General Cemetery, the largest in Chile and located in Santiago, told Efe that work is being done on the construction of 1,000 additional graves in the event of a possible "higher requirement" in the coming weeks. due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We don't want something similar to happen to other countries, like Ecuador, Brazil or the United States, where there was simply no place to bury people. That's why we started preparing about two months ago," Saud said.

QUARANTINE IN THE "GRAN SANTIAGO"

This Friday at 22:00 local time (02:00 GMT on Saturday) 32 communes (neighborhoods) in the province of Santiago will quarantine plus 6 communes adjacent to that province, in addition to the northern cities of Iquique and Alto Hospicio.

This means that nearly 8 million inhabitants will be in quarantine, almost two and a half months after the arrival of the pandemic in Chile, which has opted at all times for partial and dynamic quarantines, never - for the moment - at the national level.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Chile ranks as the fourth Latin American country with the highest number of cases of COVID-19, being surpassed by Brazil, Peru and Mexico.

The figure exceeded the number of deaths reported on Saturday, which reached 27 deaths, while the new infections again exceeded 2,300 cases, as well as the last three days, which led the government to order a total quarantine in the capital. Chilean until next Friday.

Z??iga explained that there were 2,353 new cases, of which 2,024 presented symptoms and 329 were asymptomatic, which means a total of 43,781 infected.

05/19/2020 coronavirus
Chile reaches a record number of 31 deaths and 3,520 infections in the same day

The new deaths correspond mainly to older adults, who already had "base diseases" and were concentrated in the Metropolitan Region. In this way, the infections since the start of the pandemic reach 49,579 and the deceased 509.

Chile reported a total of 31 deaths and 3,520 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, daily record figures for the country, after the government reinstated a total quarantine in the capital on Friday due to the increase in infections and deaths in recent days.

"We regret the death of 31 people in the last 24 hours," Health Minister Jaime Ma?alich reported at a press conference at the Palacio de La Moneda, the government house of the trans-Andean country.

The official highlighted that the new deaths correspond mainly to older adults, who already had "base diseases" and were concentrated in the Metropolitan Region.
With the 31 new deaths, Chile exceeded its highest number of daily deaths from Covid-19 and in total accumulates 509 deaths and 49,579 infected

Before the balance presented today, the highest number of daily infections had been 2,660 on Wednesday, May 13, the same day that the government re-imposed total quarantine in the Chilean capital.

Hospital capacity

Minister Ma?alich noted that just under half of the already confirmed cases recovered, for the first time daily hospitalizations exceeded 4,000 and that 876 people are currently in intensive care.

The Chilean government reported yesterday that hospital occupancy in the entire country amounts to 81% and scales up to 93% in the Metropolitan Region, which means that in the main focus of the territory there are almost no more beds available.

In addition, the minister clarified that there are 455 mechanical ventilators available and close to the 400,000 tests carried out on coronaviruses. "We went from an average of 3,000 daily exams, and to this day, we have 13,000 to 16,000 daily exams," he explained.

Ma?alich also referred to the decree that requires private clinics to double the capacity of beds.
"During the last six weeks, capacity has been increased in the public sector, while in private clinics it has only grown by 10% and that is why, given the health alert that allows the health network to be conceived as one, We have instructed and published this ordinance that requires private clinics to improve their capacity, "he assured.

The decree issued by the Ministry of Health aims to increase recovery units, surgical wards, use of respirators that are in reserve, conversion of anesthesia machines and even the use of personnel as anesthetists, ward aides, in the implementation of units and intensive treatment.
"We are going to inspect it daily so that it is complied with," said Ma?alich.

He also reported that they already have 11,000 volunteers registered in the civil platform "I serve my country", which recruits health personnel and allows them to distribute human resources where they are most needed at any given time.

The minister announced that he has already discussed it with President Sebasti?n Pi?era and will announce tomorrow whether new communes (neighborhoods) in the country will be "incorporated into the quarantine measure."
Likewise, he stated that, since next Thursday is a national holiday in Chile "we will establish, from this Wednesday at 6 pm, sanitary cords to Greater Santiago, Greater Concepci?n, Temuco, in La Araucan?a, so that people who are in those cities avoid moving and eventually infect other people, "the minister reported.

Chile exceeds 50,000 coronavirus cases and more than 500 dead
18:30 | Lima, May. twenty.

After a week with daily records, Chile passed a milestone by adding 35 deaths and 4,038 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours to bring the number of infected persons to 53,617 and the number of deaths since March to 544, the Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday.

In Santiago, the capital of seven million inhabitants which is the main focus of the pandemic in the country, between 94% and 95% of the units with critically ill beds are occupied, and yet another "very important "of hospitalized, authorities said.

The Health Minister, Jaime Ma?alich, indicated that the total quarantine in Greater Santiago will be renewed for one more week, so that for the moment the isolation measures will last at least until Friday, May 29.

They also view with concern the increase in cases and hospital occupation in the Valpara?so region, particularly in the port of San Antonio, 120 km west of Santiago, a destination for cruises and commercial import and export operations.

"The greatest number of new cases that we have had in recent weeks refer to the Metropolitan Region, more than 85% of these cases continue to correspond to the Metropolitan Region," said Paula Daza, Undersecretary of Public Health.

The gloomy balances have coincided with a drop in temperatures before the start of the southern winter, with between 9 and 13 degrees Celsius in Santiago, and a climate of social tension in the most poverty-stricken area of the city.

Quarantined

In the rest of the country, some communes in the Antofagasta mining region and Iquique, in the north, are kept in quarantine.

South of Chile decreed total isolation since Friday for the city of Lonquimay, in the Araucan?a Region, "where there is a large concentration of indigenous peoples and the area is very far from hospital centers," said the minister.

Until April 30, the country showed encouraging figures, but experts warned that it was still too premature to claim victory, especially considering that contagions had begun to spread in the poorest and most populated sectors of Santiago, a city where in winter ( especially in June and July) the public health network is usually saturated by respiratory diseases.

With figures that seemed under control, triumphant tones among the authorities and panic over the economic fall, President Sebasti?n Pi?era and several mayors gave signs to recover activity, such as the opening of some shopping centers and the order to return public officials.

The coronavirus pandemic has left a total of 589 people dead in Chile after 45 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, representing a new record in the country, the Ministry of Health authorities reported on Thursday.

The number of people infected in the last 24 hours was 3,964, of which 3,538 had symptoms and 426 were asymptomatic, which places the total number of coronavirus cases in Chile at 57,581 since the first positive was confirmed on March 3.

Of the total cases presented in this time, 23,992 correspond to people who have recovered while 33,000 are still active.

"It is evident that the number of cases is increasing, that means that in the next few days that will cause pressure on the healthcare network," said the Minister of Health, Jaime Ma?alich, in the daily press appearance in which he presents the new pandemic data.

In this regard, the undersecretary of Healthcare Networks, Arturo Z??iga, reported that there are 943 patients hospitalized in intensive care units, of which 795 are under mechanical ventilation and 148 of them remain in critical condition.

"Yesterday we presented a hospital occupation nationwide of 83%, with 2,162 intensive care beds, increasing the number of beds by 53 compared to the previous day. This has allowed us to maintain this level of occupation," he said.

THE CAPITAL CONCENTRATES THE MAJORITY OF CASES

Last week, the Chilean government decreed a mandatory total of 40 in Santiago de Chile and part of its suburbs, a measure that keeps nearly 7 million people confined in their homes and that lasted this Wednesday until May 29 before the advance of the pandemic.

The Metropolitan Region, in which Santiago de Chile is located, concentrates 44,635 of the total number of coronavirus cases (77%) and 388 of the deaths (65%). In fact, 40 of the last 45 deceased belonged to this territory.

Until now, this type of mega-quarantine has been ruled out by the Government, which since the start of the pandemic defended "selective and strategic" confinements, with movement restrictions imposed and lifted in each commune (neighborhood) depending on the new infections

In addition to Santiago and its periphery, the towns of Antofagasta, Iquique, Alto Hospicio and Mejillones - all north of the capital - and the southern town of Lonquimay, in La Araucan?a, also renewed for a week.

In total, throughout the country, almost 8 million people will be quarantined.

PI?ERA REQUESTS UNIT

The President of Chile, Sebasti?n Pi?era, sent a telematic message to the population on Thursday and said he called for "the unity of all Chileans" to fight the coronavirus.

"Today, when our country and the whole world, we live in very hard times, I would like to ... give a message of faith and hope, and ask for the unity of all Chileans," he said.

The pandemic is taking its toll on the Chileans' pocket and this Monday the first protests were registered for lack of work and food in the most humble neighborhoods on the outskirts of the capital, despite the fact that the Government promised the delivery of 2.5 million baskets food.
