Sixth COVID-19 case after woman returns from Iran

NSW Health has confirmed a sixth case of COVID-19 in a woman who recently returned from Iran and is urging anyone who may have been on the same flight to seek immediate health assessment if symptoms develop within 14 days.

Anyone on Qatar Airways flight QR908 from Qatar to Sydney that was scheduled to arrive at 6.45pm on Sunday 23 February should be on the alert for symptoms of COVID-19, which include fever, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath. If symptoms develop, people who were on that flight should isolate themselves straight away and contact their GP or local emergency department.

This latest case is not linked to, and was not on the same flight, as the fifth confirmed case who has also returned from Iran but on a different day...

Fast-moving situation': NSW confirms more cases of COVID-19, hospital staff quarantined
By Rachel Clun and Kate Aubusson
Updated March 3, 2020 — 6.21pmfirst published at 3.21pm

Multiple patients and staff at Ryde Hospital have been quarantined after coming into contact with a doctor diagnosed with COVID-19 as the number of cases in NSW jumps to 13 and more expected overnight.

Hospital emergency departments across the state are bracing for a deluge of patients, with health authorities predicting coronavirus outbreaks will converge with an early and severe flu season...

I now know one of the first degree contacts of one of the recently confirmed cases here in NSW. I can also confirm that our government is not performing proper contact tracing or advising appropriate quarantine procedures for those potentially exposed.

This is especially true, in this case, where Ambulance NSW employees would routinely arrive at the medical facility and utilised the same shared toilet facilities that the infected doctor used, before departing to have potentially further contacts with the general public. None of this is being identified or traced. Only patients are being traced!

We are not organised and we are not efficient ..., yet. Hopefully this will improve quickly, but right now I am sure that person to person spread is happening unabated in Australia.

(Update, as I was typing, Shiloh posted the above which identifies the case at Ryde. Staff have been notified but they haven't been quarantined and despite recommendations to wear masks earlier in the day, they were requested to "stop wearing them, as it was scaring patients" later).

An additional six confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Sydney this evening brings the total number of positive infections in NSW since the outbreak began to 22.
The new cases include an elderly female resident at a Macquarie Park nursing facility, a female doctor who works at Liverpool Hospital, a female patient from the Northern Beaches, a male from Cronulla and a female who is believed to have returned from the Philippines.
Dr Kerry Chant passed on her sympathy to the family of a 95 year old resident from the Dorothy Henderson Lodge at Macquarie Park who died on Tuesday in hospital and has tested positive to the virus.
“The female doctor who was diagnosed on March 4 had no history of overseas travel. We are immediately establishing which staff and patients may need to self-isolate and be tested for COVID-19 should they be unwell. A female resident aged in her 70s at Dorothy Henderson Lodge, where a female nurse was diagnosed with the virus, has also tested positive.
A confirmed case, woman in her 60s who arrived back in Australia on March 3, is believed to have returned from the Philippines. Her travel details are being obtained and will be disclosed if she posed a risk to any other passengers on her flight.
More information about the latest cases, a female in her 30s tested at the Northern Beaches Hospital, and a man in his 50s from Cronulla, will be disclosed as soon as their movements are established.
Dr Chant also stressed that a Macquarie University lecturer is a man who has previously been diagnosed having returned from Iran. He is not an additional case today and did not attend the campus after his return from overseas.
NSW Health is continuing to find and respond to cases as they are diagnosed to slow any spread of COVID-19 in the community.
NSW Health Pandemic Plans are available on the NSW Health website.

Despite reports to the contrary yesterday, staff are choosing to force self quarantine rather than being directed to self quarantine. This is a disaster of management for this outbreak.
