100th victim of H1N1 confirmed in PUNE

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/28yrold-citys-100th-swine-flu-victim/537876/

Twenty-eight-year-old Mohini Santosh Undre from Manjari Khurd of Haveli taluka in Pune district became the 100th H1N1 victim in the district. Mohini, who died of swine flu at Noble Hospital on Thursday, was admitted here on October 27 and was on artificial ventilation.

Though the health authorities are gearing up for a possible second wave of the virus with the onset of winter, there are many who feel the level of prepredness in Pune is far from adequate.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) claimed that private hospitals are not being involved and there is a lack of preparedness in case there is a second wave of H1N1 virus. Dr Dilip Sarda, president of city unit of IMA, said only a few hospitals are involved in treatment of swine flu patients. ?We are no longer involved in any of the plans of the administration to tackle a second wave,? he said.

MUMBAI: As temperatures in the city dip, out-patient departments (OPDs) are seeing an increase in viral infection and fever cases. General practitioners say viral fever cases have doubled over the last fortnight.

"Since temperatures have gone down and there is smog in the mornings, there has been certainly a rise in the numbers of people suffering from viral fever, cough and cold. In fact, the numbers have doubled from the last fortnight," said Dr Hemant Thacker from Jaslok Hospital.

Not just hospitals, clinics too have a long line of people waiting to be treated for minor ailments like running noses and croaky throats. "We have about 40-50 patients suffering from viral infections everyday," said Dr Vasant Shenoy, who has a clinic in Santacruz (W).

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) agrees with the doctors. "There is about a 25% increase in viral cases as compared to the last month. In a big city like Mumbai, where either malaria or flu keeps striking people, there is nothing one can do to avoid falling sick besides maintaining proper hygiene," said Dr Hozie Kapadia, secretary of IMA, Maharashtra.

Even though a rise in viral cases is normal at this time of the year, doctors say the pollution-mixed mist in the morning that can be a cause of concern for asthma and chronic bronchitis patients. "Many patients come with complaints of problems in swallowing, broken voice and itchiness in the respiratory tract only in the morning. This is happening because of the mist mixed with pollution that settles over the city at night," said Dr Thacker adding that the people who already suffer from respiratory problems need to be careful. "We advise all our patients who suffer from asthma or chronic bronchitis problems to increase their inhaler dosages and to take vaccinations against influenza," he said.

NAGPUR: Sonu Jangid, a 23 year old H1N1 positive patient from Nandanvan, died in the swine flu isolation ward on Tuesday morning taking the death toll at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to 16 and in city to 22. What is alarming is that 13 of these patients have died within last one month in the second wave of the infection. Three deaths took place in last ten days. But the administration says the situation is not very alarming but it is gearing up once again to remind citizens of all precautions that needed to be taken.

Five patients have died in private hospital-- three in Orange City Hospital and Research Institute, one each in Child Hospital and one at Care hospital-- while one died at India Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC). "Sonu was admitted to the swine flu ward on January 5 and was put on ventilator within a few hours. Most of the patients put on ventilator are not surviving," said Dr A Niswade, dean, GMCH. GMCH is prepared to handle all types of situations and has been seeking support from private hospitals also in handling patients on ventilator, he added. GMCH had so far sent 618 swab and blood samples. From this, 473 have tested negative, 114 positive and six reports are awaited. The hospital has a stock of 10,830 Fluvir capsules, 245 syrup bottles, 5000 N-95 masks, 50 personal protection kits and 6000 normal masks.

On Tuesday evening, the ward had nine patients of which three are H1N1 positive. A 32-year-old man from Khadgaon road is on ventilator. The admitted patients include three positive, five suspected and one negative patient, including a six-month-old positive baby who has almost recovered.

Though the number of patients in OPD continues to fluctuate between 10 and 30 the number of new positive patients is on the rise. The total number of positive patients so far since August has reached 132 which include 114 in GMCH, 12 in IGGMC and six in private hospitals.

Pradeep Dange, resident deputy collector, told TOI that administration is keeping a tab on the situation and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's health department is already revising training programmes for school children.

NAGPUR: Sindhu Surduse, a 35 year old H1N1 positive from Bahadurpura, died from acute respiratory distress at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Intensive Care Unit on January 17.

However, Surduse's positive test report from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune arrived only on January 19, two days after her death. The preventive social medicine department, which is expected to record all positive deaths and update the administration, was informed about her death and H1N1 positive status only on Thursday.

Head of medicine department Dr Y V Bansod told TOI that as Surduse was admitted to ICU, she was put on Fluvir drug even before the NIV report came in.

Unfortunately, GMCH administration appears to be going casual on swine flu issue. This was evident from the fact that the doctors treating her had not even documented her address properly, sources said. It is still not know if Surduse's family members are being administered preventive medicine course.

The practice of holding press conferences to give routine updates over flu figures has also been discontinued by acting college dean Dr Niswade. Nor has the dean bothered to appoint any official to share this information as was the case earlier when the PRO regularly maintained a record and shared it with media.

At 312, Maharashtra has highest swine flu toll among states

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date updated: 2 hours ago
Provided by : Bolohealth
Mumbai, January 29: Over the months since swine flu or influenza A (H1N1) was first reported in India, in Hyderabad, the virus has spread. Today, almost every state has confirmed cases of the infection as well as swine flu related fatalities. Maharashtra, with 312 deaths so far remains the state with the highest number of swine flu deaths recorded.

It may be pertinent to note that Pune in Maharashtra recorded the first swine flu related fatality in India when a 14-year-old girl succumbed to the disease in the city on August 3, 2009. The second and third fatalities from the country, over the next few days, were also from Mumbai and Pune respectively, both in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra is followed by Gujarat which has had 223 deaths, Rajasthan which has had 176 deaths and Karnataka which has had 141 deaths, so far. From the other states, Delhi has had 93 deaths, Andra Pradesh 52, Punjab 38, Kerala and Haryana 36 each, Madhya Pradesh 21, Uttar Pradesh 18, Uttarakhand 13, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh 8 each, Tamil Nadu 7, Chhattisgarh and Puducherry 6 each, Goa 5, Jammu and Kashmir 4, Orrissa 3, Assam 2 and Mizoram and Dadra and Nagar Haveli 1 death each.

Though most transmissions in India are now between people who have been infected within the country itself, it may be worth noting that the states with the highest infections, and deaths, are those which enjoy a significant influx of tourists and visitors from abroad.
