Two youths die, swine flu toll in city climbs to 56
Pune A 24-year-old man, Rupesh Sondkar from Kothrud, and 26-year-old Mahananda Khajappa Sonkamble from Ambegaon Budruk succumbed to swine flu here on Sunday.
With these deaths, Pune has recorded 56 swine flu deaths till date. A total of seven persons tested positive for swine flu on Sunday, while reports of 14 patients are awaited, said Dr Ashok Mehta, joint director of state health services.
Sondkar was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital after he complained of severe cold and cough. He tested positive for swine flu and was shifted to Sassoon Hospital on September 13. He was on ventilator and died on Sunday.
Sonkamble was admitted to Bharati and Sanjivani Hospitals before being shifted to Sassoon. She was brought to Sassoon on Saturday and put on ventilator. She died at 4.30 pm on Saturday.
“Both Sonkamble and Sondkar were showing signs of acute respiratory distress
syndrome,” Mehta said.
A total of 21 patients are in intensive care units and 10 are on ventilator. The number of patients in hospital has increased from 158 last Sunday to 210 this Sunday. Sixty patients have been discharged from hospitals.

Ajay Chaudhary, a 32-year-old resident of Anant Nagar who had tested positive for swine flu and was on dialysis at the Government Medical
College and Hospital (GMCH), died of acute respiratory distress at 12.45 am on Sunday. He was on ventilator for the past two days. This was the second confirmed swine flu death in city within a week.
The cause of two earlier deaths, a 24-year-old girl and a 41-yearold man, could not be known as their samples were spoilt in transit to NIV, Pune. Chaudhary was admitted at the superspecialty hospital of GMCH for regular dialysis treatment on September 12. He was shifted to isolation ward on Saturday after his blood and swab reports arrived from NIV and he tested positive.
He did not have any history of travelling to Pune or Mumbai or any direct contact with a person with flu-like symptoms. Another 40-year-old woman,
Phulabai M Chaudhary, a resident of Abhyankar Nagar who was admitted to the isolation ward also died of acute respiratory distress at 8.40 pm Saturday night. But she had tested negative for H1N1. “We did not inform the media about her death as she had tested negative,” said Dr A Niswade, acting dean of GMCH. She was brought to GMCH from Lata Mangeshkar Hospital on ventilator and was in the ward for two days. Two more patients, both boys between age 10-13 were admitted on Sunday after screening in the flu out patient department (OPD) taking the number of admitted patients to 12. Of these, only one is a known positive case.
Presently three children, including a 10-year-old boy (tested positive) from Hudkeshwar, are admitted to GMCH. Due to space constraint the other two boys have been admitted to the paediatrics ward. No patient is on ventilator. On Sunday, relatives of some patients entered into heated arguments with the GMCH staff . “The relatives were told there was no need to collect samples of patient as they did not have any symptom.
But they insisted that samples be taken,” said Niswade appealing for cooperation from public. “Our resident doctors are working hard but relatives have been regularly creating such problems. Police had to be called on Wednesday after death of a patient," he said.
Ro's Notes: I will record all of the deaths in this article to the database, but without some confirmation I can't add them to the total. It seems also that the H1N1 ward at GMCH is overflowing.
