60-year-old dies at Sassoon

PUNE: A 60-year-old woman from Tathawade village in Pune district died at the Sassoon hospital, 11 others tested positive for the H1N1 virus on
Friday.
The woman, who was admitted to the Sassoon hospital on September 25, died at 6.45 am on Saturday. "Her throat swab sample has been sent for testing to the National Institute of Virology (NIV). The report is awaited," said Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services. While the throat swab report of the 81-year-old man who died at the YCM hospital in Pimpri on Friday, has tested negative, added Mehta.

Meanwhile, around nine critical patients are presently being treated at the isolation ICUs of various private and government hospitals. "All of them are on ventilator," Mehta added.

As many as 11 people tested positive for the H1N1 influenza in the city on Friday. "A total number of 585 suspected patients are being administered Tamiflu tablets, while around 22, 258 have been given the tablets so far," said Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health service. Around 11,331 people were screened across the district, adding that 53 were discharged on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the PMC has declared holiday to all the screening centres on Monday for Dassera. However, Naidu Hospital will remain open. All the 53 screening centres in PMC limits will start working from Tuesday.

11 test positive for H1N1

PUNE: As many as 11 people tested positive for the H1N1 influenza on Sunday.


With this, the total number of positive cases reported across the district has reached 1,225. Meanwhile, the 60-year-old woman from Tathawade village in Pune district who died in the Sassoon hospital on Friday, tested negative on Sunday, said Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services.

"Total 526 suspected patients are on Tamiflu while approximately 22,784 have been given tablets so far," said Mehta. Around 6,081 people were screened across the district and 84 were discharged on Sunday.

Fifteen patients are presently being treated at the isolation ICUs of various private and government run hospitals. Of which, five are on ventilator, said Mehta. "The Sassoon hospital has seven patients in isolation ICUs, of which two are on ventilator. While there are seven patients admitted in isolation ICUs of private hospitals, of which three are on ventilator," said Mehta.

Meanwhile, the PMC has declared holiday to all the screening centres on Monday on the occasion of Dussehra. However, Naidu Hospital will remain open. All the 53 screening centres in PMC limits will start working from Tuesday. Around 4.78 lakh people have been screened across the district so far.

Nashik, Sep 28 (PTI) A 29-year-old woman died of swine flu at the civil hospital here, taking the toll in the viral infection in the district to 15, health authorities said today.

Archana Shinde was admitted to the Nashik Civil Hospital on Friday after she showed symptoms of the viral infection, they said, adding her medical reports tested positive for the virus.

Five more succumb to swine flu, 178 fresh cases

New Delhi, Sep 29 (PTI) Five more persons succumbed to swine flu while 178 fresh cases of the disease were reported from across the country today.

With today's cases, the total number of those dead due to swine flu has reached 308 while those affected have crossed 10,000, according to the Union Health ministry.

Delhi reported the highest 56 cases followed by Maharashtra 43, Tamil Nadu 27 and Assam 16.

Of the 178 cases reported during the day, three are imported cases and the rest are indigenous.

The five deaths reported are from from Delhi (1), Maharashtra (2), Haryana (1) and Andhra Pradesh (1).

Of the two dead in Maharashtra, one was Madhav Mandlik who died in Nashik.

According to civil surgeon Dr Asaram Bhalsingh, Mandlik was admitted to the Nashik Civil hospital four days back after he showed symptoms of the virus, they said, adding he later tested positive for the viral infection.

Suspected cases from Nagpur;

40-yr-old with H1N1 symptoms dies

NAGPUR: A 40 year old man, suffering from acute respiratory distress and pneumonia, died at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on
Tuesday morning at 9.15 am. Though the patient, resident of Wadi, had symptoms of swine flu, it could not be ascertained if he died of H1N1 as his blood and swab samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) on Tuesday morning and reports are expected only by Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, of the two suspected deaths on September 23 and 25, one patient Manish Kantode tested negative for the H1N1 virus while the report of other patient Pankaj Tiwari from Warthi village in Bhandara is still awaited.

"The patient who died on Tuesday morning had taken treatment with two other city based private doctors, Dr Jambhulkar and Dr Damke, before being referred to GMCH on OPD basis. He was admitted to GMCH on September 27 night at 10 pm," said GMCH dean Dr Deepti Dongaonkar.

GMCH received seven reports on Tuesday and all of them turned out to be negative. Two positive children, who were undergoing treatment for past few days, were discharged after complete recovery. Till Tuesday evening only two patients were admitted to the swine flu isolation ward and of these the condition of a 60-year-old patient from Saunsar is critical. "The patient is not on ventilator but his condition is bad," said professor and head, medicine Dr Bansod.

Of the 10 private hospitals, who had offered to start special swine flu isolation ward, to reduce the load of suspected swine flu patients at GMCH, two hospitals namely Care Hospital and Suretech hospital withdrew their support. Other hospitals who continue to extend their support include Wockhardt, Hope, Kunal, Get Well, KRIMS, OCHRI and the Chandak hospitals which were inspected by a team of GMCH doctors to give them a formal go ahead. The team has sent it's inspection report to the directorate of medical education and research (DMER), Mumbai which will finalise the list of hospitals.

NAGPUR: The 40-year-old man who died on Tuesday has tested positive for swine flu, taking the death toll in the city to four. Rakesh Upadhyay, a
resident of Dattawadi, had been admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after complaining of acute respiratory distress and pneumonia on September 27 night. He died on Tuesday at 9.15am.

GMCH dean Dr Dipti Dongaonkar said Upadhyay had been treated by two private doctors before being referred to GMCH. The GMCH received three reports on Wednesday of which one was positive while two were negative. Two patients admitted in the isolation ward yesterday were still there while two new patients were admitted today. A 41-year-old man has also been admitted to the ICU in a serious condition and he has been put on ventilator. A 60-year-old man from Saunsar who was critical yesterday is still on ventilator.

Meanwhile, GMCH has placed an order for purchase of ventilators, as they need upgradation. Dr Arun Humne said that there are six ventilators at present, of which three are used for swine flu. "We have ordered three more, which should reach us by Diwali," Dr Dongaonkar added.

Man with flu like symptoms dies

NAGPUR: With yet another death, the suspected death toll due to swine flu gave another jolt to the belief that its spread has been contained.
51-year-old Anant Jambhulkar, who was admitted in the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at 10.40 pm on Wednesday, breathed his last at 2.15 pm on Thursday.
He was admitted to the isolation ward with complaints of severe chest problem and breathlessness. "Jambhulkar was taken to several hospitals including any Ayurvedic hospital, Central Government Health dispensary and also the Chest Care Hospital before being admitted to GMCH. He was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis along with other flu symptoms," informed dean GMCH Dr Deepti Dongaonkar.

His swab had been taken and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and the report is awaited. Apart from this, three more patients, including a 20 year-old girl from Gandhinagar who is a student of LAD College, were admitted to the isolation ward on Thursday. Their samples will be sent to the NIV soon, she added. The condition of the patient, who was on ventilator on Wednesday, is said to be stable. "This is fourth case in which the condition of patient has improved after being put on ventilator," Dr Dongaonkar pointed out.

Another three patients were screened at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMC). However, their swabs will not be sent to NIV as per the new policy making testing mandatory only for admitted patients.

Mumbai, Oct 5 (PTI) A total of 145 people have died of swine flu so far in Maharashtra, a health official said today.

Till date, 9,18,035 people have been examined for the virus and 44,952 suspected patients administered Tamiflu.

The number of persons who tested positive for the H1N1 influenza is 3,534 of which 3,270 have been treated and discharged.

Altogether 345 people, including 121 positive and 224 suspected cases, are still being treated in various hospitals in the state, the official said.

Isolation wards have been set up at 101 places and screening centres at 607 places in the state.

Karad resident dies of suspected H1N1 flu

SATARA: Twenty-six-year-old Shridhar Gulab Sutar of Chikhali Masur village in Karad taluka died of suspected H1N1 flu at the Krantisinh Nana Patil
government hospital in Satara on Sunday evening. Also, four more suspected H1N1 patients have been admitted to the hospital.

Speaking to TOI, Padmakar Kadam, head of the quarantine ward at the hospital, said, "Sutar worked with a company in Talegaon near Pune and had come to the village to celebrate the festival of Dussehra. He developed cold, fever and cough about five days ago and was admitted to a private hospital in Masur. When his condition did not improve, he was sent for an X-ray in Karad where doctors noticed that his symptoms were similar to H1N1 flu and sent him to the government hospital".

Kadam said Sutar was in a serious condition when he was brought to the hospital. "His nasal and throat swab samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, but he died on Sunday before his test reports could come in," Kadam said. Sutar leaves behind his mother, wife and a 10-day-old baby.

District civil surgeon Suresh Jagdale said four suspected H1N1 patients were admitted to the government hospital. "These include a 19-year-old man from Karanje in Satara, a 30-year-old from Kirwal village in Karad, a 36-year-old woman from Kole-Macchindra village of Walva taluka and a four-and-a-half-year-old girl from Koregaon taluka. Their swab samples have been sent to the NIV," he said.

Meanwhile, two H1N1-positive patients from Phaltan have been sent to Pune for treatment. A 35-year-old teacher and a 48-year-old fruit seller have tested positive for H1N1. The fruit seller had visited Pune 10 days ago and fell ill after his return. He was sent to the Sassoon hospital where his swab reports came positive. All the eight family members of the fruit seller were being given Tamiflu tablets and were under observation.

Mumbai, Oct 6 (PTI) A 28-year-old man today succumbed to swine flu in Maharashtra, taking the death toll due to the deadly virus to 147 in the state.

Irshad Abbas Shaikh died of H1N1 virus at Mission Hospital in Miraj, Dean of Sangli Government Hospital Dr Shekhar Rajderkar said.

Shaikh was put on ventilator and administered tamiflu but his condition deteriorated and he died at 12.30 pm today, he said.

Till date, 9,34,740 people have been examined for swine flu with 45,820 suspected patients being administered tamiflu.

The number of persons who tested positive for the H1N1 influenza is 3,578 of which 3,305 have been treated and discharged.


Altogether 322 persons, including 126 positive and 196 suspected cases, are still being treated at various hospitals in the state, the official said.

Pregnant woman dies of suspected swine flu

NAGPUR: A 26-year-old pregnant woman, who was on ventilator at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) since Monday, died of swine flu
like symptoms at 6.50am on Tuesday morning. Her blood and swab samples were sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune, on Tuesday morning and the reports are expected to come only by Wednesday or Thursday evening.

The woman, a resident of Indora, had been brought to GMCH in critical condition on Monday afternoon. She was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and was soon put on ventilator.

"It was her first pregnancy and she was only four months pregnant. She was under treatment at Ambedkar Hospital in Indora and at a private children's hospital in Dharampeth before coming to GMCH. She was put on ventilator as she was suffering from pneumonia and respiratory problem. She died of acute respiratory distress, hypoxia and pneumonia in the ICU. She had been put on Fluvir (Oseltamivir) immediately after admission. We did not shift her to the swine flu isolation ward as the shifting could have complicated her situation," said GMCH dean Dr Deepti Dongaonkar.

Another patient, a 25-year-old man from Jagnath Budhwari, who has been under treatment in the isolation ward and is on ventilator, has tested positive for swine flu. The doctors said his condition is improving and is stable.

On Tuesday, three more suspected patients, a 35-year-old man from Dhapewada near Kalmeshwar, a 30-year-old woman from Narendra Nagar, and a 22-year-man from Shriram Nagar near Narendra Nagar were admitted to the isolation ward. The condition of all three is stable.

Of the eight reports received on Tuesday, only one (the 25-year-old man on ventilator) tested positive. Till now only 73 patients (both outdoor and indoor) have tested positive for H1N1 virus, and of these only three died of swine flu.

H1N1 toll in city reaches seven

NAGPUR: Dheeraj Goze, a 25-year-old H1N1 man from Jagnath Budhwari who was on ventilator in the swine flu isolation ward at Government Medical
College and Hospital (GMCH) since last Sunday, died on Friday at 3 pm. With this, the H1N1 toll at GMCH has reached seven. Rajesh Kumbhare, a 28-year-old man from Gumgaon who died on Thursday has also tested positive as per report received from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, on Friday.

Goze's condition was critical from the time he was admitted to GMCH. His condition deteriorated in the last two days. He died of acute respiratory distress. Before that, he had already gone suffered renal failure and was put on dialysis. His oxygen levels had also kept fluctuating heavily even on ventilator. "GMCH doctors tried their best to save him but he died at 3 pm on Friday," said dean Dr Deepti Dongaonkar. "Compared to most hospitals and cities affected by swine flu infection, toll in city is relatively less. Of the 123 patients admitted so far in the isolation ward 112 have been discharged. Of the total 17 deaths till now in isolation ward, seven have tested positive and seven negative. Samples of three could not be tested due to technical reasons," the dean added.

On Friday, GMCH received four reports from NIV. Of these, two were reports of samples collected by the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (GMCH) and two from GMCH. Three reports were negative and only Kumbhare's was positive. Three new patients including two young men and one woman were admitted to the isolation ward after screening from the OPD on Friday. Although only serious patients are being admitted but 25-30% patients with mild symptoms are being given oseltamivir capsules on OPD basis.

Against the background of increasing H1N1 infection, government has increased the availability of swine flu medicine. Oseltamivir tablets, that were earlier available at only two city outlets, will now be available at 20. Assistant Commissioner, Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Nagpur has released the list of 20 drugstores throughout district now permitted to sell the medicine.

Mumbai, Oct 12 (PTI) The Maharashtra government today said as many as 3,586 patients have been cured of swine flu and discharged.

Till date, 10,19,886 people were examined for swine flu and 50,193 suspected patients were put on Tamiflu treatment in the state.

After examining, 3,822 persons were found positive. Of these, 3,586 persons are cured and discharged. 272 persons, including 76 positive and 196 suspected patients, are still being treated at various hospitals in the state, an official release said.

Total number of deaths due to Swine flu is 160, it said.

Mumbai, Pune, Nashik top State H1N1 death list

MUMBAI: Mumbai, Pune and Nashik together account for the maximum number of H1N1 deaths in Maharashtra. While the deaths have been sporadic in the rest of the State, patients from rural areas coming to urban centres for treatment indicated the disease had spread to the interiors, Maharashtra Health Secretary Sharvari Gokhale said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

The total number of swine flu deaths in the State till date is 168. Of this, Mumbai, Pune and Nashik account for 136 deaths. So far, the death toll in Mumbai stands at 27, in Pune district at 84 (including Solapur district), and in Nashik at 25. ?These three have contributed the maximum to the death list.?

Till date, the State has screened 10,38,760 people for swine flu, of which there were 3,892 positive cases, and 51,500 were administered Tamiflu. There were no deaths in Pune city in the last two weeks and things were under control in Mumbai, Ms. Gokhale said. However, she expressed concern regarding two instances where patients had died despite being given Tamiflu.

NAGPUR: A 30-year-old man from Umri Fata died of suspected swine flu on Friday afternoon at 12.15 pm in the swine flu isolation ward at the
Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). He had been referred to GMCH from Hitech hospital, Kamptee.

?The patient was admitted late on Thursday afternoon in the intensive care unit (ICU). Doctors attending on him sent him to the swine flu ward at 11.25 pm on Thursday night. His condition was not good and he was put on ventilator immediately.

By Friday afternoon despite all efforts, he died of pneumonia and acute respiratory distress. His samples have been sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune, and we will get his H1N1 status on Saturday or Monday,? said GMCH dean Dr Deepti Dongaonkar.

13 new swine flu deaths take India's toll to 444

New Delhi, Oct 25 : Thirteen new swine flu deaths were reported Sunday, taking the total toll in India due to Influenza A(H1N1) virus to 444, health authorities said here.




For the first time, Punjab and Mizoram reported deaths - one each - since the first death was reported in the country Aug 3.

The maximum deaths were from Maharashtra where 11 people died since Friday. The total toll in the state has now touched 185 - the highest in the country.

Kerala, where 10 deaths had occured earlier, also recorded two new casualties.

Also, 90 new cases were recorded Sunday. With this the total number of people affected with the contagious virus has gone up to 13,232.

Of the 90 cases, 22 alone were from Karnataka.

The other states where new cases were reported were - Maharashtra (21), Delhi (17), Andhra Pradesh (5) and Kerala (12).

Mumbai, Oct 26 (PTI) A total of 194 people have died of swine flu so far in Maharashtra, a health official said today.

Till date, 11,75,152 people have been examined for Swine flu, with 58,715 suspected patients being administered Tamiflu.

The number of persons who tested positive for the H1N1 influenza is 4,133 of which 3,885 have been treated and discharged.

Altogether 256 people, including 54 positive and 202 suspected cases, are still being treated at various hospitals in the state, the official said.

Isolation wards have been set up at 101 places and screening centres at 607 places in the state.

H1N1 flu toll rises to 14 in Marathwada

AURANGABAD: With the death of a pregnant woman on Sunday the H1N1 flu toll in Marathwada region rose 14 seven each from Aurangabad and Latur
divisions of the state health department.

According to B.K. Somani, superintendent of the government medical college and hospital (GMCH), Aurangabad, the latest victim, Meera Hivarale (27), was seven-month pregnant. Meera, a resident of Deolai, Beed-bypass, had been treated at a private hospital for five days before being shifted to the government hospital on Saturday evening with complaints of breathlessness.

She was put on ventilator, but she died the following day around 8 am due to acute respiratory disorder, Somani said.

"Her throat swab samples were tested positive for the H1N1 flu by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune. With this the total number of people who died at the hospital due to the swine flu has increased to 7," Somani added.

The GMCH dean Chandrakant Thorat said, "We have increased the capacity of the quarantine ward to accommodate 30 patients. Earlier, we had arrangement to admit only 20 patients." Thorat added that presently four patients are being treated for suspected swine flu symptoms in the quarantine ward at the GMCH.

The Latur division too has recorded seven H1N1 flu deaths, said S.S. Patil, the deputy director of health services, Latur. The latest victim was a pregnant woman identified as Farzana Pinjari (28) of Latur. Pinjari died at the government hospital on October 18, after being treated at a private hospital.

Meanwhile, B.M. Shetkar, assistant director of heath, Latur, said that so far 72,273 people have been screened in the division, of them 300 cases turned to be H1N1 positive. "As a precautionary measure we have given Tamiflu tablets to 2,500 suspected cases. The number of positive cases have decreased this week, he added.
