Guyana confirms its first H1N1 cases

Guyana last Saturday reported to the International Health Regulation Focal Point at the World Health Organization (WHO) that the first two cases of H1N1 have been identified here.

Both reported cases resided in Georgetown and were traced to international contacts.

?In both cases, we believe the original sources came from outside of Guyana?, a statement from the Ministry of Health says.

Both persons who were identified as Guyana?s first two confirmed cases sought medical attention at private hospitals and have been treated for H1N1. Other family members and friends who were in contact with these two individuals are being monitored by the surveillance team of the Ministry of Health.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy had warned several weeks ago that H1N1 would arrive in Guyana. The Ministry of Health is confident that its surveillance programme is capable of containing the spread of the virus.

Guyana is among the last of the CARICOM countries to confirm H1N1 cases.
