If I'm not mistaken, the total for Brazil is now 379. Post 125 shows an official total of 368; however, there are only 68 in Rio Grande do Sul, while Post 124 indicates that there are 78 in Rio Grande do Sul. Also, I don't believe the official total includes the recently reported death in Mato Grosso do Sul.

CURITIBA - The city of Curitiba recorded 30 deaths by influenza A (H1N1), popularly known as swine flu, which occurred from July 16 to August 11. The victims, 14 had no risk factor, 14 had comorbidities, one was pregnant and another had just win baby. The Municipal Department of Health investigating 22 other deaths by severe acute respiratory disease and has already confirmed three per common flu. There are a total of 55 flu deaths confirmed or under investigation by the city. The country has officially recorded 368 deaths caused by influenza A (H1N1), 46 of them pregnant. The Ministry of Health sees signs of reversal of the disease.

"It is a virus that has affected healthy young adults. This has been a study in the world"

Among patients who died and had comorbidities, three suffered heart disease, two were with diabetes, two with epilepsy, one was a smoker, one was obese, a hemophiliac, a hypertension, one with arthritis, one with Down syndrome and one with lupus . The average time from onset of symptoms until the evolution to death was 9 days.

The municipal secretary of Health in Curitiba, Luciano Ducci, said the death of healthy people is something that draws attention not only in the capital, but in Brazil and worldwide.

                      - It is a virus that has affected healthy young adults. This has been a study in the world - said the secretary, who was at yesterday's City Council explaining the situation of the disease.

The Department of Health is doing a survey to show whether people who died taking the drug Tamiflu. According to the secretary, the majority was hospitalized in hospitals that took the drug at some time of treatment - but not necessarily within 48 hours after initial symptoms, according to the recommendation that the medicine is more efficient.

Severe and patients at risk (pregnant, elderly, children under five years and patients with a prior disease) receive Tamiflu in the onset of symptoms. According to the Secretary, for other cases the doctor prescribes the medication according to individual assessment of patient and public authorities guarantee the medicine. Ducci said it is not possible to conclude that the patients would have survived if they had taken the Tamiflu.
Tamiflu: sale with a prescription in the U.S. and Mexico

Main drug available for treatment of influenza A, Tamiflu is administered without consensus in the world. While in Brazil the distribution is centralized by the Ministry of Health, countries like Mexico and United States authorize the sale in pharmacies on presentation of a prescription.

Initial outbreak of the disease, Mexico does not nationalize the distribution, but established a system of control to prevent indiscriminate use of antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir (Relenza). To buy the drugs, you must submit a prescription. The document is retained in the pharmacy, which must account for the sale of medicine to the Department of Health

Of all existing policies with respect to new treatment of influenza, by the Department of Health of Great Britain is one of the most liberal in regard to the possibility of access to medicine.

The British government created the National Pandemic Flu Service (National pandemic influenza). In addition to a web site with guidelines, a service by phone - a 0800 through which the citizen makes the diagnosis of disease by telephone.

According to the advice of the press department of the British, the attendant asks about the symptoms that the person has. If the answers indicate that the patient is with influenza A, he receives an authorization number to get the product in one of the distribution. If, in addition to having a confirmed diagnosis, the person also is part of a group of risk, it is directed to seek medical attention.

The reality is very different from Brazil. The remedy is not in pharmacies, because the government buys the entire production. Here, as the protocols of the Ministry of Health and State Secretary of Health, the Tamiflu is indicated for a number of risk groups. The doctor has also scope to prescribe the drug to patients who are not in risk groups, but he considers that it needs to be medicated.
