B.C. records 435 new cases of COVID-19 and 4 more deaths
There are 241 people in hospital with the disease, 68 of whom are in intensive care

B.C. health officials announced 435 new cases of COVID-19 and four more deaths on Tuesday.

In a written statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix put the number of hospitalized patients at 241 people, 68 of whom are in intensive care.

Henry and Dix said B.C. is making progress on beating back the second wave of the pandemic, but we will need fewer cases and outbreaks before the current restrictions on social gatherings and events can be lifted.

"We can keep this positive, forward momentum going and help keep our province safe through the small efforts we make every day," they said.

"By saving our socializing and travel for another time, we are protecting the people we know and care for most, as well as those we may not know — an elderly neighbour across the street, the clerk at our local grocery store, our first responders and front-line health-care workers who are also doing their part."

A total of 1,263 people in B.C. have lost their lives to COVID-19 since the pandemic began, out of 71,387 confirmed cases to date.

There are currently 4,393 active cases of coronavirus in the province. Public health is monitoring 6,879 people across B.C. who are in self-isolation because of exposure to known COVID-19 cases. More than 65,618 people who tested positive have recovered...

B.C. health officials have message for anyone planning long weekend gatherings: 'Don't do it'
Another 445 cases of COVID-19 confirmed, 10 more deaths

On the Friday before the Family Day long weekend, B.C. health officials are pleading with everyone to stay local and stick to their households in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Health Minister Adrian Dix kept his message simple for anyone thinking of holding a gathering to mark the long weekend, Lunar New Year or Family Day: "Don't do it — now is not the time."

The warning came as the province announced 445 more cases of COVID-19 and 10 more deaths from the disease.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said there are now 4,347 active cases of the novel coronavirus across the province. That includes 226 patients who are in hospital, including 61 in intensive care.

Henry said B.C. is making progress on getting the second wave of the pandemic under control, but that it is going to continue, and everyone needs to stay local and stick to their households, in accordance with public health orders and advice.

"We are trending in the right direction ... but slowly," she said.

To date, 1,288 people have died of COVID-19 in B.C. out of 72,750 confirmed cases...

B.C. health officials reported 508 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and six additional deaths, while offering new details on the plan to vaccinate the province’s elderly.

In a live briefing, deputy provincial health officer Dr. Reka Gustafson said it left the province with 4,486 active cases.

Another 7,699 people were isolating due to potential exposure.

Of the new cases, 116 were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 286 were in the Fraser Health region, 22 were in the Vancouver Island Health region, 59 were in the Interior Health region and 25 were in the Northern Health region.

Within the Fraser Health region, Health Minister Adrian Dix said that new hotspots had cropped up in Abbotsford and the Tri-Cities area.

“What it tells us is that COVID-19 is everywhere, whether you’re in Prince Rupert or the Tri-Cities, it makes no sense now to go in person to do karaoke,” he said.

“It makes no sense now when you can do it virtually to have a trivia event with other people.”

B.C. has recorded 72 cases of COVID-19 variants, of which were the B.1.1.7 variant first reported in the U.K. and 20 were the B.1.351 variant first reported in South Africa.

There were 217 people in hospital, a drop of nine overnight and the fewest since Nov. 18. Sixty-one people were in critical or intensive care...

A faster-spreading COVID-19 variant first reported in the U.K. has been detected in positive cases at seven schools in B.C. Six of the schools are in the Surrey School District, while one more is in nearby Delta.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced mandatory mask guidelines earlier this month for students in middle and high schools.

The seven schools involved in Surrey are James Ardiel Elementary, Surrey Traditional Elementary School, Woodward Hill Elementary, A.H.P. Matthew Elementary, Tamanawis Secondary School and Gobind Sarvar School, which is an independent school in the city.

The school in Delta is Hellings Elementary School.

A statement from the Surrey School District to parents says the strain detected at two of the schools was connected to positive cases dating back to Jan. 26, because testing for the variants takes longer than the standard COVID-19 test.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in British Columbia continued to creep up over the weekend as the province recorded another 1,428 infections and eight related deaths.

The vast majority of variant cases involve the U.K. variant B.1.1.7, but there have also been 20 of South African variant B.1.31 and two of the Nigerian variant B.1.525.

Some of the U.K. variant cases have been connected to schools in the Fraser Health region, prompting concerns from parents and educators about the increased risk of transmission.

There are now 223 people in hospital, 63 of whom are in intensive care. Health officials said 71,313 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C., and there are 7,768 people under active health monitoring after being exposed to known case.

Henry and Dix also announced three new outbreaks, including at Vancouver General Hospital and Kelowna General Hospital.

The third is a community outbreak at Grand River Foods, a processing plant in Abbotsford where nearly two dozen staff members have tested positive so far.

There are now 12 active outbreaks in long-term care facilities and five in acute care units of hospitals.

Henry said that no deaths were recorded in long-term care homes — a reflection of the success of vaccinations in those settings.

"I think it is a moment to reflect as we start to receive increased supplies of immunization products, that we have delivered all of the vaccines as they've arrived," she said...

The latest numbers mean that the seven-day rolling average of new cases has been rising for a week straight.

Health officials are asking British Columbians to celebrate the anti-bullying message of Wednesday's Pink Shirt Day by showing kindness and respecting measures to reduce transmission of the novel coronavirus.

"Kindness is staying away from friends and family, it is offering thanks to the store clerk who reminds us to follow their safety plan, it is offering a smile — even behind our masks and assuming the best of everyone around us," Henry and Dix said.

The coronavirus has claimed 10 more lives in the last 24 hours, the highest one-day total in two weeks, bringing British Columbia's total deaths to 1,348 since the pandemic began.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry also announced 395 new cases of COVID-19 during a live news conference Thursday, reversing the rising trend seen over the last week.

The vast majority of deaths in B.C. — 88 per cent — have been in people 70 years of age and older, and aside from Thursday's totals, deaths have been heading steadily downward — a trend Henry says is likely to continue with 92 per cent of residents and staff in long-term care homes having received at least one shot of the vaccine.

She noted, however, that recently three people in their 30s have died from the virus, some of them with underlying health conditions. She said the deaths in younger people are not related to variants of the virus and that no one in B.C. has died from a variant strain...

...The province's reproductive rate for the coronavirus has crept above one, meaning that on average, each infected person is transmitting the virus to more than one other person.

And the positivity rate for new cases has also risen in tandem provincewide to 6.7 per cent, mostly driven, Henry said, by high positivity rates in Fraser Health — over eight per cent — and Northern Health — 11.5 per cent...
