COVID-19 in B.C.: 2,211 people test positive over new year's long weekend

VANCOUVER -- Another 2,211 people tested positive for COVID-19 in B.C. over the past four days, health officials revealed in their first briefing of the year.

Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the latest cases in a live briefing Monday. The province's top doctor also revealed another 45 people died from the disease over the past four days.

"Once again, the majority of them are our seniors and elders in long-term care," Henry said, speaking of the latest deaths. "I know of at least two First Nations elders who passed away over the last few days and that, of course, affects us all."

To date, 946 people have died in B.C. from COVID-19.

Of the new cases, 565 tested positive between Thursday and Friday, 607 between Friday and Saturday, 500 between Saturday and Sunday and 539 over the past 24 hours.

Twenty-two of the cases added to B.C.'s total over the weekend were epidemiologically linked, Henry said.

Since the start of the pandemic, B.C. has recorded 54,201 positive tests...

Eight more people have died of COVID-19 in B.C., as health officials confirmed 428 new cases on Tuesday.

Health Minister Adrian Dix announced the new numbers in a series of tweets.

There are currently 367 people in hospital, 77 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 954 people in B.C. have lost their lives due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

There are currently 6,472 active cases of coronavirus in the province. More than 45,999 people who tested positive have recovered.

On Monday, the province provided additional details of B.C.'s immunization program. As of Jan. 4, B.C. had received 54,625 doses of vaccine.

Henry and Dix said the province is on track to hit its target of immunizing 550,000 people in high priority groups by March...

VANCOUVER -- Health officials in British Columbia announced another 18 deaths related to COVID-19 on Friday, as well as 617 new infections.

The update puts the provincial death toll at 988 and the total number of cases identified since the start of the pandemic at 56,632.

In a statement, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix offered their condolences to "everyone who has lost their loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic."

The latest infections were outnumbered by 831 recoveries recorded over the same period, which helped push B.C.'s active case count down to 6,118. Active cases have been decreasing for weeks after reaching a peak of about 10,000 in mid-December.

Hospitalization decreased slightly as well, to 358, which includes 75 patients in intensive care.

Another 8,755 people are under active health monitoring after being exposed to a known case of COVID-19...

B.C. health officials have confirmed 1,475 new cases of COVID-19 in the province over the last three days, as the provincial death toll from the virus reached 1,010.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix broke down the new cases in a news conference confirming 538 new cases between Friday and Saturday, 507 between Saturday and Sunday, and 430 between Sunday and Monday.

Twenty-two more people have died of the virus.

There are currently 5,220 active cases of the virus in the province, with 358 people in hospital, 72 of whom are in critical care...

B.C. health officials announced 446 new cases of COVID-19 and nine more deaths on Tuesday.

In a written statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix put the number of hospitalized patients at 368 people, 72 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 1,019 people in B.C. have lost their lives due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

There are currently 5,045 active cases of coronavirus in the province, the lowest since Nov. 9. Public health is monitoring 7,238 people across the province who are in self-isolation due to COVID-19 exposure. More than 51,144 people who tested positive have recovered.

There has been one new health-care facility outbreak at Mount St. Joseph's Hospital.

VANCOUVER -- B.C. has added 509 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 to its total, and nine deaths, health officials announced Friday in their last pandemic update of the week.

According to the joint written statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister of Adrian Dix, there are currently 4,604 active cases of the coronavirus in the province.

That total, which has been declining since a peak of about 10,000 in mid-December, includes 349 people who are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those, 68 are in intensive care...

B.C. has recorded 1,330 new cases of COVID-19 and 31 deaths in the province over a three day period.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided the update Monday in a news conference, saying there were 584 new cases recorded between Friday and Saturday, 445 new cases between Saturday and Sunday, and 301 new cases between Sunday and Monday.

The Sunday-Monday case jump of 301 new cases represents the lowest level of one-day growth since Nov. 3, with active cases of the virus now at their lowest level since Nov. 7. Restrictions were first implemented for some health regions in B.C. on Nov. 8.

"Clearly the things we are doing in our community are working," said Henry, adding that outbreaks continue in essential workplaces and in long-term care homes.

"We are at a tipping point that I am feeling hopeful and positive about. I am hopeful that outbreaks are slowing down and we are stopping that second generation." ...

B.C. records another 465 COVID-19 cases, 12 deaths and 70 in ICU

British Columbia has recorded another 465 COVID-19 cases Tuesday bringing the provincial total to 61,912 since the pandemic began.

Another 12 people have died from complications with the virus, with the total number of deaths now standing at 1,090.

Two more people have been admitted to the ICU, meaning there are now 70 people in critical care in the province. There are 329 in hospital, which is down 14 from Monday.

In total, 55,099 people have recovered from the virus but there remain 4,331 active cases and 6,864 people in isolation...

BC health officials announce 500 new COVID-19 cases

British Columbia health officials announced 500 new test-positive COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the province to 62,412.

In a written statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said that broken down by health region, this equates to 125 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 216 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 32 in the Island Health region, 91 in the Interior Health region, 35 in the Northern Health region, and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are 4,345 active cases of COVID-19 in the province. There are 320 individuals currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 66 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation...

B.C. health officials announced 564 new cases of COVID-19 and 15 more deaths on Thursday.

In a written statement, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix put the number of hospitalized patients at 309 people, 68 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 1,119 people in B.C. have lost their lives to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

There are currently 4,450 active cases of coronavirus in the province, with public health monitoring 6,816 people across the province who are in self-isolation due to COVID-19 exposure. More than 56,010 people who tested positive have recovered.

There is a new community cluster in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region, in and around Williams Lake.

"We remind people to pay close attention to how they are feeling and to immediately arrange to get tested if they are feeling unwell with symptoms of COVID-19," Henry and Dix said in the written statement.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry urged B.C. residents to stay home, not travel and not engage in social interactions on Monday, saying COVID numbers have plateaued at an average of 500 cases a day — a number she said was still dangerously high.

She said the shortage of vaccine, combined with the presence of more infectious variants, means the province is at a critical point.

"For the last few weeks, we have plateaued at 500 new cases. This is too many. We are at a precipice. The virus continues to circulate in our communities. We are at the threshold of where we were in late October and November when cases started escalating," she said.

"Over the next two weeks, I believe we can bend our curve. Not just plateau, but bend it back down."
