That is a phenomenal source, and might explain some of the confused reporting.

The patients have different symptoms, and perhaps different diagnoses. The patient that died of "hypovolemic shock" is listed as having had (suspected? confirmed?) dengue. Several are listed as having had suspected GI infections, perhaps HUS, due to E. coli and such.

Some of them had increased white blood cell counts, some had decreased ones.

And one of them is listed as having been ill with fever for 11 days before admission (and had convulsions, a symptom not reported elsewhere), something not reflected in the media reporting.

Some pictures of chikungunya are similar to those of Maracay

Patients who died presented a general picture of fever, joint pain, rash, which then lead to the general deterioration of the body

Between 2005 and 2006, Reunion Island, located in the French Indian there were 244,000 cases of chikungunya, which ended with 203 deaths. The figure represents 0.1% of patients. The Institute of Tropical Medicine Central University of Venezuela reported on his Twitter account this year, during the epidemic of the disease in America, in Martinique were 55 deaths, with 61,860 cases reported and 49 in Guadalupe with 77,240 cases. In 140 characters spanning the tweet, the institute asks: "Are we living in Venezuela something similar?".

For the former health minister Rafael Orihuela, the answer to the question is yes. Notes that the cases have occurred in areas of the country where they are going as many cases of dengue and chikungunya Miranda (Valles del Tuy), Aragua, Carabobo, Vargas, Distrito Capital-so does not rule out that the deaths could respond to an atypical version of the African fever. "Some of those who died in Reunion had any pre-condition, others not. The problem is you do not have how to map cases because there are no specific figures for chikungunya. What is clear is that the number of fever increased from 60,000 in July to 90,000 in August. Chikungunya virus entered with great force and are now in the expansion phase of the epidemic. "

Since the first case of chikungunya was reported in June, it's been 16 weeks. Since then the Ministry of Health has confirmed diagnoses general reports so far have not filed distribution. The latest tally gave him on 29 August when 243 cases were reported. In the Bulletin of the Pan American Health Organization of the second week of September 303 indigenous cases referred in the country and 77 imported.

The specialist said that 85% of cases of dengue and chikungunya are presented with few symptoms, 15% with many symptoms and 0.1% or less of those suffering from these diseases die. Although health officials reported that the state of Aragua in the region have only presented 54 cases of the disease.

Do not rule out anything. Samples were taken and the medical community is waiting for the results. Edgar Capriles, first director of Corposalud that were in Aragua State, said that in the cases of patients who have had a hemorrhagic fever that ended in his death, a list of possibilities is handled and until we have some results will be impossible to rule out anything. Capriles said that samples were taken from the viscera and bodily fluids whose results could be in 10 days. "Health authorities are obliged to say what is" Capriles said.

Orihuela stressed the priority rule meningococcemia: "It's very contagious and transmissible from human to human, also warrants immediate treatment of anyone who has come into contact with the patient and other control measures."

Patients who died presented a general picture of fever, joint pain, rash or rash, which then leads to the general deterioration of patients with inflammation of the whole body, leukocytosis, bleeding, phlyctenules (skin lesions) and respiratory failure, cardiovascular, liver and kidney.

For background information, Venezuela is averaging about 2,000 cases per week each of malaria and dengue:

http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?p=546641#post546641

and has confirmed a few hundred cases of chikungunya:

but many more are suspected (and if 5 members of one football team have it...)

The above post indicates an increase above normal in fever patients of about 30,000 in the past month.

What is known about the "mysterious disease" that baffles doctors in Venezuela
Daniel Pardo

BBC News, Caracas

Last Updated: Monday, September 15, 2014

The governor of Aragua says fake pictures of the disease on social networks seek to "distress the Venezuelans."

Information disclosed on Thursday that eight people died within 72 hours for a "mysterious disease" in the Central Hospital of Maracay (HCM), in the center of the country, triggered a wave of interpretations that have Venezuelans arguing since .

On Sunday, two more people died in similar circumstances to those above, as reported by their families and doctors; one in the same hospital in the capital of Aragua state and the other in the Luis Razetti Clinic Caracas.

The government has not decided on the latter two deaths, but about earlier denied the existence of "a mysterious disease" and described the information as a "media campaign against Venezuela."

The governor of Aragua state, Tarek to Aissami and Communications Minister Delcy Rodriguez versions refer to as a "defamatory" strategy to "distress to the population."

"The case has become increasingly complex," he tells the BBC Julio Castro, professor of medicine at the Central University of Venezuela and one of the leading infectious disease in the country.

"But not medically complex, but politically, which prevents neutral interpretation of what is happening," he says.

The chronology of the Central hechosHospital Maracay
Nine deaths have been reported so far by the same symptoms in the Central Hospital of Maracay.

On Thursday, the president of the College of Physicians of Aragua, Angel Sarmiento, reported the death of eight people in the HCM.

"It's a virus that does not know and has similar symptoms in all cases: fever, joint pains, skin spots and bleeding," he told the BBC on 11 September.

Sarmiento said that the similarity in symptoms and speed of their deaths was all I could report: "Companies must make appropriate tests and wait before you panic."

Next, the government Aragua Health Corporation said they had actually been two deaths instead of eight.

It confirmed that the evidence Hospital were sent to National Institute of Hygiene and Consalud in Caracas, under the government.

Then the government related leaders like Rodriguez and El Aissami rated the information as an "echo of lies intended to distress the population."

They reported that social networking users were sharing photos to generate false panic.

And they asked the Prosecutor to open an investigation to Dr. Sarmiento.

Officials confirmed the figure of eight dead, although they occurred as common cause: peritonitis, enterocolitis, pneumonia, cancer and diabetes, among others.

angel Sarmiento
Angel Sarmiento, president of the College of Physicians of Aragua, was the one who reported the first details. Now being investigated by the prosecution.

Since then, added to the deaths on Sunday, social networks and the attained Venezuelan media discussion does not stop.

What is it? Speaking to the local press on Monday, the health secretary Aragua, Luis Lopez, said the weekend deaths not due to any unknown virus.

"How will we admit that something is going on that does not happen. No emergency Ebola collective deaths, a bacterium that produces death, there is no case with meningococcemia (...) If something was happening we would be the first alert," said Lopez interview on Radio Union.

Dr. Julio Castro, who has been in contact with doctors from HCM, reiterates that "there is some common pattern of clinical presentation: hemorrhagic fever, joint pains and heart failure."

Although the medical records of the first eight dead Maracay are protected by the hospital management, which is public, Castro stated that "patients have gone from mild to moderate disease and severe die in five days."

"And you have the clinical suspicion that there is chikungunya," an African virus transmitted by the bite of a mosquito that has been booming in the Caribbean in recent months.

Gauteng is one of the states affected by vector-borne diseases, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the Ministry of Health.

The World Health Organization says that in countries like Venezuela where the virus has reached 90% of people with fever, joint pain and rashes suffering from chikungunya.

Chikungunya and health crisis in Maracay Central Venezuela Hospital
The state of Aragua, where the Central Hospital of Maracay, the capital is, has had high incidence of vector-borne diseases.

The health sector in Venezuela is currently experiencing one of its worst crisis in years: the shortage of medicines and medical supplies has made institutions as the Venezuelan Association of Hospitals and Clinics and the Medical Federation asked the government to declare a health emergency.

The government, although he admitted the lack of medicines and the difficulties experienced by hospitals, says the hospital emergency declaration would be "disproportionate".

Castro, however, believes that "this issue of Maracay, that we will begin to see other parts of the country, has a bearing on the situation of the country."

"This may not be a rare virus, but an expression of management that has been given to health in Venezuela," said Castro, referring to what he considers a non-transparent management of the information about the disease.

And gives the example of Colombia, also tropical country where the Ministry of Health found 3,000 cases of chikungunya and estimate reach 80 thousand.

Since the first case was detected in Venezuela, official agencies have counted 243 cases of the disease, which last year came to the Americas.

"In Colombia there is an evasion of the facts," says Castro. "But here trying to hide something indisputable, which is the vector arrived in the country as all countries of the Caribbean and the tropics."

Infectologists asked to investigate and report what happened in the state of Aragua.

DANIEL GONZALEZ CAPPA | EL UNIVERSAL

Some of the patients who came to the Maracay Central Hospital (HCM) had similar symptoms: skin lesions, fever, respiratory failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, requiring intensive care and died within days.

The origin of the condition and the exact number of deaths from infectious disease which describe as a "hemorrhagic fever disease that has reportedly killed some Venezuelans" are still unknown. Last week, the president of the Medical Association of Aragua state, Angel Sarmiento, reported that the death toll in the HCM was eight; that's not counting the two reported cases, one in the same hospital and another in the Razetti Clinic, with similar symptoms as described by the family.

A document prepared by the Venezuelan Society of Public Health and Epidemiology National Red Defend explains the causes hemorrhagic fever are diverse, and when presented in the form of outbreaks should be investigated a possible viral origin, such as severe dengue, atypical chikungunya fever, yellow fever or Ebola. Also noteworthy Guanarito hemorrhagic fever, a condition that occurs in patients who live in rural areas and crops that come in contact with feces of some species of mice.

Should be investigated further nonviral infectious causes of hemorrhagic fever, as meningococcemia, staphylococcemia, malaria and leptospirosis, among others.

According to the network, it is known unofficially that in one case the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis was isolated, which can cause similar to that observed in patients who died disease, although at first it was ruled by Corposalud Aragua (like Ebola).

"If there were an outbreak of Neisseria meningitidis, we hope you have taken into account the recommendations in these cases, prophylactic antibiotics in health care workers and family members who had close contact with patients, and use of vaccines in places where and cases have occurred in health care workers who have not received the meningococcal vaccine in the previous two years, "said the statement.

Ana Carvajal, infectious disease physician at the University Hospital of Caracas, explains that some outbreaks of meningitis can occur in patients of different ages.

It also indicates that poisoning by chemicals such as rat poison, can cause bleeding.

"You have to consider all possible causes. All patients with hemorrhagic disease should be evaluated," emphasizes the specialist.

But the worst judgment of Carvajal is that "no one knows what happens in Ottawa. (...) Do not know the diagnosis. Ministry of Health should investigate and report what is happening in Maracay."

Explain that potential patients should take them blood and fluid samples and send them to the National Institute of Health (NIH), the only center in the country that is able to analyze certain infectious diseases.

If INH is not able to analyze the samples, may refer them to the Center for Disease Control of the United States or ask the Pan American Health Organization a 'perfectly trained "team to deal with such cases, Carvajal said.

The Universal tried to communicate with INH, but no spokesman was available to testify.

Looks like this case's entire family was ill with dengue and chikungunya, supporting the possibility that these are the most severe cases of several more common illnesses.

Maracay.- photos, medical reports and autopsy data gathered representatives of the College of Physicians in Aragua, where it says that in the last days have passed ten people, nine of them in the state, the hemorrhagic fever syndrome.

"Three to five days are enough for testing and they still have not said anything. This is an emergency, we know not what we face and we must know the cause in order to provide appropriate treatment to prevent the collapse of the patient's organs. also for epidemiological fence. this is a very aggressive disease and causes deterioration of the patient within 72 hours to cause death, "said a doctor who attended the meeting called Tuesday night at the headquarters of the College of Physicians in Aragua and preferred to keep his identity under guard.

The health professionals in meeting, insisted that government authorities must declare a health emergency in the state.
