Of course, each patient should be tested for each illness separately. There is no guarantee that they all have the same illness. But there are several fatalities here that may be difficult to explain as routine illnesses:

Franklin Fossi, 41 years old, was married and had 4 children, one newborn. Died yesterday at the Central Hospital of Maracay, in Aragua. Yuly Fossi not yet out of perplexity by the speed with which events occurred: he said that last Tuesday his brother began to feel fever and body aches. He was taken to the institution with the suspicion that he had a disease that has become common in Arague?o territory chikungunya.

"We were there until 2:00 in the morning, was five hours. He was discharged and Wednesday seemed to be improving. On Thursday worsened, and it was when I moved back to HCM and isolated, "he said in a telephone interview with The National. Since then, he remained in the recovery room, where I could only enter authorized personnel. "They spent the nurses and doctors with masks, all covered with boots and gloves."

Yuly Fossi said that in hospital mild rash that had aggravated his brother was into large purple sores.

Wilmer Fossi, also brother of the deceased, said the deterioration occurred very quickly, "It was a matter of days. We learned that bounced when coughing and had blood stains. "

The patient's mother was one of the few family members could visit. "When my mom saw this and was intubated. After he entered the hospital he had infection in the lung. And he did not come with problems cough "explained Sister.

The hospital asked the family Fossi help to get drugs. On Saturday night the website of the radio online Radiofonik published a notice of public service: "To hospitalized in the emergency area of HCM (Franklin Fossi) patient is in the area of resuscitation is needed urgently Paracetamol Infalgam or intravenous. "The medicine was donated by a person who had in his house.

They also had to support the HCM with laboratory tests and medical supplies. "The reviews were almost all out of the hospital, there is no reagents. They put a tube and had to find the urine collectors. "

Accurate diagnosis of the condition of Franklin Fossi has not yet arrived. Among the tests performed is a blood culture that you are still waiting. "On Saturday, a doctor who came to see my brother all he told me was that first and then asking God to let him into the hands of doctors until we knew what was wrong. But we were never told. Never got a diagnosis of what was my brother, "lamented Yuly Fossi.

The death certificate lists the cause of death was "acute respiratory distress type 1", an explanation that does not satisfy everyone.

Studies

Wilmer Fossi expects the National Institute of Hygiene Rafael Rangel give them the results of the studies. "Anyway we in the funeral home where we will ensure, to take samples sent for tests by us and to really know what he had."

Yuly Fossi also wants reasons for death are clarified: "My brother was fine and it was contaminated in the hospital. We need this to get because Governor Tarek el Aissami said nothing happens. We do not know what is happening. "

Studies

The Medical College of Aragua and the Venezuelan Society of Public Health's request Fossi relatives were shared so that the authorities release the results of medical tests that help to clarify the picture. Angel Sarmiento, president of the regional medical association, on Thursday reported the deaths of eight patients in the hospital for a febrile haemorrhagic syndrome of unknown cause. The governor denied the allegations and attributed to a terrorist campaign, which called for a criminal investigation.

"Our task is to pressure the hygiene institute to give the results, because since last week have samples," Feder said Alvarez, secretary of the College of Physicians of Aragua. To date, the Health Ministry has not issued official position on the case of Maracay.

Alvarez said that a blood culture may take 8 days to be analyzed, but at 72 hours it is possible to cut growth that yields a preliminary result. Similarly, he indicated that viral tests can take between 5 and 7 days, and serology for dengue 48 to 72 hours. "To start today should be working."

Ana Carvajal, epidemiologist, urged the Ministry of Health to ensure that adequate protection measures are taken until one knows how to cope with the disease and asked the office to give information about the cases.

Zozobra deaths in Venezuela by hemorrhagic fever syndrome

September 15, 2014 - 9:58 a.m.

Venezuelans are now more distress. In recent times it has been informed by social networks at least 6 deaths as a result of what is called "hemorrhagic fever".

According to infectious disease and medical history, this febrile syndrome can span multiple etiologies ... From a dengue, chikungunya, leptospirosis until the dreaded Ebola. The trouble is that Maduro's government since stringing the media for anything, does not report these deaths, not applied health policy and health commensurate with the gravity of the situation which according to experts, could get out of hand and spread to other states and even beyond the borders.

As this disease arrived in the country, where the families of the dead, where are the bodies and autopsies are to make a definitive diagnosis? No one knows.

Venezuelans information-hungry start sending messages through social networks recommending not to leave their homes if it is not needed and avoid sending children to schools until it is known, for certain, what is happening with this disease in the center of the country.

Specialists, infectious disease specialists, doctors have attached the code of conduct about what they observe in the health centers. Maduro administration in response are threatened, persecuted and treated as they try to imprison the Doctor Angel Sarmiento, President of the Medical Association of Aragua, who was one of the first to publicize the syndrome patients presenting Central Hospital Maracay.

A Venezuelan doctors have to help the Venezuelan State is obliged to provide the necessary inputs for the diagnosis of the disease. Hiding the truth does not help. It gets worse. Venezuelans once again must raise our voices in protest. It is not the only gangland murders in the corners. An irresponsible government wants to end the life of citizens. Health is a right enshrined in the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

One alternative diagnosis, raised in an unrelated ProMED post today, that seems to match most of the symptoms and would be far more likely to be found in Venezuela than plague is Vibrio vulnificus infection, which is transmitted through contact with contamined water or seafood (and does not spread person-to-person).

From today's ProMED post:

_Vibrio vulnificus_, a lactose-fermenting, halophilic, Gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen, is found in estuarine environments and associated with various marine species such as plankton, shellfish (oysters, clams, and crabs), and finfish. Environmental factors responsible for controlling numbers of _V. vulnificus_ in seafood and in the environment include temperature, pH, salinity, and amounts of dissolved organics.

Wound infections result either from contaminating an open wound with sea water harboring the organism, or by lacerating part of the body on coral, fish, etc., followed by contamination with the organism. The ingestion of _V. vulnificus_ by healthy individuals can result in gastroenteritis. The "primary septicemia" form of the disease follows consumption of raw seafood containing the organism by individuals with underlying chronic disease, particularly liver disease. The organism can also enter through damaged skin. In these individuals, the microorganism enters the blood stream, resulting in septic shock, rapidly followed by death in many cases (about 50 percent). Over 70 percent of infected individuals have distinctive bulbous skin lesions (shown at http://safeoysters.org/images/sym_2_photo.jpg).

----------

I am a bit disappointed that we haven't received any further results, even excluded diagnoses, in the past few days. To me, it seems this alert is driven more by the fear of the highly unusual symptoms than by the number of deaths. - alert

Atypical haemorrhagic fever claims lives in Venezuela.

According to surveyed infectious disease physicians of great reputation "you can not make a diagnosis on the recent deaths in the country because there is no existence of reagents for it."

What is known so far is that this atypical hemorrhagic fever kills within 72 hours. Now, as you may -contin?an- doctors who have attended the deceased have not yet been infected? Will not transmitted from person to person? We do not know yet.

Contest epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists is necessary to study this disease, slow its expansion and apply specific drugs for cure.

Treating physicians, families, nursing staff and all those who have been close to the deceased should be placed under observation.

Even the CICPC and SEBIN that have appeared in hospitals where these deaths have occurred to require that cremated and bury the bodies immediately, should keep quarantine until the origin of this disease is known and incubation time .

Re: Venezuela - Nine dead in Maracay Central Hospital by unidentified illness - Aragua state

Here's the Twitter feed of this doctor (who thinks the patient had chikungunya, something that seems unlikely):

https://twitter.com/raforih

This doctor believes the patients are undergoing something like:

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM194501042320101#.VBNm21WKUU8.twitter , a link he tweeted.

I have reason to question the authenticity of some of his pictures as well. Some of them look a lot more like the fake EVD images in:

http://virologydownunder.blogspot.com/2014/08/fake-ebola-virus-disease-images.html

than the previous descriptions in this thread.

If they broaden the case definition to include every infectious fatality in the state, they are going to have difficulty finding the source of the problem.

There are also serious discrepancies as to the time frame of this outbreak. Some sources put it in the past few days, others put it in the past few weeks, and that picture of the baby is July 22, almost two months ago.
