Infectious bird flu virus found in snow goose from Canyon Ferry
Independent Record 17 hrs ago

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was found in a snow goose from Canyon Ferry and a Canada goose from near Belgrade last week, Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials said.

The virus was detected earlier this month in domestic poultry in Judith Basin and Cascade counties. Several more birds from around the state are now undergoing testing for the virus, FWP officials said Monday.

This marks the first time since 2015 the virus has been detected in Montana, when it was found in a gyrfalcon and then in a backyard poultry flock in Judith Basin County.

Jennifer Ramsey, wildlife veterinarian with FWP, said the snow goose was sick when it was found at Canyon Ferry by a member the public who took it to the rehabilitation center at Montana Wild in Helena. It was then euthanized and tested. She said she suspects other birds at Canyon Ferry are sick as well.

"I would not be surprised if some tested positive," she said...

ALBANY, N.Y. (WWTI) — Bird flu is on the rise in New York. On April 20, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) confirmed that the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus, or Bird Flu, has been found in multiple wild bird species across New York.

DEC warned that HPAI outbreaks in wild birds are often cyclical and tied to migration when birds are concentrated in large numbers. HPAI was detected in free-ranging wild birds in Cayuga, Clinton, Montgomery, Monroe, Onondaga, Seneca, Suffolk, Nassau, Livingston, and Wayne counties.

Infected wild birds include snow geese, Canada geese, tundra swan, mute swan, sanderling, mallard duck, redhead duck, ring-necked duck, wood duck, hooded merganser, great blue heron, bald eagles, great horned owls, snowy owl, cooper’s hawk, red-tailed hawk, fish crow, and turkey vulture...

Montana wild turkeys first turkeys to die of avian flu in U.S.
by Jonathan MayFriday, April 29th 2022

BOZEMAN, Mont. — Wild turkeys found dead in Montana are the first turkeys known in the United States to die of the avian flu.

The dead turkeys were found near MSU Billings.

The person who found the first turkey originally thought it had been hit by a car. After noticing another turkey dead in the same area, the next day, he called FWP.

Game wardens then collected three of the dead birds and found they were positive for the highly pathogenic avian flu.

“People need to be aware that it is in their neighborhoods, and that it is in birds, and it does affect all birds. So eventually, songbirds could even get it,” FWP information and education program manager Bob Gibson said...
