Eurasian A5 Avian Influenza Confirmed in Dead Wild Geese in New Hampshire
News Provided By New Hampshire Fish and Game Department
April 06, 2022, 16:40 GMT

Concord, NH –The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is announcing that Eurasian H5, a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), was detected in Canada geese which were recently found dead in Strafford County. Over 70 geese were found over the course of several weeks, a number of which were collected and submitted for testing. The USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed the presence of HPAI, and findings from both the University of New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center indicate HPAI as the likely cause of death. In February, a total of 46 mallards collected through routine surveillance of the wild population tested positive in Rockingham County for this avian influenza, as well as 3 other ducks in Grafton County...

Bird flu detected in wild birds in Wyoming's Park, Bighorn and Fremont counties
Wyoming Game and Fish 38 min ago

Two great horned owls from Park County, one Canadian goose from Bighorn County and two Canadian geese from Fremont County have tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

The presence of the virus in Wyoming was identified by the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory and confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, the agency said. Consequently, Game and Fish is asking the public to report groups of dead birds to the department...

Third Bald Eagle Dead from Bird Flu in Vt., Wildlife Officials Say
The sick eagles may have scavenged infected waterfowl, biologists say
By Jack Thurston • Published 28 mins ago • Updated 28 mins ago

With the virus in Vermont, the state veterinarian wants farmers and backyard chicken raisers here to limit contact between their flocks and wild birds, to quarantine domesticated birds coming in from other farms, and to make sure boots and equipment aren’t contaminated with bird droppings — a common way influenza spreads between animals.

Vermont is the latest state to confirm the presence of a highly-spreadable form of bird flu now sweeping the nation. And the discovery was made in an iconic bird species — the bald eagle.

“It’s terribly distressing,” nature lover Mara Coven of Burlington said after hearing three sick bald eagles have recently died in Vermont from the disease known as highly pathogenic avian influenza. “I’m very unhappy about the eagles.”

Lab tests confirmed those symbols of the United States had HPAI, according to the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Late Friday, state wildlife officials said one eagle was found dead in North Hero and another sick in Shelburne in late March. By Monday, biologists said three bald eagles are now known to have died from the disease.

The third affected bird was located in Franklin County, according to the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife.

“These birds are scavenging on dead waterfowl,” explained David Sausville of the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife. “If the waterfowl have [bird flu] in their system, maybe that’s how they picked it up.”...

Hundreds of birds found dead, likely from avian flu, at Baker’s Lake near Barrington. ‘I’ve never seen anything like this.’ (Illinois)
By Sheryl DeVore
Chicago Tribune |

Avian flu has likely killed hundreds of double-crested cormorants nesting at Baker’s Lake near Barrington.

Wildlife biologist Chris Anchor said this is the largest outbreak of disease in wild birds he’s seen in Cook County.

“I’ve never seen anything like this since I started working here 41 years ago,” said Anchor, of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. “Chances are this is happening in other places, and we’re not aware of it because no one is looking.”...

Avian Influenza Detected in Bald Eagles In Georgia

The viral disease called highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in bald eagles in Georgia and has likely undercut nesting success for eagles in the state’s coastal counties, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The viral disease called highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in bald eagles in Georgia and has likely undercut nesting success for eagles in the state’s coastal counties, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Avian influenza or bird flu can infect wild and domestic birds, as well as other animals. The strain known as highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly referred to as HPAI, is worldwide, highly infectious, untreatable and potentially lethal to infected animals. HPAI has been detected in wild birds in more than 30 states this year, the U.S. Agriculture Department reports. Those cases list 11 wild birds in Georgia, including lesser scaup, gadwall, American wigeon and now bald eagle.

The risk of HPAI being transmitted to people is low. To date, no human infections from the current virus (H5N1) have been documented in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention...
