--Nebraska (NE)--Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b was confirmed on a mixed-species backyard (non-poultry) premises located in Merrick County, NE. Clinical signs included dyspnea and high mortality. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Depopulation and disposal were completed on 17 Mar 2022. New Hampshire (NH)--Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b was confirmed on a mixed-species backyard (non-poultry) premises in Rockingham County, NH. Clinical signs included acute respiratory distress and death. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Depopulation and disposal were completed on 18 Mar 2022. Maine (ME)--Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b was confirmed on four mixed-species backyard (non-poultry) premises in Lincoln, Knox and York Counties, ME. Clinical signs included self-isolation from other birds, decreased feed and water intake, depression and acute mortality. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Depopulation was completed on three of the four affected premises by 19 Mar 2022 and disposal is in progress. Depopulation and disposal on the fourth affected premises is in progress. Iowa (IA)--Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b was confirmed on a mixed-species backyard (non-poultry) premises in Warren County, IA. Clinical signs included cyanotic combs and increased mortality. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Depopulation and disposal are pending. Missouri (MO)--Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b was confirmed on a mixed-species backyard (non-poultry) premises in Ralls County, MO. Clinical signs included ruffled feathers and high mortality. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Depopulation and disposal were completed on 16 Mar 2022. Disinfection is in progress. Kansas (KS)--Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, Eurasian lineage goose/Guangdong clade 2.3.4.4b was confirmed on a mixed-species backyard (non-poultry) premises in Sedgwick County, KS. Increased mortality was observed. State officials have quarantined the affected premises. Depopulation, disposal and cleaning were completed on 17 Mar 2022. Disinfection is in progress. HPAI H5N1 was also confirmed in the following additional wild bird species: Wood duck, Sanderling, American white pelican, Hooded merganser, Herring gull and Brown pelican. Additional confirmed samples were collected from wild birds in Virginia (VA), Georgia (GA), New York (NY), Indiana (IN), Illinois (IL), Missouri (MO), Ohio (OH) and Iowa (IA). The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Animal Health and Wildlife Officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI H5N1 related events in non-poultry species. According to article 10.4.1.4 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Member Country should not impose bans on the international trade of poultry commodities in response to notification of infection with any Influenza A viruses in birds other than poultry.
