Oct 5 (Reuters) - The first patient diagnosed with Ebola in the United States has apparently not received any of the experimental treatments for the disease, a top U.S. health official said on Sunday.

The person is not considered to be one of the 10 people who definitely had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, who is in critical condition at a Dallas hospital. The man is part of a larger group of 38 people who may have been around Duncan when he was showing symptoms of the disease, officials said.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins called the man a "low-risk individual." Authorities had monitored him a day earlier but want to take his temperature regularly to make sure he doesn't have a fever, a possible symptom of Ebola infection.

The group of 10 people is composed of seven health care workers and three family members or community contacts, said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Frieden said doses of the experimental medicine ZMapp were "all gone" and that the drug, produced by San Diego-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical, is "not going to be available anytime soon."

Asked about a second experimental drug, made by Canada's Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp, he said it "can be quite difficult for patients to take."

Frieden said the doctor and the patient's family would decide whether to use the drug, but if "they wanted to, they would have access to it."

"As far as we understand, experimental medicine is not being used," Frieden said. "It?s really up to his treating physicians, himself, his family what treatment to take."

First Imported Case of Ebola Diagnosed in the United States

CDC confirmed on September 30, 2014, through laboratory tests, the first case of Ebola to be diagnosed in the United States in a person who had traveled to Dallas, Texas from West Africa. The patient did not have symptoms when leaving West Africa, but developed symptoms approximately five days after arriving in the United States.

The person sought medical care at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas after developing symptoms consistent with Ebola. Based on the person?s travel history and symptoms, CDC recommended testing for Ebola. The medical facility isolated the patient and sent specimens for testing at CDC and at a Texas lab participating in CDC?s Laboratory Response Network. CDC and the Texas Health Department reported the laboratory test results to the medical center to inform the patient. Local public health officials have begun identifying close contacts of the person for further daily monitoring for 21 days after exposure.

The ill person did not exhibit symptoms of Ebola during the flights from West Africa and CDC does not recommend that people on the same commercial airline flights undergo monitoring, as Ebola is only contagious if the person is experiencing active symptoms. The person reported developing symptoms several days after the return flight.

CDC recognizes that even a single case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States raises concerns. Knowing the possibility exists, medical and public health professionals across the country have been preparing to respond. CDC and public health officials in Texas are taking precautions to identify people who have had close personal contact with the ill person and health care professionals have been reminded to use meticulous infection control at all times.

We know how to stop Ebola?s further spread: thorough case finding, isolation of ill people, contacting people exposed to the ill person, and further isolation of contacts if they develop symptoms. The U.S. public health and medical systems have had prior experience with sporadic cases of diseases such as Ebola. In the past decade, the United States had 5 imported cases of Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) diseases similar to Ebola (1 Marburg, 4 Lassa). None resulted in any transmission in the United States.

The Liberian man hospitalized in Dallas with the Ebola virus remained in critical condition Monday, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, as health officials reported that none of the nearly 50 people who may have been exposed to the virus have shown signs of illness.

The director, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, speaking on NBC?s "Today" show, said that the 10 people who have had direct contact with the Ebola patient, Thomas E. Duncan, and 38 others who may have had contact with him have had their temperatures taken daily and have not developed fever or other warning signs of infection.

The Ebola patient in isolation at a Texas hospital has begun treatment with an experimental drug that was approved by the federal government today for experimental use, the hospital said.

Thomas Eric Duncan, who is being treated at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital after being the first person diagnosed with Ebola within the United States, is listed in critical condition but is believed to be stable.

"He is now receiving an investigational medication, brincidofovir, for Ebola Virus Disease," hospital spokeswoman Candace White said in a tweet.

The announcement that he is now being treated with an experimental anti-viral medication called brincidofovir comes the same day that the Food and Drug Administration approved its use in experimental cases.

Brincidofovir is produced by Chimerix, a Durham, North Carolina-based company and was approved through an Emergency Investigational New Drug Applications program by the FDA.

"Based on in vitro data from work conducted by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health, suggesting brincidofovir's activity against Ebola, we are hopeful that brincidofovir may offer a potential treatment for Ebola Virus Disease during this outbreak," M. Michelle Berrey, the president and CEO of Chimerix said in a statement released today.

Duncan may not be the only person to receive the experimentation medication. The company reports that they are ?working closely with the FDA to finalize a clinical trial protocol,? according to the release.

Quite a turn of events for this drug that was hoped to protect against a double-stranded DNA virus like smallpox since Ebola is a single-stranded RNA virus, but the company website says that nucleoside analogs are suited for RNA viruses that use viral encoded polymerases for their replication.

Lakey spoke about the people who are being monitored because of their contact with Duncan.

"There are 48 individuals that we are watching closely," said Lakey. "All these individuals are being checked for fever twice a day. There are no sightings of fever or illness so far."

He cautioned that this was a "crucial week" for people who have had direct contact with Duncan. Symptoms of Ebola tend to show up eight to 10 days after being in contact with an infected person.

Scanners lower the temperature on health concerns

Five new temperature scanners, which measure a student?s temperature, are being placed in each of Dallas ISD?s ?watch? schools. Those are the campuses where students were identified as having been exposed to the sole U.S. Ebola patient.

And that reading happens in a matter of seconds.

?It doesn?t take very long, it?s not invasive. The kids would find it, I think, fun,? said Rumsey.

Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School nurse Ann Rumsey was one of the first to use one of the devices and says it this will increase confidence among parents who may still have some concerns.

?The kids are very, very healthy here and no one is showing obvious signs of flu-like symptoms here, ? said Rumsey.

Dallas-based Wello, Inc. is donating the fever monitors to the district. The devices, which will be housed in the school nurse?s offices, represent a medical-equipment technology like no other on the market. Retired Centers for Disease Control infectious disease epidemiologist Dr. Murray Cohen now heads Wello?s medical advisory group.

?The children really weren?t at risk for Ebola, but understanding parents? concern, we thought that we could build a machine for the school,? said Cohen.

Once a reading is taken, the system sends three measurements electronically to the school nurse, along with a picture of that student. The photo helps identify a student if the temperature reaches the fever threshold. Should that threshold be reached, an additional alert is captured and sent via email.

Yesenia Ramirez, principal at Lowe, says the new and safe way to take temperatures will also help any stigmas remaining within the community.

?I think once knowing that we are doing scans within our classrooms, the parents will feel much, much better,? said Ramirez.

DALLAS - Two days ago was the last time Thomas Duncan's loved ones were able to speak with him. When they did, he was so sick, the 42-year-old from Liberia could barely talk.

Doctors said he's clinging to life eight days after being admitted to a Dallas hospital for Ebola. They began treating him with an experimental drug on Saturday.

"They don't have a lot of facts on the drug itself. What they are doing to try is do a lot of tests and send lab work back to the hospital," said Josephus Weeks, Duncan's nephew.

In the meantime, Duncan's partner, Louise, and her family remain under quarantine at a home reportedly provided by a member of her church. Those who've had contact with Duncan are constantly being monitored -- public health officials have identified 48 people, including 10 who are considered high risk. They will remain in isolation for the next two weeks.

Doctors said the next three to four days could be the most critical in determining whether they've been infected with Ebola.

"One hundred percent of them had no signs of a fever and no signs of illness. One hundred percent were doing well," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Family members said the situation is dire and they're hoping for a miracle.

"(We're) just worried and praying to God he makes it overnight," Weeks said.
