A patient has been admitted into strict isolation at a North Texas hospital for testing of potential Ebola virus disease.

In a statement released Monday evening, a spokesperson for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas said the patient is undergoing evaluation for Ebola based on the patient's symptoms and recent travel history.

"The hospital is following all Centers for Disease Control and Texas Department of Heath recommendations to ensure the safety of patients, hospital staff, volunteers, physicians and visitors," according to the hospital's statement.
Preliminary test results are expected by the CDC on Tuesday.

A patient in a Dallas hospital is showing signs of the Ebola virus and is being kept in strict isolation with test results pending, hospital officials said Monday.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas said in a statement Monday that the patient's symptoms and recent travel indicated a case of Ebola, the virus that has killed more than 3,000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of Americans who have traveled to that region.

Preliminary test results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are expected to come back Tuesday.

Hospital spokeswoman Candace White would not answer any questions about the patient or where the patient had visited.

The National Institutes of Health recently admitted an American doctor exposed to the virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone. Four other patients have been treated at hospitals in Georgia and Nebraska.

Presbyterian Hospital's statement said officials there were following CDC recommendations to keep doctors, staff and patients safe.

According to the CDC, Ebola symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, vomiting and bleeding, and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure to the virus.

Dallas County health officials: CDC team headed to Dallas

Dallas County health officials on Tuesday told Dallas County commissioners that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is dispatching a team to Dallas in case a patient at a local hospital tests positive for Ebola.
The report was delivered to commissioners after Health and Human Services officials cut short a presentation on the threat of an Ebola outbreak for a conference call with the CDC. Officials said the CDC team would lead the response if test results expected today come back positive for a patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas.

In their presentation prior to the CDC call, health department officials sought to downplay the threat of a local outbreak. Health officials told commissioners that they had already begun an investigation to reach out to people who had been in contact with the patient. Officials said the patient had recently visited West Africa and didn't exhibit symptoms until soon after "arriving home."

Christopher Perkins, medical director for the health department, reminded commissioners that Ebola isn't transmitted through the air -- it is passed through contact with blood or other bodily fluids. Officials also assured residents that the local situation is nowhere near as dire as in West Africa.

"In general, the threat is minimal to the citizens of Dallas County," Perkins said.

The Texas public health lab in Austin is testing a specimen from a Dallas patient for Ebola, and hopes to have results later Tuesday afternoon, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

Carrie Williams, director of media relations, said in an emailed update, “At this point, all precautions are being taken as if this was an Ebola case.”

Erikka Neroes, public information officer for Dallas County, said the county will release the results for the patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, whether they are positive or negative.

She said she could not confirm that a team from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is coming to Dallas, but confirmed that a team is mobilizing. Williams said the CDC also is conducting testing for Ebola.

The patient came to the hospital on his or her own, according to Dallas County Health Director Zachary Thomas. He said in an interview with media partner WFAA that the patient had traveled to Africa.

Dallas-Fort Worth Airport has no direct flights to and from Africa, so if the patient were flying, he or she would have had to make a connection elsewhere.

What does this mean? If the media conference starts at 5:30 pm ET time then there is no embargo on the content.

I have a feeling the mainstream media is about to explode.

The CDC will host a briefing on the country's first Ebola case at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from their headquarters in Atlanta. At 5:30 p.m., a news conference will be held at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.

The first case of the Ebola virus has been diagnosed in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas confirmed Tuesday afternoon the case involves a patient who was undergoing evaluation and tests for Ebola at their hospital.

Good grief - 4 days? Did the individual travel during those days? How did they arrive at the hospital?

Worse yet, they are reporting that he sought treatment initially (where?) on the 26th, and was sent home, only to be admitted to this hospital on the 28th.

Why don't they state if the individual is an american citizen or not?
