Yushchenko: Flu situation to stabilize by Nov. 7
Today at 15:42 | Ukrainian News President Victor Yushchenko hopes the situation with the A(H1N1) flu epidemic and other acute respiratory viral infections in Ukraine will stabilize within five or seven days.

Ukrainian News learned this from a statement by Viktor Yushchenko made public at a meeting concerning the flu epidemic in Lviv.

"I would like to devote this meeting to this [to the flu epidemic], as that we would report in 5-7 days that this wave of flu and the acute respiratory viral infection we face in several western regions of the country so far, that we have achievements in the overcoming this wave in 5-7 days, that the situation is under control," the presidential press service quoted Yushchenko as saying.

He called on people to follow advice of specialists, rather than pieces of advice from politicians speculating on the flu.

Yushchenko said the fight against the epidemic should start with observation of routine rules of hygiene by citizens.

He also called on citizens to take into consideration recommendations from the Health Ministry and restrict their trips in Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, President Yushchenko has called on the Health Ministry to release understood recommendations for the population concerning the A(H1N1) flu epidemics.

The Health Ministry on October 30 declared the A(H1N1) flu epidemic throughout Ukraine.

The Cabinet of Ministers has introduced quarantine in nine regions, banned organization of mass events, and closed educational institutions for three weeks because of the epidemic influenza.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Health Ministry declared an epidemic of the A(H1N1) influenza in Ukraine on Oct. 30.

The Cabinet of Ministers has introduced a quarantine in nine regions, banned organization of mass events, and closed schools for three weeks because of the epidemic influenza.

Re: Ukraine- Pandemic Influenza - Ministry of Health says 185,000 cases & 53 deaths

And a WHO report. This one blames the more severe disease on a delay in treatment (and likely, incorrect treatment as a result of not suspecting flu).

http://www.who.int/csr/don/20091101/en/index.html

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009, Ukraine
On 28 October 2009, the Ministry of Health of the Ukraine informed WHO, through its Country Office in Ukraine, about an unusually high level of activity of acute respiratory illness in the western part of the country, associated with an increased number of hospital admissions and fatalities.

On 30 October 2009, the Ministry of Health of the Ukraine announced the confirmation of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus infection by RT-PCR in eleven out of 30 samples obtained from patients presenting with acute respiratory illness in two of the most affected regions. Tests were performed in two laboratories in Kyiv, including the National Influenza Centre. Confirmatory tests will be performed at one of the WHO Collaborating Centres for Influenza.

The situation is quickly changing with increasingly high levels of acute respiratory illness (ARI)/Influenza-like-illness (ILI) activity being observed in Ternopil, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernivtsi regions. The higher levels of transmission in these regions corresponds to an increased number of hospital admissions and fatalities associated with severe manifestations of acute respiratory illness.

As of 30 October 2009, over 2,300 individuals have been admitted to hospital, including over 1,100 children. One hundred and thirty one (131) cases have required intensive care, including 32 children. As of 31 October 2009, a total of 38 fatalities associated with severe manifestations of ARI have been registered. Preliminary epidemiological data analysis indicates that severe cases and deaths primarily occur among previously healthy young adults aged 20 – 50 years. Fatal and severe cases are reported to have sought medical attention 5 to 7 days after onset of symptoms.

International experience of the (H1N1) 2009 pandemic to date, especially from the Southern Hemisphere, has shown that poor clinical outcomes are associated with delays in seeking health care and limited access to supportive care. In addition, this virus has also shown its ability to cause rapidly progressive overwhelming lung disease which is very difficult to treat.

Public health measures recommended by the Ministry of Health of the Ukraine across the entire country include: social distancing (school closures and cancellation of mass gatherings); enhancement of surveillance activities; increased respiratory hygiene; and continuation of the vaccination campaign against seasonal influenza targeting at risk groups.

The Government of the Ukraine has activated coordination mechanisms to respond to the rapidly evolving situation, including the harmonization of response plans across all administrative levels.

In response to the request from the Minister of Health of the Ukraine, WHO is deploying a multi-disciplinary team of experts to assist national authorities in mitigating the impact of the pandemic. The team comprises of the following expertise: health emergencies coordination, case management, epidemiology, laboratory diagnostics, logistics, and media/risk communications.

As per WHO's communication in May 2009, there is no rationale for travel restrictions because such measures will not prevent the spread of the disease.

Travellers can protect themselves and others by following simple recommendations aimed at preventing the spread of infection such as attention to respiratory hygiene. Individuals who are ill should delay travel plans and returning travellers who fall ill should seek appropriate medical care. These recommendations are prudent measures which can limit the spread of many communicable diseases and not only the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus.

"Invoking a rarely-used law allowing the state to take temporary control of private property, Tymoshenko declared all health-related organizations in the country, including privately-owned health clinics and hospitals, to be "directly subordinate" to the government, effective immediately.

The government would pay particular attention to medical supply retailers, to head off artificial goods shortages and price gouging, she said, in comments reported by the Unian news agency. Retail price spikes of as much as 300 per cent for cold and flu remedies have taken place in recent years in Ukraine, during avian flu outbreaks. Tymoshenko claimed privately-operated chemists in the country were "absolutely supplied in full volume with all necessary medical supplies," contradicting spot reports of shortages."

KIEV, November 1 (Itar-Tass) - The epidemic situation in Ukraine ?has assumed a threatening and unpredictable nature and is a threat to national security?, says a decree of October 31 by President Viktor Yushchenko, published on Sunday. In this connection, the government was instructed to create reserves of medical equipment and anti-virus preparations, to strengthen anti-epidemic regime in places frequented by people, to restrict mass events and to involve the Defence Ministry and the Ministry for Emergencies to render medical aid to population.

The Health Ministry is to inform the Security Council secretary of the situation daily. The Defence Ministry was instructed to organise a check-up of population in the countryside with mobile teams from hospitals.

Incidentally, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine to fight the flu epidemic, reported the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

Fifty-three people, including a child and two pregnant women, have died of cold and flu in Ukraine, the Health Ministry said.

In all, the country?s cold and flu rate amounts to 185,000, including 9,400 cases of flu. The number of A/H1N1 flu cases is unknown.

Ukraine enacted border crossing rules because of the A/H1N1 flu outbreak, Timoshenko said.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has asked the world to help handle the flu epidemic.

Re: Ukraine- Pandemic Influenza - Ministry of Health says 185,000 cases & 53 deaths

This article reveals that the four dead HCW are all doctors. Given that the four doctors are spread over two oblasts (states/provinces), I assume they have checked for links. If two or three of them were in the same hospital, that would suggest and overlapping outbreak of something much more virulent than H1N1. But I see no sign of that yet.

comment:
We now have at least 55 confirmed H1N1 deaths, and 4 doctors dead as well, which leads one to consider that their mention of California may be an allusion to the Tamiflu-resistant variant of H1N1 seen earlier in the year, in a few isolated cases, and the mention of severe hemorrhagic pnemonia ...we've all been seeing such cases in the West as well during the current pandemic, and also there was the fulminant pneumonia seen in the 1918 H1N1 pandemic. Thanks for all the updates of news stories and all the efforts being done to find out just what is occurring in the Ukraine. It may just be a matter of scale, so many patients at once that the hospitals and HCWs were overwhelmed quickly and had to get the national government to provide emergency guidance on this emerging health care crisis. It's good to know they're trying quarantines and closure of schools and trying to get all international assistance that may be available. I hope we'll all help the Ukraine and all countries that are less than well-prepared for the coming winter.

I don't like the sound of this binomius cold and flu.

Another recent thread post reported elsewhere more serious flu as a result of a cold at the same time.

Ordinary, plain, once usual cold, can't have such importance in worsening a flu in an infected person.
But the "new age" changed colds (adenov.xx) could maybe be involved there.

It seems good and welcomed to make barriers to an easy spreading, as it is done now there.

The suspect remains that some thing is diferent there, if it prompts such swift reaction of containment,
at the same time when in all of other infected countries there is no containment actions.

But maybe there they thinks only more to the future safety of the citizens ...
