Swine flu kills man who had never been ill

A KIND-HEARTED son who had never fallen ill keeled over and died of swine flu - just 24 hours after he complained of a sore throat and headache.

Garry Irvine, 49, had just done his neighbour's shopping when he suddenly told his parents he was feeling poorly and went to bed early.

The next day he collapsed as a doctor examined him at the home he shared with Ian, 73, and Mary, 74, in Mayfield, Midlothian.

Garry was rushed to hospital and put on life support but battling medics were unable to save him.

Shattered Mary said: "The doctor was speaking to him and she asked him to sit up. He just collapsed on her.

Swine flu claims former nurse?s life

CHARITY begins at the home this week of a grief-stricken OAP, mourning her disabled daughter?s tragic swine flu death.

Alison Booley ? who ?loved life? ? is believed to have contracted the pandemic virus in hospital.

Her cash-strapped family contacted Selby Times, whose adopted cause Hands of Hope immediately donated ?500 towards crippling funeral costs.

Alison suffered chronic Dystonia ? a neurological disorder causing agonising involuntary muscle spasms, affecting only one victim in 850.

See this week?s Selby Times for full story.

Disabled teenager died of swine flu after being refused GP appointment

A disabled teenager who was refused a GP appointment died two weeks later after contracting swine flu and pneumonia.

Katie Waring's devastated parents, Ken and Eveline, claim she could not get a vital appointment, and say they were told to 'wrap her up warm and give her fluids'.

Less than two weeks later, the 19-year-old, who suffered from the rare brain condition Craniostenosis, died in Hartlepool General Hospital, after being diagnosed with pneumonia and swine flu.

The heartbroken and angry couple from Hartlepool also claim Katie's brain defect wasn't picked up in time by health experts after she was born.

Hospital reveals extent of swine flu outbreaks

A total of 34 inpatients at Kettering General Hospital tested positive for swine flu over the Christmas period, latest figures have revealed.

The hospital’s accident and emergency department was inundated with people experiencing flu-like symptoms over the festive period, which resulted in it declaring ‘red alert’.

The hospital was forced to cancel some of its non-urgent operations because of ‘operational difficulties’ caused by high patient numbers during the Christmas week.

Inseparable in life and death: Couple who were devoted to each other for over half a century died MINUTES apart

Mr Dix, a former steel worker, had been suffering from flu when he collapsed at their home.

His wife called an ambulance and watched distraught as medics prepared to take her husband to hospital. It was to be the last time she saw him as during the short journey he lost his battle for life.

Unaware of his death, Mrs Dix, 76, called their children to tell them of the emergency. But just after delivering the news she collapsed and died.

Grandad in fight for life after catching swine flu in hospital
Feb 3 2011 By Lachlan Mackinnon

A GRANDAD was clinging to life last night after catching swine flu in hospital.

Graham Irwin, 55, was infected with the virus last week as he was being treated in Lanarkshire's Wishaw General Hospital.

The dad-of-two has been in the hospital's high dependency unit for the past few weeks after being admitted with a soaring temperature.

Graham has been heavily sedated and is being kept alive by a ventilator.

A source said: "Graham is dying. His family have been told his liver and kidneys are shutting down due to blood poisoning and swine flu.

"The only place he could have caught swine flu is in that HDU ward..."

A father has died from swine flu after repeatedly being turned away by medical staff, his pregnant wife claimed today.

Tharmjit Singh Josen who had previously been fighting fit, fell ill in December and died just four weeks later in hospital.

Today Tharmjit Singh Josen's widow Kash said he was not prioritised by NHS staff because he was not in an 'at risk' category.

His wife said she battled to get him effective treatment to no avail...

Today's fatality reports from the UK summarize as follows;

England 281 (up 44); Scotland 54 (up 4); Wales 35 (up 1) Northern Ireland 25 (up 2); Total 395 (up 51)

Note: I haven't seen an official Welsh fatality number this week, but with the other 3 regions accounted for there was one extra fatality which I assumed is from Wales.

RoRo,

I'm not sure if this couple was counted or possibly only the husband was counted since he was exhibiting symptoms first. The article doesn't say when they died. It's really sad for their family.

Tragic couple died minutes apart

When grandad Donald Dix, 85, collapsed at home, his wife Rosemary dialled 999 for an ambulance.

Rosemary, 76, then telephoned her daughter Jacqueline to say her father was being rushed into hospital, and feared he was ?on his way out?. Tragically, when Jacqueline arrived at hospital she learned her father had already died ? but her mother was not there.

In a further devastating blow, Jacqueline rushed to her parents? house in Heath, Cardiff, to find her mother collapsed dead by the phone.

Based on the genetic characterization of 165 influenza viruses,
  • 90 belonged to the pandemic A/California/7/2009 A(H1N1) clade;
  • 4 belonged to the pandemic A/Christchurch/16/2010 A(H1) clade;
  • 23 belonged to the pandemic A/Hong Kong/2213/2010 A(H1) clade;
  • 16 were reported as A(H1) pandemic not attributed to group category but belonging to the recently emerged A/England/142/2010 subgroup characterized by S185T substitution in the HA;
  • 5 belonged to the A(H3) clade represented by A/Perth/16/2009;

Since the genetic characterization algorithms were put in place for pandemic influenza A(H1N1) viruses at the start of the 2010/2011 influenza season, a new genetic subgroup has been observed to emerge that is geographically dispersed and increasing in prevalence.

This genetic subgroup is characterized by an S185T substitution in HA and is represented by A/England/142/2010.

To date, viruses carrying the S185T substitution remain antigenically similar to the current vaccine virus A/California/7/2009.

At present, 98% of antigenically characterized viruses from the 2010/2011 influenza season are similar to the viruses included in the 2010/2011 northern hemisphere influenza vaccines.

Four more people die from swine flu in NI

The latest deaths bring to 21 the number of people who have died from H1N1 flu during the current flu season.

That figure does not include the two-year-old child from the Republic who died while being cared for in an intensive care unit in NI.

Health authorities, however, believe the "flu season" in Northern Ireland is past its peak.

Of the four victims who lived locally, one was a 10-month-old baby, the others were adults.

Of the 21 people who have died from the H1N1 virus, 18 had underlying medical conditions, one case is still unclear and the other two people were otherwise healthy.

Since last week, one further person has died from the Influenza B virus which is a different strain of flu
