UK - Swine flu: hospitals 'gridlocked'

The NHS is in "gridlock", with hospitals across the country being forced to declare that they have reached the highest level of emergency because of flu and other winter viruses.

He said desperately sick people had been left for hours waiting on trolleys, with even those requiring intensive care enduring long delays.

Dozens of NHS units have cancelled surgery and clinics for outpatients. At least 10 major centres issued "black alerts" - the

highest emergency warning - meaning they were at breaking point, forcing patients to be sent elsewhere.

Hospitals in Cambridge and Norfolk were on "black alert" for more than two weeks. In the past 10 days, major hospitals in London, Liverpool, Surrey, Southampton, Peterborough, Derby, King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth issued the same warning.

While many hospitals did not schedule non-emergency surgery during the Christmas and New Year period, in the past week dozens cancelled thousands of planned operations.

Routine surgery was stopped at hospitals in Leicester, Sheffield, Macclesfield, Middlesbrough, Northallerton, Durham, Darlington, Bassetlaw, Belfast, Portsmouth, south Wales and many parts of London.

Ten die with swine flu in Yorkshire

A quarter of national swine flu deaths have happened in East Yorkshire, with ten people with the condition having died there.

Half were men and half women, the BBC reports, and nine out of ten had underlying health conditions. Only one did not have another condition, and died primarily from swine flu.

So far this winter 50 flu deaths have occurred; 45 were due to swine flu or H1N1. Since December 1st there have been 84 confirmed cases of swine flu in hospitals, while more than 200 people have been admitted to hospitals with suspected swine flu. The surge in cases has forced hospitals to cancel some major operations to make bed space.

Commentators have called the current flu outbreak ?Britain?s worst in years? and there have been suggestions that an epidemic could develop. Some local medical authorities have run low on this years? seasonal flu vaccine. The NHS has told any hospitals or GP surgeries that run low on vaccines to use the 2009 H1N1 vaccines.

Swine flu mum needs a miracle

THE parents of swine flu mum Leanne Gunnell were praying for a miracle yesterday after doctors told them to expect the worst.

Leanne, 21, suffered brain damage from the bug days after giving birth to Faith on November 30. The receptionist was put in an induced coma seven weeks ago to protect her then unborn child but still has not come round.

Parents Sharon, 43, and Simon, 44, of Gloucester, may now have to decide whether to turn off her life support. Sharon said "We can't give up on her now."

BRITAIN?S top medical adviser yesterday said cost-cutting played no part in the decision not to *vaccinate all children against flu.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies spoke following a call from the parents of a young swine flu victim for routine jabs for the under-fives.

Three-year-old Lana Ameen died from the virus on Boxing Day. Her parents Zana and Gemma, who had been staying with family in Stockport, want to see a vaccination programme to protect the youngest children.

Christmas Day Telford mother dies in hospital
Monday 17th January 2011, 11:29AM GMT.
A 37-YEAR-OLD Shropshire woman who lost a newborn baby just two years ago has died weeks after giving birth to a healthy son on Christmas Day.

Sharon Teresa Morris is believed to have contracted pneumonia and died in the intensive care unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on January 9.

A COMMUNITY leader today said the threat of swine flu must be recognised following the death of a North-east man.

Stonehaven councillor Mike Sullivan said the death of 42-year-old Gerald Matthew as a result of the deadly H1N1 virus was ?one death too many?.

It was understood Stonehaven man Gerald Matthew, a digger operator, lost his fight against the swine flu virus when he also developed pneumonia.

I sorted through all the posts and linked articles late into the evening - whew! I think I have a pretty accurate database. I found some duplications and new cases and was able to add a lot more information to the fatalities I only had partial data for. After reviewing the posts from today, I have a total of 115 fatalities from England, 28 each from Scotland and Wales, and 19 from NI, for a total of 190.

If anyone is interested in the spreadsheet, especially if you can find additional details, send me a PM and I can email you a copy.

GPs still short of flu vaccines

Many GPs and surgeries are running low on stocks or have run out, as reported in last week?s Standard.

Hundreds of people in the area are suffering from flu-like symptoms and respiratory problems amid the shortage of vaccines.

The Hart Surgery in York Road, Henley, has run out of seasonal flu vaccines but still has some to treat swine flu.

Office manager Rosemary Passmore said: ?We had about five to 10 seasonal vaccines but another surgery had a massive waiting list so I said it must have them.


?If we get a significant number of people waiting we will see if can get some more in but there?s no guarantee. If there are enough people who really need it and are in the ?at-risk? group, I will start trawling around the country to find some.?

Ms Passmore added: ?There are definitely more people coming in with flu this year than last year.?

The Bell Surgery in York Road, Henley, had to turn patients away after it ran out of vaccines but has now replenished its stock.

It has 200 vaccinations of three types ? for swine flu, for 18- to 59-year-olds and for people over 60. Office manager Josie Campbell said: ?We?ve managed to get more from suppliers, other surgeries and government supplies.

?We?re running flu clinics again and ringing people who we had to put off. We have enough to keep us going while we order more.? Ms Campbell said the large number of flu patients seen before Christmas had started to fall this week.

?We?re still getting lots of children in with respiratory problems though,? she added.

The Nettlebed Surgery expects to have more vaccines available within days but Lloyds Pharmacy in Cavendish Road, Emmer Green, and the pharmacy at the Tesco store in Henley have none.

A handful of patients with swine flu are being treated at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

Last week, the number of people with flu-like symptoms occupying critical care beds in the region was 35 and a hospital spokesman said it had experienced a ?busy week?. A spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service said the increase in flu patients was putting the service under pressure and urged people to try to get vaccinated.

Arrowe Park Hospital doctor dies from swine flu (Merseyside/Liverpool area

A DOCTOR who worked at Arrowe Park hospital has died from swine flu.

The man, who was in his early 30s, passed away at Southport Hospital last week.

A spokeswoman for Arrowe Park said the trust could not comment.

Health chiefs today urged all medical professionals to get vaccinated.

All routine surgical operations due to take place at Macclesfield Hospital this week have been postponed following a second swine flu death.

The move to make way for seriously-ill patients follows the death of Garth Bielby, 58, from Wilmslow, who died in intensive care at the hospital last week.

Comment: I found this article from the 12th identifying one of the fatalities that was not previously mentioned.

A seriously ill Irish swine flu patient has been flown to hospital in Denmark for specialist treatment for respiratory failure.

The treatment is available at the Mater Hospital in Dublin but the facilities there are limited, so the HSE has sent a number of Irish swine flu patients abroad to be treated.
It is believed that a swine flu patient, who was in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital, was transferred to Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark last Friday.
He was transferred there by a medical team from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, which also provides the highly-complex treatment.
The Karolinska Institute is also understood to be treating another patient from the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Tributes paid to courageous swine flu victim who died aged 26

The 26-year-old sufferer of Retts syndrome had never been well enough to be vaccinated against the H1-N1 virus at her local GP surgery.

Hers is believed to be the first death in North East Lincolnshire from the virus, which has claimed around 120 lives nationally.

A TWENTY-one-year-old Kidderminster woman who died suddenly after complaining of flu-like symptoms had pneumonia, a coroner has ruled.

Lisa Wimbush, of Trimpley Close, began to feel ill on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 but went to work as usual at the British Heart Foundation charity shop in Kidderminster. She took painkillers including Calpol but the following day she felt worse and called in sick.

Influenza activity appears to be declining in the UK. GP consultation rates remain above baseline levels in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Influenza A H1N1 (2009) and B are the predominant circulating viruses with few, sporadic A (H3N2) viruses detected. The H1N1 (2009) virus strain is virologically and epidemiologically similar to that seen during the pandemic. The virus strains circulating are overall well matched to the current influenza vaccine.

* In week 2 (ending 16 January), the weekly influenza/influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rates decreased in England (66.5 per 100,000), Scotland (42.9 per 100,000), Wales (51.5 per 100,000) and Northern Ireland (194.0 per 100,000).
* The weekly national proportions of NHS Direct calls for cold/flu have decreased, although a slight increase in calls for fever in children has been observed.
* Seven acute respiratory disease outbreaks were reported in the UK in week 2, two in care homes, one in a hospital, one in a prison and three in schools. This brings the total reported this season so far to 153.
* Seventy-nine of 278 (28.4%) specimens from patients with ILI presenting to sentinel GPs in England in week 2, were reported as positive for influenza. The proportion of specimens reported to DataMart (England) as positive for influenza decreased to 19.7% (584 of 2,961). The proportion of samples positive for RSV was stable and was low for rhinovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus and HMPV.
* Currently the main circulating influenza strains are influenza A (H1N1) and influenza B.
* Since week 36, 254 UK deaths associated with influenza infection have been reported. Excess all-cause mortality continues to be observed in week 1.
* By week 2, the proportion of people in England aged over 65 years who had received the 2010/11 influenza vaccine was 71.7%. For those in a risk group aged under 65 years it was 48.0%. Amongst frontline health-care workers the provisional uptake was 26.1% by 31 December 2010.
* In Europe, most countries are continuing to report increasing influenza activity, primarily associated with influenza A H1N1 (2009). In the USA influenza activity has decreased slightly but continued to increase in Canada. In North America influenza A (H3N2) and B viruses have been predominant.
